Advancements in Flexible Nanogenerators: Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Based Nanofiber Utilizing Electrospinning

With the gradual miniaturization of electronic devices and the increasing interest in wearable devices, flexible microelectronics is being actively studied. Owing to the limitations of existing battery systems corresponding to miniaturization, there is a need for flexible alternative power sources. Accordingly, energy harvesting from surrounding environmental systems using fluorinated polymers with piezoelectric properties has received significant attention. Among them, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and PVDF co-polymers have been researched as representative organo-piezoelectric materials because of their excellent piezoelectric properties, mechanical flexibility, thermal stability, and light weight. Electrospinning is an effective method for fabricating nanofibrous meshes with superior surface-to-volume ratios from polymer solutions. During electrospinning, the polymer solution is subjected to mechanical stretching and in situ poling, corresponding to an external strong electric field. Consequently, the fraction of the piezoelectric β-phase in PVDF can be improved by the electrospinning process, and enhanced harvesting output can be realized. An overview of electrospun piezoelectric fibrous meshes composed of PVDF or PVDF co-polymers to be utilized is presented, and the recent progress in enhancement methods for harvesting output, such as fiber alignment, doping with various nanofillers, and coaxial fibers, is discussed. Additionally, other applications of these meshes as sensors are reviewed.

Two-Dimensional High-Entropy Selenides for Boosting Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Performance

High-entropy materials (HEMs) have garnered extensive attention owing to their diverse and captivating physicochemical properties. Yet, fine-tuning morphological properties of HEMs remains a formidable challenge, constraining their potential applications. To address this, we present a rapid, low-energy consumption diethylenetriamine (DETA)-assisted microwave hydrothermal method for synthesizing a series of two-dimensional high-entropy selenides (HESes). Subsequently, the obtained HESes are harnessed for photocatalytic water splitting. Noteworthy is the optimized HESes, Cd0.9Zn1.2Mn0.4Cu1.8Cr1.2Se4.5, showcasing an output rate of hydrogen of 16.08 mmol h-1 g-1 and a quantum efficiency of ca. 30% under 420 nm monochromatic LED irradiation. It is revealed that the photocatalytic performance of these HESes stems not only from the enlarged specific surface area and enhanced photogenerated charge carrier utilization efficiency but also from the promoted formation of the Cd-Hads bond, influenced by multiple principal elements on the Cd. These findings provide a guide for the design of HEMs tailored for various applications.

Hollow carbon-based materials for electrocatalytic and thermocatalytic CO2 conversion

Electrocatalytic and thermocatalytic CO2 conversions provide promising routes to realize global carbon neutrality, and the development of corresponding advanced catalysts is important but challenging. Hollow-structured carbon (HSC) materials with striking features, including unique cavity structure, good permeability, large surface area, and readily functionalizable surface, are flexible platforms for designing high-performance catalysts. In this review, the topics range from the accurate design of HSC materials to specific electrocatalytic and thermocatalytic CO2 conversion applications, aiming to address the drawbacks of conventional catalysts, such as sluggish reaction kinetics, inadequate selectivity, and poor stability. Firstly, the synthetic methods of HSC, including the hard template route, soft template approach, and self-template strategy are summarized, with an evaluation of their characteristics and applicability. Subsequently, the functionalization strategies (nonmetal doping, metal single-atom anchoring, and metal nanoparticle modification) for HSC are comprehensively discussed. Lastly, the recent achievements of intriguing HSC-based materials in electrocatalytic and thermocatalytic CO2 conversion applications are presented, with a particular focus on revealing the relationship between catalyst structure and activity. We anticipate that the review can provide some ideas for designing highly active and durable catalytic systems for CO2 valorization and beyond.
