Thiolate-Bridged Nickel–Iron and Nickel–Ruthenium Complexes Relevant to the CO-Inhibited State of [NiFe]-Hydrogenase

Stepwise Reduction of Redox Noninnocent Nitrosobenzene to Aniline via a Rare Phenylhydroxylamino Intermediate on a Thiolate-Bridged Dicobalt Scaffold

Nitrosobenzene (PhNO) and phenylhydroxylamine (PhNHOH) are of paramount importance because of their involvement as crucial intermediates in the biological metabolism and catalytic transformation of nitrobenzene (PhNO2) to aniline (PhNH2). However, a complete reductive transformation cycle of PhNO to PhNH2 via the PhNHOH intermediate has not been reported yet. In this context, we design and construct a new thiolate-bridged dicobalt scaffold that can accomplish coordination activation and reductive transformation of PhNO. Notably, an unprecedented reversible ligand-based redox sequence PhNO0 ↔ PhNO•- ↔ PhNO2- can be achieved on this well-defined {CoIII(μ-SPh)2CoIII} functional platform. Further detailed reactivity investigations demonstrate that the PhNO0 and PhNO•- complexes cannot react with the usual hydrogen and hydride donors to afford the corresponding phenylhydroxylamino (PhNHO-) species. However, the double reduced PhNO2- complex can readily undergo N-protonation with an uncommon weak proton donor PhSH to selectively yield a stable dicobalt PhNHO- bridged complex with a high pKa value of 13-16. Cyclic voltammetry shows that there are two successive reduction events at E1/2 = -0.075 V and Ep = -1.08 V for the PhNO0 complex, which allows us to determine both bond dissociation energy (BDEN-H) of 59-63 kcal·mol-1 and thermodynamic hydricity (ΔGH-) of 71-75 kcal·mol-1 of the PhNHO- complex. Both values indicate that the PhNO•- complex is not a potent hydrogen abstractor and the PhNO0 complex is not an efficient hydride acceptor. In the presence of BH3 as a combination of protons and electrons, facile N-O bond cleavage of the coordinated PhNHO- group can be realized to generate PhNH2 and a dicobalt hydroxide-bridged complex. Overall, we present the first stepwise reductive sequence, PhNO0 ↔ PhNO•- ↔ PhNO2- ↔ PhNHO- → PhNH2.

Redox induced S-S bond cleavage of 2,2'-dithiobisbenzothiazole - leading to a [2Ru-2S] core analogous to [2Fe-2S] cluster

Facile reduction of 2,2'-dithiobisbenzothiazole by the mediation of metal-to-ligand charge transfer or by internal reducing equivalent is demonstrated. It leads to various binding modes of thiolates (κ¹, κ², μ) in a series of mononuclear and dinuclear ruthenium complexes. The dinuclear complex exhibited electron transfer processes similar to a [2Fe-2S] cluster.

A bioinspired thiolate-bridged dinickel complex with a pendant amine: synthesis, structure and electrocatalytic properties

By employing X(CH₂CH₂S^-)₂ (X = S, tpdt; X = O, opdt; X = NPh, npdt) as bridging ligands, four thiolate-bridged dinickel complexes supported by phosphine ligands, [(dppe)Ni(μ-1SSS':2SS-tpdt)Ni(dppe)][PF₆]₂ (1[PF₆]₂, dppe = Ph₂P(CH₂)₂PPh₂), [(dppe)Ni(μ-1SSN:2SS-npdt)Ni(dppe)][PF₆]₂ (2[PF₆]₂) and [(dppe)Ni(t-Cl)(μ-1SSX:2SS-C₄H₈S₂X)Ni(dppe)][PF₆] (3[PF₆], X = S; 4[PF₆], X = O) were facilely obtained by the salt metathesis reaction. These four thiolate-bridged dinickel complexes have all been fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography. In 2[PF₆]₂, elongation of the Ni-N bond distance, possibly caused by steric hindrance, indicates that the pendant nitrogen group shuttles between the two nickel centers in solution, which is evidenced by ³¹P{¹H} NMR spectroscopic results. Furthermore, these thiolate-bridged dinickel complexes have all been proved to be electrocatalysts for proton reduction to hydrogen. Notably, complex 2[PF₆]₂ featuring a pendant amine group in the secondary coordination sphere exhibits the best catalytic activity at a relatively low overpotential.

Crystal structure of NiFe(CO)5[tris(pyridyl-meth-yl)aza-phosphatrane]: a synthetic mimic of the NiFe hydrogenase active site incorporating a pendant pyridine base

The reaction of Ni(TPAP)(COD) {where TPAP = [(NC5H4)CH2]3P(NC2H4)3N} with Fe(CO)5 resulted in the isolation of the title heterobimetallic NiFe(TPAP)(CO)5 complex di-μ-carbonyl-tricarbon-yl[2,8,9-tris-(pyridin-2-yl-meth-yl)-2,5,8,9-tetra-aza-1-phosphabi-cyclo-[3.3.3]undeca-ne]ironnickel, [FeNi(C24H30N7P)(CO)5]. Characterization of the complex by 1H and 31P NMR as well as IR spectroscopy are presented. The structure of NiFe(TPAP)(CO)5 reveals three terminally bound CO mol-ecules on Fe0, two bridging CO mol-ecules between Ni0 and Fe0, and TPAP coordinated to Ni0. The Ni-Fe bond length is 2.4828 (4) Å, similar to that of the reduced form of the active site of NiFe hydrogenase (∼2.5 Å). Additionally, a proximal pendant base from one of the non-coordinating pyridine groups of TPAP is also present. Although involvement of a pendant base has been cited in the mechanism of NiFe hydrogenase, this moiety has yet to be incorporated in a structurally characterized synthetic mimic with key structural motifs (terminally bound CO or CN ligands on Fe). Thus, the title complex NiFe(TPAP)(CO)5 is an unique synthetic model for NiFe hydrogenase. In the crystal, the complex mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming undulating layers parallel to (100). Within the layers, there are offset π-π [inter-centroid distance = 3.2739 (5) Å] and C-H⋯π inter-actions present. The layers are linked by further C-H⋯π inter-actions, forming a supra-molecular framework.

Furthermore, terminal alkynes can insert the Rh-H-Rh fragment to afford σ:π alkenyl bridged complexes and then convert to the corresponding alkenes in the presence of a reductant and an acid.

Highly β( Z)-Selective Hydrosilylation of Terminal Alkynes Catalyzed by Thiolate-Bridged Dirhodium Complexes

A series of novel monothiolate-bridged dirhodium complexes, [Cp*Rh(μ-SR)(μ-Cl)₂RhCp*][BF₄] {Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅, R = tertiary butyl ( ^tBu), 1a; R = ferrocenyl (Fc), 1b; R = adamantyl (Ad), 1c} were designed and successfully synthesized, which can smoothly facilitate highly regioselective and stereoselective hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes to afford β( Z) vinylsilanes with good functional group compatibility. Furthermore, the hydride bridged dirhodium complex [Cp*Rh(μ-S ^tBu)(μ-Cl)(μ-H)RhCp*][BF₄] (5) as a potential intermediate was obtained by the reaction of 1a with excess HSiEt₃.

Heterobimetallic [NiFe] Complexes Containing Mixed CO/CN- Ligands: Analogs of the Active Site of the [NiFe] Hydrogenases

The development of synthetic analogs of the active sites of [NiFe] hydrogenases remains challenging, and, in spite of the number of complexes featuring a [NiFe] center, those featuring CO and CN^- ligands at the Fe center are under-represented. We report herein the synthesis of three bimetallic [NiFe] complexes [Ni( N₂ S₂)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂], [Ni( S₄)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂], and [Ni( N₂ S₃)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂] that each contain a Ni center that bridges through two thiolato S donors to a {Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂} unit. X-ray crystallographic studies on [Ni( N₂ S₃)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂], supported by DFT calculations, are consistent with a solid-state structure containing distinct molecules in the singlet ( S = 0) and triplet ( S = 1) states. Each cluster exhibits irreversible reduction processes between -1.45 and -1.67 V vs Fc⁺/Fc and [Ni( N₂ S₃)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂] possesses a reversible oxidation process at 0.17 V vs Fc⁺/Fc. Spectroelectrochemical infrared (IR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, are consistent with a Ni^IIIFe^II formulation for [Ni( N₂ S₃)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂]⁺. The singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) in [Ni( N₂ S₃)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂]⁺ is based on Ni 3d_z² and 3p S with the S contributions deriving principally from the apical S-donor. The nature of the SOMO corresponds to that proposed for the Ni-C state of the [NiFe] hydrogenases for which a Ni^IIIFe^II formulation has also been proposed. A comparison of the experimental structures, and the electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of [Ni( N₂ S₃)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂] and its [Ni( N₂ S₃)] precursor, together with calculations on the oxidized [Ni( N₂ S₃)Fe(CO)₂(CN)₂]⁺ and [Ni( N₂ S₃)]⁺ forms suggests that the binding of the {Fe(CO)(CN)₂} unit to the {Ni(CysS)₄} center at the active site of the [NiFe] hydrogenases suppresses thiolate-based oxidative chemistry involving the bridging thiolate S donors. This is in addition to the role of the Fe center in modulating the redox potential and geometry and supporting a bridging hydride species between the Ni and Fe centers in the Ni-C state.

Synthesis and reactivity of thiolate-bridged multi-iron complexes supported by cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene

The combined utilization of Me₂-cAAC (Me₂-cAAC = :C(CH₂)(CMe₂)₂N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃) and thiolates as supporting ligands enables the access of unprecedented carbene coordinated thiolate-bridged diiron(ii) complexes [(Me₂-cAAC)Fe(μ-SR)(Br)]₂ (R = Me, 3; R = Et, 4). The coordination environment of each tetrahedral iron(ii) center in complexes 3 and 4 is composed of one terminal bromide atom, one carbene carbon atom and two thiolate sulfur atoms, which is similar to the carbide-containing sulfur-rich environment of iron centers in the belt region of the FeMo-cofactor. Interestingly, when NaSCPh₃ was chosen as the thiolate ligand, C-S bond homolysis occurred to form a rare [3 : 1] site-differentiated cubane-type cluster [(Me₂-cAAC)Fe₄S₄(Br)₃][Me₂-cAACH] (5). Furthermore, complexes 3 and 4 exhibit good exchange reactivity toward the azide anion to give novel thiolate-bridged diiron complexes with two azido ligands in a trans arrangement.

Synthesis and characterization of a family of thioether-dithiolate-bridged heteronuclear iron complexes

The thioether-dithiolate-bridged heterotrinuclear complexes [Cp*Fe(μ-1_k³SSS':2_k²SS-tpdt)M(μ-2_k²SS:3_k³SSS'-tpdt)FeCp*][PF₆]₂ (Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅; tpdt = S(CH₂CH₂S)₂; 2, M = Co; 3, M = Ni; 4, M = Pd) have been prepared by a reaction of [Cp*Fe(η³-tpdt)] (1) with complexes CoCl₂, NiCl₂(PPh₃)₂, and PdCl₂(PPh₃)₂, respectively. Similarly, treatment of complex 1 with CuCl(PPh₃) or AgPF₆ afforded two heterotrinuclear complexes, [Cp*Fe(μ-1_k³SSS':2_k²SS-tpdt)M(μ-2_k²SS:3_k³SSS'-tpdt)FeCp*][PF₆] (5, M = Cu; 6, M = Ag), while reaction of 1 with the complex AuCl(PPh₃) gave a heterobinuclear complex, [Cp*Fe(μ-1_k³SSS':2_k¹S-tpdt)Au(PPh₃)][PF₆] (7). These complexes have been spectroscopically and crystallographically characterized. An X-ray diffraction analysis showed that complexes 2, 3, 5, and 6 feature a heterometal center binding four sulfur atoms of two tpdt ligands with a cis orientation. However, in the Pd-containing complex 4, two tpdt ligands are arranged in a trans configuration. The μ_eff data and EPR results indicate that complexes 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are paramagnetic and only complex 3 is diamagnetic. Electrochemical experiments on these heteronuclear clusters were performed at room temperature. Discrepancy of the redox couples in the CV plots of these complexes indicates different one-electron transfer processes.

Synthesis, structural characterization and conversion of dinuclear iron-sulfur clusters containing the disulfide ligand: [Cp*Fe(μ-η2:η2-bdt)(cis-μ-η1:η1-S2)FeCp*], [Cp*Fe(μ-S(C6H4S2))(cis-μ-η1:η1-S2)FeCp*], and [{Cp*Fe(bdt)}2(trans-μ-η1:η1-S2)]

The treatment of [Cp*Fe(μ-η²:η⁴-bdt)FeCp*] (1, Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅, bdt = benzene-1,2-dithiolate) with 1/4 equiv. of elemental sulfur (S₈) gave a dinuclear iron-sulfur cluster [Cp*Fe(μ-η²:η²-bdt)(cis-μ-η¹:η¹-S₂)FeCp*] (2), which contains a cis-1,2-disulfide ligand. When complex 2 further interacted with 1/8 equiv. of S₈, another sulfur atom inserted into an Fe-S bond to give a rare product [Cp*Fe(μ-S(C₆H₄S₂))(cis-μ-η¹:η¹-S₂)FeCp*] (3). Unexpectedly, a trans-1,2 disulfide-bridged diiron complex [{Cp*Fe(bdt)}₂(trans-μ-η¹:η¹-S₂)] (4) was isolated from the reaction of complex 1 with 1/2 equiv. of S₈, which represents a structural isomer of [2Fe-2S] ferredoxin-type clusters. In addition, cis-1,2-disulfide-bridged complex 3 can slowly convert into trans-1,2-disulfide-bridged complex 4 and the complex [Cp*Fe(μ-η²:η²-S₂)(cis-μ-η¹:η¹-S₂)FeCp*] (5) by self-assembly reaction at ambient temperature, which is evidenced by time-dependent ¹H NMR spectroscopy.

Structural characterization and proton reduction electrocatalysis of thiolate-bridged bimetallic (CoCo and CoFe) complexes

Using an assembly method, dinuclear CoCo and CoFe complexes supported by a bdt ligand, [Cp*Co(μ–η²:η²-bdt)(μ-I)CoCp*][PF₆] (1[PF6], Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅, bdt = benzene-1,2-dithiolate), and [Cp*Co(μ–η²:η⁴-bdt)FeCp′][PF₆] (3[PF6], Cp′ = η⁵-C₅Me₄H) were synthesized in high yields.
