Denitrification Combined with Diazotization of Anilines and the Synthesis of 4′-Chlorobiphenyl-2,5-diamine and 1-Chloro-4-iodobenzene

Synthesis, characterization and application of a novel polyazo dye as a universal acid-base indicator

A novel organic polyazo dye is synthesized by the diazotization of aromatic aniline, followed by coupling it with sulfanilic acid and N,N-dimethylaniline. Characterization was done by ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveals that phase transition for this molecule is exothermic. The optical band gap is estimated from the absorption cutoff point using UV-Visible spectroscopy. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) addresses the thermal stability of the molecule and is found to be at ∼250 °C. The structure of the synthesized molecule is analogous to that of methyl orange and contains three azo groups. These three azo groups help accept more than two protons and provide two pK _a values when diprotic acid or a mixture of acids is used in different titrations. Specifically, when a polybasic acid is in strong base titration, the pK _a values were found to be 3.5 and 9.1. Moreover, for strong base and (strong + weak) acid mixture titration, the pK _a values are found to be 9.2 and 3.3. Furthermore, the pK _a values are found to be 8.6 and 2.8 for (strong and weak) base mixture and (strong and weak) acid mixture titration, respectively. Owing to its increased proton accepting capacity, it can be found in the two pH ranges of 2.1-3.8 for orange color and 8.2-9.8 for yellow color, thus indicating a unique property as a universal indicator for acid-base titration. The dissociation constant of this dye is found to be 3.4 × 10^-6, determined in a mixed aqueous solution of 10 wt% ethanol, and a linear relationship between pK _a and pH is observed in this solvent system.

Cleavage of Organosolv Lignin to Phenols Using Nitrogen Monoxide and Hydrazine

From the variety of methods known for the depolymerization of organosolv lignin, a broad range of diversely substituted aromatic compounds are available today. In the present work, a novel two-step reaction sequence is reported, which is focused on the formation of phenols. While the first step of the depolymerization strategy comprises the 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ)-catalyzed oxidation of organosolv lignin with nitrogen monoxide so that two waste materials are combined, cleavage to the phenolic target compounds is achieved in the second step employing hydrazine and potassium hydroxide under Wolff-Kishner-type conditions. Besides the fact that the novel strategy proceeds via an untypical form of oxidized organosolv lignin, the two-step sequence is further able to provide phenols as cleavage products, which bear no substituent at the 4-position.

Biaryl synthesis with arenediazonium salts: cross-coupling, CH-arylation and annulation reactions

The rich legacy of arenediazonium salts in the synthesis of unsymmetrical biaryls, built around the seminal works of Pschorr, Gomberg and Bachmann more than a century ago, continues to make important contributions at various evolutionary stages of modern biaryl synthesis. Based on in-depth mechanistic analysis and design of novel pathways and reaction conditions, the scope of biaryl synthesis with arenediazonium salts has enormously expanded in recent years through applications of transition metal/photoredox-catalysed cross-coupling, thermal/photosensitized radical chain CH-arylation of (hetero)arenes and arylative radical annulation reactions with alkynes. These recent developments have provided facile synthetic access to a wide variety of unsymmetrical biaryls of pharmaceutical, agrochemical and optoelectronic importance with green scale-up options and created opportunities for late-stage modification of peptides, nucleosides, carbon nanotubes and electrodes, the details of which are captured in this review.

Nitrogen Oxides and Nitric Acid Enable the Sustainable Hydroxylation and Nitrohydroxylation of Benzenes under Visible Light Irradiation

A new type of waste recycling strategy is described in which nitrogen oxides or nitric acid are directly employed in photocatalyzed hydroxylations and nitrohydroxylations of benzenes. Through these transformations, otherwise costly denitrification can be combined with the synthesis of valuable compounds for various applications.

Radical Arylation of Anilines and Pyrroles via Aryldiazotates

The radical arylation of anilines and pyrroles can be achieved under transition-metal- and catalyst-free conditions by using aryldiazotates in strongly alkaline aqueous solutions. The aryldiazotates act as protected diazonium ions, which do not undergo azo coupling with electron-rich aromatic substrates, but can still serve as an aryl radical source at slightly elevated temperatures. Based on an improved preparation of aryldiazotates in aqueous solution, homolytic aromatic substitutions of anilines and pyrroles were conducted with good overall yields and high regioselectivity. Moreover, DFT calculations provided further mechanistic insights.

Sustainable Synthesis of Balsalazide and Sulfasalazine Based on Diazotization with Low Concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide in Air

Low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, which arises as a side product from a range of industrial processes, can effectively be recycled through the diazotization of anilines. The studies reported herein now demonstrate that the removal of nitrogen dioxide from gas streams is even more effective when hydrophilic anilines are used as starting materials. The diazonium salts, which are obtained in this way in up to quantitative yields, can directly be employed in azo coupling reactions, thus opening up an attractive route to the industrially important group of azo compounds.

Thermally Induced Carbohydroxylation of Styrenes with Aryldiazonium Salts

The radical carbohydroxylation of styrenes with aryldiazonium salts has been achieved under mild thermal conditions. A broad range of aryldiazonium salts was tolerated, and the reaction principle based on a radical-polar crossover mechanism could be extended to carboetherification as well as to a two-step, metal-free variant of the Meerwein arylation leading to stilbenes.
