Transformation Optics: A Time- and Frequency-Domain Analysis of Electron-Energy Loss Spectroscopy

Designing plasmonic exceptional points by transformation optics

Exceptional points (EPs) have been shown to be useful in bringing about sensitive optical properties based on non-Hermitian physics. For example, they have been applied in plasmonics to realize nano-sensing with extreme sensitivity. While the exceptional points are conventionally constructed by considering parity-time symmetric or anti-parity-time symmetric media, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of generating a series of non-Hermitian systems by transforming a seed system with conventional parity-time symmetry within the transformation optics framework. The transformed systems do not possess PT-symmetry with a conventional parity operator after a spatial operation, i.e. hidden from conventional sense, but are equipped with exceptional points and phase transitions, hinting an alternative method to design non-Hermitian plasmonic systems with sensitive spectra or eigenmodes.

Understanding quantum emitters in plasmonic nanocavities with conformal transformation: Purcell enhancement and forces

Nanogaps supporting cavity plasmonic modes with unprecedented small mode volume are attractive platforms for tailoring the properties of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale and revealing new physics. Hitherto, there is a concerning lack of analytical solutions to divide the complex interactions into their different underlying mechanisms to gain a better understanding that can foster enhanced designs. Bowtie apertures are viewed as an effective and appealing nanocavity and are studied here within the analytical frame of conformal transformation. We show how the non-radiative Purcell enhancement of a quantum emitter within the bowtie nanocavity depends strongly not only on the geometry of the nanocavity, but also on the position and orientation of the emitter. For a 20 nm diameter (∅ 20 nm) bowtie nanocavity, we report a change of up to two orders of magnitude in the maximum non-radiative Purcell enhancement and a shift in its peak wavelength from green to infra-red. The changes are tracked down to the overlap between the emitter field and the gap plasmon mode field distribution. This analysis also enables us to understand the self-induced trapping potential of a colloidal quantum dot inside the nanocavity. Since transformations can be cascaded, the technique introduced in this work can also be applied to a wide range of nanocavities found in the literature.

Enhancing Efficiency of Electromagnetic Simulation in Time Domain with Transformation Optics

With sub-wavelength scaled structures in a large system, the conventional finite-difference time-domain method can consume much computational resources since it includes both the spatial and temporal dimension in the scheme. In order to reduce the computational cost, we combine the novel methodology “transformation optics” in the simulation to map a physical coordinate with designated non-uniform grids to a uniform numerical coordinate. For a demonstration, the transmission spectrum through a sub-wavelength metallic aperture with one-dimensional and two-dimensional coordinate transformation is simulated, and compared with uniform-grid cases. We show that the proposed method is accurate, and the computational cost can be reduced remarkably to at most 5.31%, in comparison with the simulation of the finest uniform grids demonstrated. We are confident that it should be helpful to the simulation study in sub-wavelength optics due to its verified accuracy and efficiency.

Self-Focusing and the Talbot Effect in Conformal Transformation Optics

Transformation optics has been used to propose various novel optical devices. With the help of metamaterials, several intriguing designs, such as invisibility cloaks, have been implemented. However, as the basic units should be much smaller than the working wavelengths to achieve the effective material parameters, and the sizes of devices should be much larger than the wavelengths of illumination to work within the light-ray approximation, it is a big challenge to implement an experimental system that works simultaneously for both geometric optics and wave optics. In this Letter, by using a gradient-index microstructured optical waveguide, we realize a device of conformal transformation optics (CTO) and demonstrate its self-focusing property for geometry optics and the Talbot effect for wave optics. In addition, the Talbot effect in such a system has a potential application to transfer digital information without diffraction. Our findings demonstrate the photon controlling ability of CTO in a feasible experiment system.
