Experimental and Theoretical Studies on the Mechanism of the C–S Bond Activation of PdII Thiolate/Thioether Complexes

Desulfurization of thiosemicarbazones: the role of metal ions and biological implications

Thiosemicarbazones are biologically active substances whose structural formula is formed by an azomethine, an hydrazine, and a thioamide fragments, to generate a R2C=N-NR-C(=S)-NR2 backbone. These compounds often act as ligands to generate highly stable metal-organic complexes. In certain experimental conditions, however, thiosemicarbazones undergo reactions leading to the cleavage of the chain. Sometimes, the breakage involves desulfurization processes. The present work summarizes the different chemical factors that influence the desulfurization reactions of thiosemicarbazones, such as pH, the presence of oxidant reactants or the establishment of redox processes as those electrochemically induced, the effects of the solvent, the temperature, and the electromagnetic radiation. Many of these reactions require coordination of thiosemicarbazones to metal ions, even those present in the intracellular environment. The nature of the products generated in these reactions, their detection in vivo and in vitro, together with the relevance for the biological activity of these compounds, mainly as antineoplastic agents, is discussed.

Transition-metal mediated carbon-sulfur bond activation and transformations: an update

Carbon-sulfur bond cross-coupling has become more and more attractive as an alternative protocol to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Diverse transformations through transition-metal-catalyzed C-S bond activation and cleavage have recently been developed. This review summarizes the advances in transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling via carbon-sulfur bond activation and cleavage since late 2012 as an update of the critical review on the same topic published in early 2013 (Chem. Soc. Rev., 2013, 42, 599-621), which is presented by the categories of organosulfur compounds, that is, thioesters, thioethers including heteroaryl, aryl, vinyl, alkyl, and alkynyl sulfides, ketene dithioacetals, sulfoxides including DMSO, sulfones, sulfonyl chlorides, sulfinates, thiocyanates, sulfonium salts, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfonates, thiophene-based compounds, and C[double bond, length as m-dash]S functionality-bearing compounds such as thioureas, thioamides, and carbon disulfide, as well as the mechanistic insights. An overview of C-S bond cleavage reactions with stoichiometric transition-metal reagents is briefly given. Theoretical studies on the reactivity of carbon-sulfur bonds by DFT calculations are also discussed.

Crystal structures of 4,4'-(disulfane-1,2-diyl)bis(5-methyl-2H-1,3-dithiol-2-one) and 4,4'-(diselanane-1,2-diyl)bis(5-methyl-2H-1,3-dithiol-2-one)

The two title compounds, C8H6O2S6 and C8H6O2S4Se2, are isotypic with very similar cell parameters. The complete mol-ecules constitute the asymmetric units, despite being chemically perfectly symmetric. The most prominant differences in the metrical parameters arise from the distinct sizes of sulfur and selenium in the dichalcogenide bridges, with C-S-S-C and C-Se-Se-C torsion angles of 70.70 (5) and 68.88 (3)°, respectively. The crystal packing is determined by weak non-classical hydrogen-bonding inter-actions. One carbonyl oxygen but not the other participates in C-H⋯O inter-actions zigzagging along the b axis, forming infinite chains. This is complemented by an intra-molecular C-H⋯S inter-action and further inter-molecular C-H⋯S (C-H⋯Se) inter-actions, resulting in a three-dimensional network. The inter-actions involving the bridging chalcogenides form chains protruding along the c axis.
