Tetrylenes: Electronic Structure, Stability, Reactivity, and Ligand Properties—A Comparative DFT Study

Applications of low-valent compounds with heavy group-14 elements

Over the last two decades, the low-valent compounds of group-14 elements have received significant attention in several fields of chemistry owing to their unique electronic properties. The low-valent group-14 species include tetrylenes, tetryliumylidene, tetrylones, dimetallenes and dimetallynes. These low-valent group-14 species have shown applications in various areas such as organic transformations (hydroboration, cyanosilylation, N-functionalisation of amines, and hydroamination), small molecule activation (e.g. P4, As4, CO2, CO, H2, alkene, and alkyne) and materials. This review presents an in-depth discussion on low-valent group-14 species-catalyzed reactions, including polymerization of rac-lactide, L-lactide, DL-lactide, and caprolactone, followed by their photophysical properties (phosphorescence and fluorescence), thin film deposition (atomic layer deposition and vapor phase deposition), and medicinal applications. This review concisely summarizes current developments of low-valent heavier group-14 compounds, covering synthetic methodologies, structural aspects, and their applications in various fields of chemistry. Finally, their opportunities and challenges are examined and emphasized.

The Field of Main Group Lewis Acids and Lewis Superacids: Important Basics and Recent Developments

New developments in the field of Lewis acidity are highlighted, with the focus of novel Lewis acids and Lewis superacids of group 2, 13, 14, and 15 elements. Several important basics, illustrated by modern examples (classification of Donor-Acceptor (DA) complexes, amphoteric nature of any compound in terms of DA interactions, reorganization energies of main group Lewis acids and the role of the energies of frontier orbitals) are presented and discussed. It is emphasized that the Lewis acidity phenomena are general and play vital role in different areas of chemistry: from weak "atomophilic" interactions to the complexes of Lewis superacids.

Structures, Bonding Analyses and Reactivity of a Dicationic Digallene and Diindene Mimicking trans-bent Ditetrylenes

The reaction of bisdicyclohexylphosphinoethane (dcpe) and the subvalent MI sources [MI (PhF)2 ][pf] (M=Ga+ , In+ ; [pf]- =[Al(ORF )4 ]- ; RF =C(CF3 )3 ) yielded the salts [{M(dcpe)}2 ][pf]2 , containing the first dicationic, trans-bent digallene and diindene structures reported so far. The non-classical MI ⇆MI double bonds are surprisingly short and display a ditetrylene-like structure. The bonding situation was extensively analyzed by quantum chemical calculations, QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) and EDA-NOCV (Energy Decomposition Analysis with the combination of Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence) analyses and is compared to that in the isoelectronic and isostructural, but neutral digermenes and distannenes. The dissolved [{Ga(dcpe)}2 ]2+ ([pf]- )2 readily reacts with 1-hexene, cyclooctyne, diphenyldisulfide, diphenylphosphine and under mild conditions at room temperature. This reactivity is analyzed and rationalized.

The First Planar, Not Twisted, Distannene - A Structural Alkene Analog. Synthesis, Isolation and X-ray Crystallography Characterization

The tetrasilyl-substituted distannene, (tBu2 HSi)2 Sn=Sn(SiHtBu2 )2 6, was synthesized by mild thermolysis (70 °C in hexane) of tris(di-tert-butyl-hydridosilyl)stannane 4. The X-ray crystallography structure of 6 reveals the following unusual structural properties: a planar geometry around both Sn atoms (Σ∡Sn=359.87°), a non-twisted Sn=Sn double bond, and the shortest Sn=Sn double bond of 2.599 Å among all acyclic distannenes. Thus, compound 6 is the first reported distannene having a structure closely analogous to a classic alkene. Reactions of 6 with CCl4 or with 2,3-dimethylbuta-1,3-diene to produce 1,2-dichlorodistannane 9 and the [2+4] cycloadduct 10, respectively, are characteristic for a Sn=Sn double bond.

Reactivity of a Strictly T-Shaped Phosphine Ligated by an Acridane Derived NNN Pincer Ligand

The steric tuning of a tridentate acridane-derived NNN pincer ligand allows for the isolation of a strictly T-shaped phosphine that exhibits ambiphilic reactivity. Well-defined phosphorus-centered reactivity towards nucleophiles and electrophiles is reported, contrasting with prior reports on this class of compounds. Reactions towards oxidants are also described. The latter result in the two-electron oxidation of the phosphorus atom from +III to +V and are accompanied by a strong geometric distortion of the NNN pincer ligand. By contrast, cooperative activation of E-H (HCl, HBcat, HOMe) bonds proceeds with retention of the phosphorus redox state. When using H2 O as a substrate, the reaction results in the full disassembly of H2 O to its constituent atoms, highlighting the potential of this platform for small molecule activation reactions.

Hydridotetrylene [Ar*EH] (E = Ge, Sn, Pb) coordination at tantalum, tungsten, and zirconium

In a reaction of tantalocene trihydride with the low valent aryl tin cation [Ar*Sn(C₆H₆)][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄] (1a) the hydridostannylene complex [Cp₂TaH₂–Sn(H)Ar*][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄] (2) was synthesized. Hydride bridged adducts [Cp₂WH₂EAr*][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄] (E = Sn 3a, Pb 3b) were isolated as products of the reaction between Cp₂WH₂ and cations [Ar*E(C₆H₆)][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄] (E = Sn 1a, Pb 1b). The tin adduct 3a exhibits a proton migration to give the hydridostannylene complex [Cp₂W(H) Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Sn(H)Ar*][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄] 4a. The cationic complex 4a is deprotonated at the tin atom in reaction with base ^MeNHC at 80 °C to give a hydrido-tungstenostannylene [Cp₂W(H)SnAr*] 5a. Reprotonation of metallostannylene 5a with acid [H(Et₂O)₂][BAr^F] provides an alternative route to hydridotetrylene coordination. Complex 4a adds hydride to give the dihydrostannyl complex [Cp₂W(H)–SnH₂Ar*] (7). With styrene 4a shows formation of a hydrostannylation product [Cp₂W(H)Sn(CH₂CH₂Ph)Ar*][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄] (8). The lead adduct 3b was deprotonated with ^MeNHC to give plumbylene 5b [Cp₂W(H)PbAr*]. Protonation of 5b with [H(Et₂O)₂][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄] at −40 °C followed by low temperature NMR spectroscopy indicates a hydridoplumbylene intermediate [Cp₂W(H)Pb(H)Ar*]⁺ (4b). Hydrido-tungstenotetrylenes of elements Ge (5c), Sn (5a) and Pb (5b) were also synthesized reacting the salt [Cp₂W(H)Li]₄ with organotetrylene halides. The metallogermylene [Cp₂W(H)GeAr*] (5c) shows an isomerization via 1,2-H-migration to give the hydridogermylene [Cp₂WGe(H)Ar*] (9), which is accelerated by addition of AIBN. 9 is at rt photochemically transferred back to 5c under light of a mercury vapor lamp. Zirconocene dihydride [Cp₂ZrH₂]₂ reacts with tin cation 1a to give the trinuclear hydridostannylene adduct 10 [({Cp₂Zr}₂{μ-H})(μ-H)₂μ-Sn(H)Ar*][Al(OC{CF₃}₃)₄]. Deprotonation of 10 was carried out using benzyl potassium to give neutral [({Cp₂Zr}₂{μ-H})(μ-H)μ-Sn(H)Ar*] (11). 11 was also obtained from the reaction of low valent tin hydride [Ar*SnH]₂ with two equivalents of [Cp₂ZrH₂]₂. The trihydride Ar*SnH₃ reacts with half of an equivalent of [Cp₂ZrH₂]₂ under evolution of hydrogen and formation of a dihydrostannyl complex 13 [Cp₂Zr(μ-H)SnH₂Ar*]₂ and with further equivalents of Ar*SnH₃ to give bis(hydridostannylene) complex [Cp₂Zr{Sn(H)Ar*}₂].

Low valent cations of tin and lead were used to form hydridotetrylene coordination compounds. The mobility of the hydrogen substituent was investigated in deprotonation equilibria as well as in 1,2-H-shift reactions.

Calix[4]pyrrolato Stannate(II): A Tetraamido Tin(II) Dianion and Strong Metal‐Centered σ‐Donor

Anionic, metal‐centered nucleophiles are emerging compounds with unique reactivities. Here, we describe the isolation and full characterization of the first tetraamido tin(II) dianion, its behavior as ligand towards transition metals, and its reactivity as a tin‐centered nucleophile. Experimental values such as the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) and computations attest tin‐located σ‐donor ability exceeding that of carbenes or electron‐rich phosphines. Against transition metals, the stannate(II) can act as η¹‐ or η⁵‐type ligand. With aldehydes, it reacts by hydride substitution to give valuable acyl stannates. The reductive dehalogenation of iodobenzene indicates facile redox pathways mediated by halogen bond interaction. Calix[4]pyrrolato stannate(II) represents the first example of this macrocyclic ligand in low‐valent p‐block element chemistry.
