Abstract
The construction of silicon-stereogenic silanols via Pd-catalyzed intermolecular C-H alkenylation with the assistance of a commercially available L-pyroglutamic acid has been realized for the first time. Employing oxime ether as the directing group, silicon-stereogenic silanol derivatives could be readily prepared with excellent enantioselectivities, featuring a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Moreover, parallel kinetic resolution with unsymmetric substrates further highlighted the generality of this protocol. Mechanistic studies indicate that L-pyroglutamic acid could stabilize the Pd catalyst and provide excellent chiral induction. Preliminary computational studies unveil the origin of the enantioselectivity in the C-H bond activation step.

Abstract
Oligo- and polysiloxanes are usually prepared by condensation reactions in solvents without control of stereochemistry. Here we present a solventless thermal condensation of stable organosilanols. We investigated the condensation reactions of organosilanediols with different organic substituents, having in common at least one aromatic group. The condensation kinetics of the precursors observed by NMR spectroscopy revealed a strong dependence on temperature, time, and substitution pattern at the silicon atom. SEC measurements showed that chain length increases with increasing condensation temperature and time and lower steric demand of the substituents, which also influences the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the resulting oligo- or polymers. X-ray diffraction studies of the crystalline silanediols and their condensation products revealed a structural correlation between the substituent location in the crystalline precursors and the formed macromolecules induced by the hydrogen bonding pattern. In certain cases, it is possible to carry out topotactic polymerization in the solid-state, which has its origin in the crystal structure.

Abstract
Nitroaromatic compounds represent one of the essential classes of molecules that are widely used as feedstock for the synthesis of intermediates, the preparation of nitro-derived pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials on both laboratory and industrial scales. We herein disclose the efficient, mild, and catalytic ipso-nitration of organotrimethylsilanes, enabled by an electrophilic N-nitrosaccharin reagent and allows chemoselective nitration under mild reaction conditions, while exhibiting remarkable substrate generality and functional group compatibility. Additionally, the reaction conditions proved to be orthogonal to other common functionalities, allowing programming of molecular complexity via successive transformations or late-stage nitration. Detailed mechanistic investigation by experimental and computational approaches strongly supported a classical electrophilic aromatic substitution (SE Ar) mechanism, which was found to proceed through a highly ordered transition state.

Abstract
Herein, we report the first rhodium-catalyzed hydrolytic cleavage of the silicon-carbon bond in silacyclobutanes using water as the reactant. A series of silacyclobutanes could be employed in this reaction in the presence of the Rh/BINAP complex, resulting in the corresponding silanols in good yields. Additionally, a chiral 1,1,4,4-tetraaryl-2,3-O-isopropylidene-l-threitol-derived phosphoramidite ligand could be used in this reaction to yield Si-stereogenic silanol with promising enantioselectivity.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized and evaluated silanol-based bisphenol derivatives as stable isosteres of bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methanol. The developed silanols exhibited estrogen receptor (ER)-modulating activity. Among them, bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)(methyl)silanol (5a) showed a characteristic ER subtype selectivity, namely, antagonistic activity toward ERα and agonistic activity toward ERβ. Docking simulation indicated that the silanol moiety plays a key role in this selectivity. Our results suggest that silanol-based bisphenols offer a unique scaffold for biologically active compounds.

Abstract
Methods to efficiently synthesize organosilanes are valuable in the fields of synthetic chemistry and materials science. During the past decades, boron conversion has become a generic and powerful approach for constructing carbon-carbon and other carbon-heteroatom bonds, but its potential application in forming carbon-silicon remains unexplored. Herein, we describe an alkoxide base-promoted deborylative silylation of benzylic organoboronates, geminal bis(boronates) or alkyltriboronates, allowing for straightforward access to synthetically valuable organosilanes. This selective deborylative methodology exhibits operational simplicity, broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility and convenient scalability, providing an effective and complementary platform for the generation of diversified benzyl silanes and silylboronates. Detailed experimental results and calculated studies revealed an unusual mechanistic feature of this C-Si bond formation.

Abstract
The development of earth-abundant catalysts for the selective conversion of silanes to silanols with water as an oxidant generating valuable hydrogen as the only by-product continues to be a challenge. Here, we demonstrate that [MnBr(CO)5] is a highly active precatalyst for this reaction, operating under neutral conditions and avoiding the undesired formation of siloxanes. As a result, a broad substrate scope, including primary and secondary silanes, could be converted to the desired products. The turnover performances of the catalyst were also examined, yielding a maximum TOF of 4088 h-1. New light was shed on the debated mechanism of the interaction between [MnBr(CO)5] and Si-H bonds based on the reaction kinetics (including KIEs of PhMe2SiD and D2O) and spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, GC-TCD, 1H-, 29Si-, and 13C-NMR). The initial activation of [MnBr(CO)5] was found to result from the formation of a manganese(i) hydride species and R3SiBr, and the experimental data are most consistent with a catalytic cycle comprising a cationic tricarbonyl Mn(i) unit as the active framework.

Abstract
General conditions for the Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling of tetrasubstituted vinyl silanes and aryl halides are reported. Prior reports of Hiyama-Denmark reactions of tetrasubstituted vinyl silanes have required the use of vinyl silanols or silanolates, which are challenging to handle, or internally activated vinyl silanes, which lack structural generality. Now, unactivated tetrasubstituted vinyl silanes, bearing bench-stable tetraorganosilicon centers, and aryl halides can be coupled. The key to this discovery is the identification of dimethyl(5-methylfuryl)vinylsilanes as bench stable and easily prepared cross-coupling partners that are readily activated under mild conditions in Hiyama-Denmark couplings. These palladium-catalyzed cross-couplings proceed well with aryl chlorides, though aryl bromides and iodides are also tolerated, and the reactions display high stereospecificity in the formation of tetrasubstituted alkenes. In addition, only a mild base (KOSiMe3) and common solvents (THF/DMA) are required, and importantly toxic additives (such as 18-crown-6) are not needed. We also show that these conditions are equally applicable to Hiyama-Denamrk coupling of trisubstituted vinyl silanes.

Abstract
Silyl radicals are valuable species to prepare diverse organosilicon compounds. However, unlike stable tertiary silyl radicals, the use of secondary silyl radicals has been problematic in silylation reactions due to their instability. Here, we present photocatalytic in situ generations of both secondary and tertiary silyl radicals by one-electron oxidation of ate complexes, formed from silylboranes and an alkoxide cocatalyst, achieving highly efficient hydrosilylation and deuterosilylation of electron-rich alkenes and dienes as well as electron-deficient alkenes. The theoretical studies show that anionic borate complexes activated with an alkoxide have lower oxidation potentials than neutral borate complexes, allowing the formation of secondary silyl radicals. The calculated reaction pathways reveal that anionic conditions using the conjugate acid-base pair of NaOEt (cocatalyst) and EtOH (solvent) are the key to expanding the scope of silyl radicals and alkenes.

Abstract
Herein, we disclosed the contra‐thermodynamic E→Z isomerization of alkenyl silanes, according to the in situ formation of a chromophoric species, in the presence of rac‐BINAP as the catalyst. The reaction carried out in DMSO or CH3CN under irradiation at 405 nm allowed the interconversion of the E‐isomers into the Z‐congeners in good to excellent yields and outstanding Z/E selectivities, on 18 examples. Finally, the mechanism of this E→Z isomerization was studied to get insight into the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
ConspectusArising from the restricted rotation of a single bond caused by steric or electronic effects, atropisomerism is one of the few fundamental categories for molecules to manifest their three-dimensional characters into which axially chiral biaryl compounds fall. Despite the widespread occurrence of axially chiral skeletons in natural products, bioactive molecules, and chiral ligands/organocatalysts, catalytic asymmetric methods for the synthesis of these structures still lag behind demand. Major challenges for the preparation of these chiral biaryls include accessing highly sterically hindered variants while controlling the stereoselectivity. A couple of useful strategies have emerged for the direct asymmetric synthesis of these molecules in the last two decades.Recently, we have engaged in catalytic asymmetric synthesis of biaryl atropisomers via transition metal catalysis, including asymmetric ring-openings of dibenzo cyclic compounds. During these studies, we serendipitously discovered that the two substituents adjacent to the axis cause these dibenzo cyclic molecules to be distorted to minimize steric repulsion. The distorted compounds display higher reactivity in the ring-opening reactions than the non-distorted molecules. In other words, torsional strain can promote a ring-opening reaction. On the basis of this concept, we have successfully realized the catalytic asymmetric ring-opening reaction of cyclic diaryliodoniums, dibenzo silanes, and 9H-fluoren-9-ols, which delivered several differently substituted ortho tetra-substituted biaryl atropisomers in high enantioselectivity. The torsional strain not only activates the substrates toward ring-opening under mild conditions but also changes the chemoselectivity of bond-breaking events. In the palladium-catalyzed carboxylation of S-aryl dibenzothiophenium, the torsional strain inversed the bond selectivity from exocyclic C-S bond cleavage to the ring-opening reaction. In this Account, we summarize our studies on copper-, rhodium-, or palladium-catalyzed asymmetric ring-opening reactions of dibenzo cyclic compounds as a useful collection of methods for the straightforward preparation of ortho tetra-substituted biaryl atropisomers with high enantiopurity on the basis of the above-mentioned torsional strain-promoted ring-opening coupling strategy. In the last part, the torsional strain energies are also discussed with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
Optically active organosilanes have been demonstrated to be versatile chiral reagents in synthetic chemistry since the early seminal contributions by Sommer and Corriu. Among these silicon-containing chiral architectures, monohydrosilanes, which bear a Si-H bond, hold a unique position because of their facile transformations through stereospecific Si-carbon or Si-heteroatom bond-formation reactions. In addition, those compounds have also been leveraged as chiral reagents for alcohol resolution, chiral auxiliaries, mechanistic probes, as well as potential optoelectronic materials. This Minireview comprehensively summarizes the synthesis and synthetic applications of silicon-stereogenic monohydrosilanes, particularly the advances in the transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis of this class of functional molecules.

Abstract
Organosilanols typically show a high condensation tendency and only exist as stable isolable molecules under very specific steric and electronic conditions at the silicon atom. In the present work, various novel representatives of this class of compounds were synthesized by hydrolysis of alkoxy‐ or chlorosilanes. Phenyl, 1‐naphthyl, and 9‐phenanthrenyl substituents at the silicon atom were applied to systematically study the influence of the aromatic substituents on the structure and reactivity of the compounds. Chemical shifts in 29Si NMR spectroscopy in solution, correlated well with the expected electronic situation induced by the substitution pattern on the Si atom. 1H NMR studies allowed the detection of strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Single‐crystal X‐ray structures of the alkoxides and the chlorosilanes are dominated by π‐π interactions of the aromatic systems, which are substituted by strong hydrogen bonding interactions representing various structural motifs in the respective silanol structures.

Abstract
Silicon-based cross-coupling has been recognized as one of the most reliable alternatives for constructing carbon–carbon bonds. However, the employment of such reaction as an efficient ring expansion strategy for silacycle synthesis is comparatively little known. Herein, we develop the first intermolecular silacyclization strategy involving Pd-catalyzed silicon-based C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling. This method allows the modular assembly of a vast array of structurally novel and interesting sila-benzo[b]oxepines with good functional group tolerance. The key to success for this reaction is that silicon atoms have a stronger affinity for oxygen nucleophiles than carbon nucleophiles, and silacyclobutanes (SCBs) have inherent ring-strain-release Lewis acidity. Herein, we develop the first silacyclization between 2-halophenols and SCBs, which allows the modular assembly of sila-benzo[b]oxepines with good functional group tolerance and can be applied for the late-stage modification of biologically active molecules.![]()

Abstract
A variety of γ-keto-β-silyl esters and amides, most with extremely high enantioselectivities, were efficiently prepared via a carbene-catalyzed formal [4 + 2] annulation followed by ring opening with nucleophiles. The resulting compounds from this one-pot strategy can be easily converted into enantioenriched β,σ-dihydroxyl esters.

Abstract
The first electrochemical hydrolysis of hydrosilanes to silanols under mild and neutral reaction conditions is reported. The practical protocol employs commercially available and cheap NHPI as a hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) mediator and operates at room temperature with high selectivity, leading to various valuable silanols in moderate to good yields. Notably, this electrochemical method exhibits a broad substrate scope and high functional-group compatibility, and it is applicable to late-stage functionalization of complex molecules. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction appears to proceed through a nucleophilic substitution reaction of an electrogenerated silyl cation with H2 O.

Abstract
We describe herein a regioselective palladium(II)-catalyzed intermolecular hydroarylation of unactivated aliphatic alkenes with electronically and sterically diverse (hetero)arylsilanes under redox-neutral conditions. A removable bidentate 8-aminoquinoline auxiliary was readily employed to dictate the regioselectivity, prevent β-hydride elimination, and facilitate protodepalladation. This silicon-based protocol features a broad substrate scope with excellent functional group compatibility and enables an expeditious route to a variety of γ-aryl butyric acid derivatives in good yields with exclusive anti-Markovnikov selectivity.

Abstract
Bifunctional unsaturated reagents designed to undergo palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with complementary polyenyl connective fragments are highly useful for the undoubtedly challenging synthesis of polyenes. The current toolkit of building blocks for the bidirectional formation of Csp2 -Csp2 single bonds of polyenes includes homo-bisfunctionalized reagents with equal or unequal reactivity (due to steric and/or electronic factors), and hetero-bisfunctionalized counterparts containing either two different nucleophiles, two electrophiles or one of these functionalities and a latent nucleophile that can be unmasked when desired. The combination of these bifunctional linchpin reagents using tactics that modulate the reactivity of each terminus in order to achieve the required connection have streamlined the synthesis of polyenes of great complexity using (iterative) cross-coupling methods for Csp2 -Csp2 bond formation. Reaction conditions for the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are mild and functional-group-tolerant, and therefore these protocols allow to construct the polyene structures using shorter unsaturated reactants with the desired geometries, since in general the products preserve the stereochemical information of the connected cross-coupling partners.

Abstract
The zinc-promoted silylation method is of great importance to synthesize high-performance silicon-containing arylacetylene (PSA) resins in the industry. However, it is difficult to eliminate the accompanied by-product of terminal alkenes due to the lack of mechanistic understanding of the silylation. The initiation of zinc-promoted silylation is facilitated by the interaction between zinc and phenylacetylene. Our DFT calculations indicated that the intermolecular hydrogen transfer of phenylacetylene follows an ionic pathway, which generates a phenylacetylene anion and the corresponding alkene moieties on the zinc surface. The styrene by-product is observed in this stage, with its alkene moieties desorbing as radicals into the solvent under the high reaction temperature. Three possible intermediates of surface phenylacetylene anions were proposed including PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Zn, PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CZnCl, and (PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)2Zn. These carbanion-zinc intermediates undergo an SN2 reaction with Me3SiCl to afford the alkynylsilane on the zinc surface, which is calculated to be the rate-determining step for the zinc-promoted silylation reaction.

Abstract
Compared to the biological world's rich chemistry for functionalizing carbon, enzymatic transformations of the heavier homologue silicon are rare. We report that a wild-type cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450BM3 from Bacillus megaterium, CYP102A1) has promiscuous activity for oxidation of hydrosilanes to give silanols. Directed evolution was applied to enhance this non-native activity and create a highly efficient catalyst for selective silane oxidation under mild conditions with oxygen as the terminal oxidant. The evolved enzyme leaves C-H bonds present in the silane substrates untouched, and this biotransformation does not lead to disiloxane formation, a common problem in silanol syntheses. Computational studies reveal that catalysis proceeds through hydrogen atom abstraction followed by radical rebound, as observed in the native C-H hydroxylation mechanism of the P450 enzyme. This enzymatic silane oxidation extends nature's impressive catalytic repertoire.

Abstract
Human aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) are enzymes involved in the reduction, among other substrates, of all-trans-retinal to all-trans-retinol (vitamin A), thus contributing to the control of the levels of retinoids in organisms. Structure-activity relationship studies of a series of C11-to-C14 methyl-shifted (relative to natural C13-methyl) all-trans-retinal analogues as putative substrates of AKRs have been reported. The synthesis of these retinoids was based on the formation of a C10-C11 single bond of the pentaene skeleton starting from a trienyl iodide and the corresponding dienylstannanes and dienylsilanes, using the Stille-Kosugi-Migita and Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions, respectively. Since these reagents differ by the location and presence of methyl groups at the dienylorganometallic fragment, the study also provided insights into the ability of the different positional isomers to undergo cross-coupling and the sensitivity of these processes to steric hindrance. The resulting C11-to-C14 methyl-shifted all-trans-retinal analogues were found to be active substrates when tested with AKR1B1 and AKR1B10 enzymes, although relevant differences in substrate specificities were noted. For AKR1B1, all analogues exhibited higher catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) than parent all-trans-retinal. In addition, only all-trans-11-methylretinal, the most hydrophobic derivative, showed a higher value of kcat/Km = 106 000 ± 23 200 mM-1 min-1 for AKR1B10, which is in fact the highest value from all known retinoid substrates of this enzyme. The novel structures, identified as efficient AKR substrates, may serve in the design of selective inhibitors with potential pharmacological interest.

Abstract
Phenanthroline ligands and [Ir(cod)(OMe)]2 form complexes that catalyze the silylation of aromatic and aliphatic C-H bonds. However, no experimental data on the identity of complexes related to the mechanism of this process or the mechanisms by which they react to functionalize C-H bonds have been reported. Herein, we describe our studies on the mechanism of the iridium-catalyzed silylation of aryl C-H bonds. The resting state of the catalyst is an iridium disilyl hydride complex (phenanthroline)Ir(SiMe(OTMS)2)2(H)(L), in which L varies with the arene and additives. An iridium disilyl hydride complex was isolated, characterized, and allowed to react with arenes to form aryl silanes. The kinetics of the reactions of electron-rich and electron-poor arenes showed that the rate-limiting step varies with the electronic properties of the arene. Computational studies on related iridium silyl complexes revealed that the high activity of iridium complexes containing sterically encumbered phenanthroline ligands is due to a change in the number of silyl groups bound to iridium between the resting state of the catalyst containing the hindered phenanthroline and that containing less-hindered phenanthroline.
