Long-Range Self-Assembly via the Mutual Lorentz Force of Plasmon Radiation

All-Atom Simulation Method for Zeeman Alignment and Dipolar Assembly of Magnetic Nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) can organize into novel structures in solutions with excellent order and unique geometries. However, studies of the self-assembly of smaller MNPs are challenging due to a complicated interplay between external magnetic fields and van der Waals, electrostatic, dipolar, steric, and hydrodynamic interactions. Here, we present a novel all-atom molecular dynamics simulation method to enable detailed studies of the dynamics, self-assembly, structure, and properties of MNPs as a function of core sizes and shapes, ligand chemistry, solvent properties, and external field. We demonstrate the use and effectiveness of the model by simulating the self-assembly of oleic acid ligand-functionalized magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles, with spherical and cubic shapes, into rings, lines, chains, and clusters under a uniform external magnetic field. We found that the long-range electrostatic interactions can favor the formation of a chain over a ring, the ligands promote MNP cluster growth, and the solvent can reduce the rotational diffusion of the MNPs. The algorithm has been parallelized to take advantage of multiple processors of a modern computer and can be used as a plugin for the popular simulation software LAMMPS to study the behavior of small MNPs and gain insights into the physics and chemistry of different magnetic assembly processes with atomistic details.

Phase Transition and Self-Stabilization of Light-Mediated Metal Nanoparticle Assemblies

Light-mediated self-organization of nanoparticles (NPs) offers a route to study mesoscale electrodynamics interactions in many-body systems. Here we report the phase transition and self-stabilization of dynamic assemblies with up to 101 plasmonic metal NPs in optical fields. The spatial stability of self-organized NPs is strongly influenced by the laser intensity and polarization state, where phase transition occurs when the intensity increases and the polarization changes from linear to circular. Well-organized NP arrays can form in a circularly polarized laser beam, where the center of an array is less susceptible to thermal fluctuations than the edge. Moreover, larger arrays are self-protected from fluctuation-induced instability by incorporating more NP constituents. The dynamics of NP arrays can be understood by electrodynamic simulations coupled with thermal fluctuations and by examining their potential energy surfaces. This study clearly reveals the spatial inhomogeneity of optical binding interactions in a two-dimensional multiparticle system, which is important for building large-scale optical matter assemblies with NPs.

Large-scale optothermal assembly of colloids mediated by a gold microplate

Light-activated colloidal assembly and swarming can act as model systems to explore non-equilibrium state of matter. In this context, creating new experimental platforms to facilitate and control two-dimensional assembly of colloidal crystals are of contemporary interest. In this paper, we present an experimental study of assembly of colloidal silica microparticles in the vicinity of a single-crystalline gold microplate evanescently excited by a 532 nm laser beam. The gold microplate acts as a source of heat and establishes a thermal gradient in the system. The created optothermal potential assembles colloids to form a two-dimensional poly-crystal, and we quantify the coordination number and hexagonal packing order of the assembly in such a driven system. Our experimental investigation shows that for a given particle size, the variation in assembly can be tuned as a function of excitation-polarization and surface to volume ratio of the gold microplates. Furthermore, we observe that the assembly is dependent on size of the particle and its material composition. Specifically, silica colloids assemble but polystyrene colloids do not, indicating an intricate behaviour of the forces under play. Our work highlights a promising direction in utilizing metallic microstructures that can be harnessed for optothermal colloidal crystal assembly and swarming studies. Our experimental system can be utilized to explore optically driven matter and photophoretic interactions in soft-matter including biological systems such as cells and micro organisms.

Dissipative Self-Assembly of Anisotropic Nanoparticle Chains with Combined Electrodynamic and Electrostatic Interactions

Dissipative self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles offers the prospect of creating reconfigurable artificial materials and systems, yet the phenomenon only occurs far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Therefore, it is usually difficult to predict and control. Here, a dissipative colloidal solution system, where anisotropic chains with different interparticle separations in two perpendicular directions transiently arise among largely disordered silver nanoparticles illuminated by a laser beam, is reported. The optical field creates a nonequilibrium dissipative state, where a disorder-to-order transition occurs driven by anisotropic electrodynamic interactions coupled with electrostatic interactions. Investigation of the temporal dynamics and spatial arrangements of the nanoparticle system shows that the optical binding strength and entropy of the system are two crucial parameters for the formation of the anisotropic chains and responsible for adaptive behaviors, such as self-replication of dimer units. Formation of anisotropic nanoparticle chains is also observed among colloidal nanoparticles made from other metal (e.g., Au), polymer (e.g., polystyrene), ceramic (e.g., CeO₂ ), and hybrid materials (e.g., SiO₂ @Au core-shell), suggesting that light-driven self-organization will provide a wide range of opportunities to discover new dissipative structures under thermal fluctuations and build novel anisotropic materials with nanoscale order.
