Unsymmetrically Substituted Bis(phosphino)Ferrocenes Triggering Through-Space 31(P, P′)-Nuclear Spin Couplings and Encapsulating Coinage Metal Cations

Beyond phosphorus: synthesis, reactivity, coordination behaviour and catalytic properties of 1,1'-bis(diphenylstibino)ferrocene

Compared to their widely studied phosphine counterparts, ferrocene stibines have received only marginal attention thus far. This paper describes the synthesis of 1,1'-bis(diphenylstibino)ferrocene (1*), which is an antimony analogue of the ubiquitous dppf, and our investigations into the reactivity and coordination behaviour of this compound. Thus, distibine 1 was oxidised to stiboranes fc(SbPh₂X₂)₂ (X = Cl, 2*; F, 6*; fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl) and to stibine-stiborane Ph₂SbfcSbPh₂F₂ (5*). Compounds 2 and 6 were easily hydrolysed to produce ferrocenophanes fc[SbPh₂XOSbPh₂X] (X = Cl, 3*; F, 7*). Removing the halogen from 3 with silver(I) salts afforded the corresponding ferrocenophanes with O-bound oxyanions, fc[SbPh₂ZOSbPh₂Z] (Z = NO₃, 4a*; ClO₄, 4b*), which were alternatively prepared from 2 and also converted back to 2 by adding a chloride source. Through investigations into the coordination behaviour of distibine 1, the following compounds were isolated and characterised: [(μ-ClO₄)₂{Ag(1-κ²Sb,Sb')}₂] (8*), [Ag(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X (X = ClO₄, 9a; SbF₆, 9b*), [(μ(Sb,Sb')-1){(arene)MCl₂}₂] (10*, 11*) and [(arene)MCl(1-κ²Sb,Sb')][PF₆] (12*, 13*; 10, 12: M/arene = Ru/η⁶-p-cymene, 11, 13; Rh/η⁵-C₅Me₅), [(η⁵-C₅Me₅)RuCl(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (14), [MCl₂(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (M = Pd, 15*; Pt, 16*), [Pd(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X₂ (X = BF₄, 17a; SbF₆, 17b*), [Pd(η²-ma)(1-κ²Sb,Sb')] (18*; ma = maleic anhydride), [(μ(Sb,Sb')-1)(AuCl)₂] (19*), and [Au(1-κ²Sb,Sb')₂]X (X = AuCl₂, 20a*; SbF₆, 20b*). Inspection of the structural parameters suggested that complexes featuring 1 exhibit less sterically strained structures than their dppf analogues due to longer M-Sb and Sb-C bonds, which reduce crowding around the ligated metal centre. Cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations revealed that the primary electrochemical oxidation of 1 is reversible and occurs at the ferrocene unit. Based on preliminary catalytic tests in Suzuki-Miyaura biaryl coupling, Pd-1 complexes exhibited a lower efficiency than their respective Pd-dppf analogues. Hybrid Phosphine/Amino-Acid Ligands Built on Phenyl and Ferrocenyl Platforms: Application in the Suzuki Coupling of o-Dibromobenzene with Fluorophenylboronic Acid

We describe the synthesis and characterization of two classes of hybrid phosphino ligands functionalized with amino ester or amino acid groups. These compounds are built either on a rigid planar phenyl platform or on a functionalized - conformationally controlled - rotational ferrocene backbone. Modifications at the -PR₂ phosphino groups (R=aryl and alkyl, with various steric bulk, Ph, Mes, i-Pr, Cy) and at the amino acid/amino ester functions are reported, showing a valuable high modularity. The coordination chemistry of these compounds regarding palladium and gold was investigated, in particular with respect to the coordination mode of the phosphino groups and the preferred interaction with metals for the amino ester and amino acid functions. For all the hybrid ligands, based either on ferrocenyl or phenyl platforms, the (P,N)-chelating effect dominates in solution for coordination to Pd(II), while linear P-Au(I) complexes without interaction with the amino groups are assumed. The investigation of the catalytic activity of these new ligands in the demanding palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of o-dibromoarenes with fluorophenylboronic acid underlined the importance of the amino ester dicyclohexylphosphinoferrocene for avoiding the deleterious homocoupling and arene oligomerization side-reactions that were otherwise observed with the other phosphine ligands.

Transmission of spin-polarization by π-orbitals: an approach to assessing its effect on NMR spin-spin coupling and EPR hyperfine structure

A new approach to assessing the effect of the transmission of spin-polarization by π-orbitals (π-TSP) is presented. In order to switch off the π-TSP effect, we artificially average the α- and β-densities of the valence π-orbitals when calculating the exchange-correlation contribution to the Fock matrix in the unrestricted Kohn-Sham framework. The π-TSP effect is then evaluated as the difference between the results obtained with switched-on and switched-off options. This approach is applied to estimate the π-TSP effect on the Fermi-contact contribution to spin-spin couplings and EPR hyperfine structure coupling constants. The π-TSP effect on the distribution of spin-density, spin-spin coupling pathways and pathways of EPR hyperfine couplings is demonstrated for benzene, naphthalene, 1,3,5,7,9-decapentaene and the 1,3,5,7,9-decapentaen-1-yl radical. The sign alternation of the spin-polarization transmitted by π-orbitals is explained in a theoretical framework based on perturbation theory. However, the delocalized nature of the π-system can interfere with the sign alternation in certain cases, two of which - the cyclobutadiene dication and the cyclooctatetraene dication - are examined, and an explanation for which is provided.
