Remarkable Magnetic Coupling Interactions in Multi-Beryllium-Expanded Small Graphene-like Molecules with Well-Defined Polyradical Characters

Endohedral σ-Diradical Nitrogen-Vacancy Diamond Nanoclusters with a Confined Magnetic Space and Strong Electronic Spin Couplings

The electronic properties and their modulations for the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in various nanoscale diamonds are of profound current interest because of their potential applications. However, although the NV centers as chromophores in diamond are the most widely studied, surprisingly, little is known about their magnetic spin coupling properties up to now. Here, we for the first time show, using the spin-polarized DFT calculations, that the NV centers can act as unique endohedral σ-diradical magnets in diamond nanoclusters and exhibit quite strong ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin coupling characteristics due to their unique endotetrahedral structures with favorable radical-radical contacts. Although the neutral NV center (NV⁰) in its doublet ground state exhibits quite strong AFM spin coupling among three radical C-sites (i.e., an AFM triradical center), interestingly, excess electron injection can convert it to a FM diradical magnet (i.e., the triplet ground state NV^-) with almost unchanged J-coupling magnitude, and the J-coupling of the nanocluster can be noticeably enhanced by F-termination of the surface due to triradical spin delocalization mediated by excess electron. However, interior modification (one C in the endotetrahedron core is substituted by N or B or is hydrogenated) can assign the nanocluster perfect AFM diradical character. The spin coupling strength presents a quasilinear correlation with the distance between the two C radicals in the NV core for the same size of the clusters and a high linear correlation with the energy difference between two singly occupied molecular orbitals. Clearly, the FM and AFM couplings as well as their switching behavior in such NV defect diamond nanoclusters featuring the endohedral σ-diradicals are a novel type of promising magnetic material motifs. These findings open up promising spintronic application prospects of the NV diamonds and provide helpful information for the design of inorganic magnetic materials and logic devices.

Unexpected diradical character and large magnetic spin coupling in modified porphyrins induced by inverting pyrrole rings

Porphyrin derivatives with inverted pyrrole rings have been experimentally synthesized, and their relevant electronic and magnetic properties have great application prospects in terms of electronic devices. In this work, we rationally design the structures and computationally investigate the electronic properties of porphine and Mg/Zn-porphyrin derivatives with two inverted pyrrole rings, i.e. the dipyrrole-inverted porphine and Mg/Zn-porphyrin analogues (1NN-2H, 2NN-2H, 1NN-Mg, 2NN-Mg, 1NN-Zn and 2NN-Zn), at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level. The main structural characters of these porphyrin derivatives are that the [double bond splayed left]NH units of two pyrrole rings are inverted outwards and the porphyrin-like macrocycles are distorted from square to diamond shapes. More interestingly, these dipyrrole-inverted porphyrin derivatives present diradical characters with noticeably large antiferromagnetic spin coupling constants, i.e.-982.2/-936.3 cm^-1 for 1NN-2H/2NN-2H, -796.3/-764.2 cm^-1 for 1NN-Mg/2NN-Mg and -1044.5/-1055.2 cm^-1 for 1NN-Zn/2NN-Zn, but their monopyrrole-inverted counterparts do not. Examinations of the orbital properties featuring large occupation numbers of the lowest unoccupied natural orbitals and two singly occupied molecular orbitals that are polarized in opposite directions also confirm these findings. These porphyrin derivatives have small singlet-triplet energy gaps and small energy gaps between the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the closed-shell singlet states. These are conducive to the emergence of diradical character and large spin coupling constants. Furthermore, the spin-alternation analyses show that each dipyrrole-inverted porphyrin derivative has two resonant structures featuring two spin-opposite single electrons, in agreement with the observed antiferromagnetic spin couplings. This work provides novel insights into the electronic structures and properties of the porphyrin derivatives with modified structures and also provides helpful information for the rational design, synthesis and characterization of new porphyrin-based magnets.

Magnetism-tuning strategies for graphene oxide based on magnetic oligoacene oxide patches model

Graphene oxide (GO) has wide application potential owing to its 2D structure and diverse modification sites for various targeted uses. The introduction of magnetism into GO structures has further advanced the controllability of the application of GO materials. Herein, the concept of modular design and modeling was applied to tune the magnetism of GO. To obtain desirable magnetic properties, diradical-structured GO patches were formed by the introduction of two functional groups to break the Kekule structure of the benzene ring. In these diradical GO patches, the energy of the triplet state was lower than those of the open-shell broken-symmetry singlet state and closed-shell singlet state. To create such multi-radical patches, a practical approach is to determine a substantial spatial separation of the α and β spin densities in the molecule. Thus, systematic design strategies and tests were evaluated. The first strategy was extending the distance between the distribution center of the α and β spin densities; the second was controlling the delocalization directions of the α and β electrons; the third was controlling the delocalization extension of the α and β electrons by oxidative modification, and finally introducing multi-radical structures into the molecular system and controlling the position of each radical. Herein, successful molecular models with a large magnetic coupling constant (∼3600 cm^-1) were obtained. This study paves the way to explore ferromagnetic MGO guided by theoretical study, which may become reality soon.
