Synthetic Optimization and Scale-Up of Imino–Amido Hafnium and Zirconium Olefin Polymerization Catalysts

Amine-Imine Nickel Catalysts with Pendant O-Donor Groups for Ethylene (Co)Polymerization

The introduction of a secondary interaction is an efficient strategy to modulate transition-metal-catalyzed ethylene (co)polymerization. In this contribution, O-donor groups were suspended on amine-imine ligands to synthesize a series of nickel complexes. By adjusting the interaction between the nickel metal center and the O-donor group on the ligands, these nickel complexes exhibited high activities for ethylene polymerization (up to 3.48 × 10⁶ g_PE·mol_Ni^-1·h^-1) with high molecular weight up to 5.59 × 10⁵ g·mol^-1 and produced good polyethylene elastomers (strain recovery (SR) = 69-81%). In addition, these nickel complexes can catalyze the copolymerization of ethylene with vinyl acetic acid, 6-chloro-1-hexene, 10-undecylenic, 10-undecenoic acid, and 10-undecylenic alcohol to prepare the functionalized polyolefins.

Techniques in the synthesis of organometallic compounds of Hafnium

Hafnium is a transition metal and it is the 45th most abundant transition element present on the earth. Hafnium has been successfully alloyed with several metals including titanium, iron, and niobium. Hafnium complexes are less active olefin polymerization catalysts. In the current review synthesis of hafnium complexes involving bonding through different linkages like “carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon and oxygen, nitrogen and cobalt nitrogen and oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur, phosphorus and carbon, phosphorus and oxygen, sulfur carbon and oxygen, carbon–nitrogen and oxygen, carbon–nitrogen and phosphorus, carbon–nitrogen oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus, carbon–oxygen phosphorus and nitrogen”. The commonly used solvents for the synthesis of Hafnium complexes are tetrahydrofuran, n-hexane, and toluene, etc. These complexes were mostly reported at different temperatures ranges from −35 to 110 °C with continuous stirring, according to the nature of ligands. An overview of techniques in the synthesis of Hafnium complexes through various routes has been compiled.

Synthesis of Ethylene/1-Octene Copolymers with Ultrahigh Molecular Weights by Zr and Hf Complexes Bearing Bidentate NN Ligands with the Camphyl Linker

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a class of high-performance engineering plastics, exhibiting a unique set of properties and applications. Although many advances have been achieved in recent years, the synthesis of UHMWPE is still a great challenge. In this contribution, a series of zirconium and hafnium complexes, [2,6-(R1)2-4-R2-C6H2-N-C(camphyl)=C(camphyl)-N-2,6-(R1)2-4-R2-C6H2]MMe2(THF) (1-Zr: R1 = Me, R2 = H, M = Zr; 2-Zr: R1 = Me, R2 = Me, M = Zr; 1-Hf: R1 = Me, R2 = H, M = Hf; 2-Hf: R1 = Me, R2 = Me, M = Hf), bearing bidentate NN ligands with the bulky camphyl backbone were synthesized by the stoichiometric reactions of α-diimine ligands with MMe4 (M = Hf or Zr). All Zr and Hf metal complexes were analyzed using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular structures of complexes 1-Zr and 1-Hf were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing that the original α-diimine ligand was selectively reduced into the ene-diamido form and generated an 1,3-diaza-2-metallocyclopentene ring in the metal complexes. Zr complexes 1-Zr and 2-Zr showed moderate activity (up to 388 kg(PE)·mol−1(M)·h−1), poor copolymerization ability, but unprecedented molecular weight capability toward ethylene/1-octene copolymerization. Therefore, copolymers with ultrahigh molecular weights (>600 or 337 × 104 g∙mol−1) were successfully synthesized by 1-Zr or 2-Zr, respectively, with the borate cocatalyst [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4]. Surprisingly, Hf complexes 1-Hf and 2-Hf showed negligible activity under otherwise identical conditions, revealing the great influence of metal centers on catalytic performances.

Preparation of Pyridylamido Hafnium Complexes for Coordinative Chain Transfer Polymerization

The pyridylamido hafnium complex (I) discovered at Dow is a flagship catalyst among postmetallocenes, which are used in the polyolefin industry for PO-chain growth from a chain transfer agent, dialkylzinc. In the present work, with the aim to block a possible deactivation process in prototype compound I, the corresponding derivatives were prepared. A series of pyridylamido Hf complexes were prepared by replacing the 2,6-diisopropylphenylamido part in I with various 2,6-R2C6H3N-moieties (R = cycloheptyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, 3-pentyl, ethyl, or Ph) or by replacing 2-iPrC6H4C(H)- in I with the simple PhC(H)-moiety. The isopropyl substituent in the 2-iPrC6H4C(H)-moiety influences not only the geometry of the structures (revealed by X-ray crystallography), but also catalytic performance. In the complexes bearing the 2-iPrC6H4C(H)-moiety, the chelation framework forms a plane; however, this framework is distorted in the complexes containing the PhC(H)-moiety. The ability to incorporate α-olefin decreased upon replacing 2-iPrC6H4C(H)-with the PhC(H)-moiety. The complexes carrying the 2,6-di(cycloheptyl)phenylamido or 2,6-di(cyclohexyl)phenylamido moiety (replacing the 2,6-diisopropylphenylamido part in I) showed somewhat higher activity with greater longevity than did prototype catalyst I.

Preparation of Half- and Post-Metallocene Hafnium Complexes with Tetrahydroquinoline and Tetrahydrophenanthroline Frameworks for Olefin Polymerization

Hafnium complexes have drawn attention for their application as post-metallocene catalysts with unique performance in olefin polymerization. In this work, a series of half-metallocene HfMe₂ complexes, bearing a tetrahydroquinoline framework, as well as a series of [N^amido,N,C^aryl]HfMe₂-type post-metallocene complexes, bearing a tetrahydrophenanthroline framework, were prepared; the structures of the prepared Hf complexes were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. When the prepared complexes were reacted with anhydrous [(C₁₈H₃₇)₂N(H)Me]⁺[B(C₆F₅)₄]⁻, desired ion-pair complexes, in which (C₁₈H₃₇)₂NMe coordinated to the Hf center, were cleanly afforded. The activated complexes generated from the half-metallocene complexes were inactive for the copolymerization of ethylene/propylene, while those generated from post-metallocene complexes were active. Complex bearing bulky isopropyl substituents (12) exhibited the highest activity. However, the activity was approximately half that of the prototype pyridylamido-Hf Dow catalyst. The comonomer incorporation capability was also inferior to that of the pyridylamido-Hf Dow catalyst. However, 12 performed well in the coordinative chain transfer polymerization performed in the presence of (octyl)₂Zn, converting all the fed (octyl)₂Zn to (polyolefinyl)₂Zn with controlled lengths of the polyolefinyl chain.

Preparation of Pincer Hafnium Complexes for Olefin Polymerization

Pincer-type [Cnaphthyl, Npyridine, Namido]HfMe2 complex is a flagship among the post-metallocene catalysts. In this work, various pincer-type Hf-complexes were prepared for olefin polymerization. Pincer-type [Namido, Npyridine, Namido]HfMe2 complexes were prepared by reacting in situ generated HfMe4 with the corresponding ligand precursors, and the structure of a complex bearing 2,6-Et2C6H3Namido moieties was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. When the ligand precursors of [(CH3)R2Si-C5H3N-C(H)PhN(H)Ar (R = Me or Ph, Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) were treated with in situ generated HfMe4, pincer-type [Csilylmethyl, Npyridine, Namido]HfMe2 complexes were afforded by formation of Hf-CH2Si bond. Pincer-type [Cnaphthyl, Sthiophene, Namido]HfMe2 complex, where the pyridine moiety in the flagship catalyst was replaced with a thiophene unit, was not generated when the corresponding ligand precursor was treated with HfMe4. Instead, the [Sthiophene, Namido]HfMe3-type complex was obtained with no formation of the Hf-Cnaphthyl bond. A series of pincer-type [Cnaphthyl, Npyridine, Nalkylamido]HfMe2 complexes was prepared where the arylamido moiety in the flagship catalyst was replaced with alkylamido moieties (alkyl = iPr, cyclohexyl, tBu, adamantyl). Structures of the complexes bearing isopropylamido and adamantylamido moieties were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Most of the complexes cleanly generated the desired ion-pair complexes when treated with an equivalent amount of [(C18H37)2N(H)Me]+[B(C6F5)4]-, which showed negligible activity in olefin polymerization. Some complexes bearing bulky substituents showed moderate activities, even though the desired ion-pair complexes were not cleanly afforded.

The reaction of Cp*(Cl)Hf(2,3-dimethylbutadiene) with isonitriles is theoretically investigated, and detailed elementary reactions and the substitution effects are examined.

Development of group IV molecular catalysts for high temperature ethylene-α-olefin copolymerization reactions

This Account describes our research related to the development of molecular catalysts for solution phase olefin polymerization. Specifically, a series of constrained geometry and nonmetallocene (imino-amido-type) complexes were developed for high temperature olefin polymerization reactions. We have discovered many highly active catalysts that are capable of operating at temperatures above 120 °C and producing copolymers with a useful range of molecular weights (from medium to ultrahigh depending on precatalyst identity and polymerization conditions) and α-olefin incorporation capability. Constrained geometry catalysts (CGCs) exhibit very high activities and are capable of producing a variety of copolymers including ethylene-propylene and ethylene-1-octene copolymers at high reactor temperatures. Importantly, CGCs have much higher reactivity toward α-olefins than classical Ziegler-Natta catalysts, thus allowing for the production of copolymers with any desired level of comonomer. In search of catalysts with improved performance, we discovered 3-amino-substituted indenyl-based CGCs that exhibit the highest activity and produce copolymers with the highest molecular weight within this family of catalysts. Phenanthrenyl-based CGCs were found to be outstanding catalysts for the effective production of high styrene content ethylene-styrene copolymers under industrially relevant conditions. In contrast to CGC ligands, imino-amido-type ligands are bidentate and monoionic, leading to the use of trialkyl group IV precatalysts. The thermal instability of imino-amido complexes was addressed by the development of imino-enamido and amidoquinoline complexes, which are not only thermally very robust, but also produce copolymers with higher molecular weights, and exhibit improved α-olefin incorporation. Imido-amido and imino-enamido catalysts undergo facile chain transfer reactions with metal alkyls, as evidenced by a sharp decrease in polymer molecular weight when the polymerization reactions were conducted in the presence of diethylzinc, an essential requirement for use in the production of olefin block copolymers via chain shuttling polymerization. Overall, the excellent characteristics of imino-amido-type catalysts, including high catalytic activities and ultrahigh molecular weight capabilities, make them good candidates for high temperature syntheses of block and random ethylene-α-olefin copolymers. Additionally, trialkyl imino-enamido complexes react quickly with various protic and unsaturated organic fragments, leading to a library of dialkyl precatalysts that, in several instances, resulted in superior catalysts. In conjunction with the development of transition metal catalysts, we also synthesized and evaluated activators for olefin polymerization. We found, for example, that, when conducted in coordinating solvents, the reaction between aluminum alkyls and tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane leads to the exclusive formation of alumenium borates, which are excellent activators for CGC complexes. Additionally, we developed a series of highly effective new activators featuring a very weakly coordinating anion composed of two Lewis acids coordinated to an imidazole fragment.
