Gas-phase synthesis and structure of thorium benzyne complexes

The thorium benzyne complex (η²-C₆H₄)ThCl₃^- was synthesized in the gas phase through consecutive decarboxylation and dehydrochlorination from the (C₆H₅CO₂)ThCl₄^- precursor upon collision-induced dissociation. Theoretical calculations suggest that (η²-C₆H₄)ThCl₃^- exhibits a metallacyclopropene structure with two polarized Th-C_benzyne σ bonds. This procedure can be generally extended to the synthesis of a wide range of gas-phase thorium benzyne complexes.

Discrimination and quantitation of halobenzoic acid positional isomers upon Th(IV) coordination by mass spectrometry

A fast and reliable mass spectrometry-based method has been developed to discriminate the positional isomers of o-, m- and p-C₆H₄XCO₂H (X = F, Cl and Br). This is based on the distinct fragmentation patterns of isomeric ThCl₄(C₆H₄XCO₂)^- ions generated by electrospray ionization of the solutions with C₆H₄XCO₂H isomers and ThCl₄. Moreover, the composition of these positional isomers can be conveniently quantified without any pre-treatment according to the proportion of gas-phase fragmentation products.

How 5 f Electron Polarisability Drives Covalency and Selectivity in Actinide N-Donor Complexes

We report a series of isostructural tetravalent actinide (Th, U−Pu) complexes with the N‐donor ligand N,N’‐ethylene‐bis((pyrrole‐2‐yl)methanimine) (H₂L, H₂pyren). Structural data from SC‐XRD analysis reveal [An(pyren)₂] complexes with different An−N_imine versus An−N_pyrrolide bond lengths. Quantum chemical calculations elucidated the bonding situation, including differences in the covalent character of the coordinative bonds. A comparison to the intensely studied analogous N,N′‐ethylene‐bis(salicylideneimine) (H₂salen)‐based complexes [An(salen)₂] displays, on average, almost equal electron sharing of pyren or salen with the An^IV, pointing to a potential ligand‐cage‐driven complex stabilisation. This is shown in the fixed ligand arrangement of pyren and salen in the respective An^IV complexes. The overall bond strength of the pure N‐donor ligand pyren to An^IV (An=Th, U, Np, Pu) is slightly weaker than to salen, with the exception of the Pa^IV complex, which exhibits extraordinarily high electron sharing of pyren with Pa^IV. Such an altered ligand preference within the early An^IV series points to a specificity of the 5f¹ configuration, which can be explained by polarisation effects of the 5 f electrons, allowing the strongest f electron backbonding from Pa^IV (5f¹) to the N donors of pyren.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and bonding analysis of two-coordinate copper(I) and silver(I) complexes of pyrrole-based bis(phosphinimine): new metal-pyrrole ring π-interactions

The reaction between 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole and Me3SiN3 gave the new pyrrole-based bis(phosphinimine) L1H in an excellent yield. L1H reacts with [CuCl(COD)]2, AgBF4, or AgOTf to give the corresponding two-coordinate mononuclear ionic complex formulated as [M{(L1H)-κ2N,N}]+[X]- where M = Cu and Ag; X = [CuCl2], BF4 or OTf. Their single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the two-coordinate geometry formed by the chelate bonding mode of L1H. These 10-membered metalacycles exhibit planar chirality and were also characterized by spectroscopic methods. In addition, in all three structures, there exists a hitherto unknown π-interaction between the pyrrole ring atoms and metal, represented as η2-(Cα-N) in the copper(i) complex, and η3-(Cα-N-Cα') in the silver(i) complexes. These weak interactions were supported by DFT calculations in terms of their electron densities, non-covalent interaction plots and the decrease in the aromaticity of the pyrrole ring.
