Phonon Coupling between a Nanomechanical Resonator and a Quantum Fluid

Gigahertz optoacoustic vibration in Sub-5 nm tip-supported nano-optomechanical metasurface

The gigahertz acoustic vibration of nano-optomechanical systems plays an indispensable role in all-optical manipulation of light, quantum control of mechanical modes, on-chip data processing, and optomechanical sensing. However, the high optical, thermal, and mechanical energy losses severely limit the development of nano-optomechanical metasurfaces. Here, we demonstrated a high-quality 5 GHz optoacoustic vibration and ultrafast optomechanical all-optical manipulation in a sub-5 nm tip-supported nano-optomechanical metasurface (TSNOMS). The physical rationale is that the design of the semi-suspended metasurface supported by nanotips of <5 nm enhances the optical energy input into the metasurface and closes the mechanical and thermal output loss channels, result in dramatically improvement of the optomechanical conversion efficiency and oscillation quality of the metasurface. The design strategy of a multichannel-loss-mitigating semi-suspended metasurface can be generalized to performance improvements of on-chip processed nano-optomechanical systems. Applications include all-optical operation of nanomechanical systems, reconfigurable nanophotonic devices, optomechanical sensing, and nonlinear and self-adaptive photonic functionalities.

Geometric Tuning of Stress in Predisplaced Silicon Nitride Resonators

We introduce a novel method to geometrically tune the tension in prestrained resonators by making Si₃N₄ strings with a designed predisplacement. This enables us, for example, to study their dissipation mechanisms, which are strongly dependent on the stress. After release of the resonators from the substrate, their static displacement is extracted using scanning electron microscopy. The results match finite-element simulations, which allows a quantitative determination of the resulting stress. The in- and out-of-plane eigenmodes are sensed using on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and the resonance frequencies and quality factors are extracted. The geometrically controlled stress enables tuning not only of the frequencies but also of the damping rate. We develop a model that quantitatively captures the stress dependence of the dissipation in the same SiN film. We show that the predisplacement shape provides additional flexibility, including control over the frequency ratio and the quality factor for a targeted frequency.

Nanoscale real-time detection of quantum vortices at millikelvin temperatures

Since we still lack a theory of classical turbulence, attention has focused on the conceptually simpler turbulence in quantum fluids. Reaching a better understanding of the quantum case may provide additional insight into the classical counterpart. That said, we have hitherto lacked detectors capable of the real-time, non-invasive probing of the wide range of length scales involved in quantum turbulence. Here we demonstrate the real-time detection of quantum vortices by a nanoscale resonant beam in superfluid ⁴He at 10 mK. Essentially, we trap a single vortex along the length of a nanobeam and observe the transitions as a vortex is either trapped or released, detected through the shift in the beam resonant frequency. By exciting a tuning fork, we control the ambient vortex density and follow its influence on the vortex capture and release rates demonstrating that these devices are capable of probing turbulence on the micron scale.

Previous work has shown the detection of quantum turbulence with mechanical resonators but with limited spatial and temporal resolution. Here, the authors demonstrate real-time detection of single quantum vortices in superfluid ⁴He with millisecond and micron resolution at temperatures of 10 millikelvin.
