Borylated Arylamine–Benzothiadiazole Donor–Acceptor Materials as Low-LUMO, Low-Band-Gap Chromophores

Regioselective electrophilic aromatic borylation as a method for synthesising sterically hindered benzothiadiazole fluorophores

Regioselective stepwise phenylation of 4,7-diarylbenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole fluorophores has been achieved through a facile one-pot, three-step synthetic strategy involving sequential borylation, hydroxydechlorination and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Crucial to the selectivity was the use of BCl₃ to regioselectively install a boronic acid group in the ortho-position of only one of the diaryl groups. The subsequent introduction of ortho-phenyl groups through Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling gave rise to twisted structures with hindered intramolecular rotation, providing a structural lever with which the fluorophore absorption and emission properties could be adjusted.

Dynamic B/N Lewis Pairs: Insights into the Structural Variations and Photochromism via Light-Induced Fluorescence to Phosphorescence Switching

Ultralong afterglow emissions due to room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of paramount importance in the advancement of smart sensors, bioimaging and light-emitting devices. We herein present an efficient approach to achieve rarely accessible phosphorescence of heavy atom-free organoboranes via photochemical switching of sterically tunable fluorescent Lewis pairs (LPs). LPs are widely applied in and well-known for their outstanding performance in catalysis and supramolecular soft materials but have not thus far been exploited to develop photo-responsive RTP materials. The intramolecular LP M1BNM not only shows a dynamic response to thermal treatment due to reversible N→B coordination but crystals of M1BNM also undergo rapid photochromic switching. As a result, unusual emission switching from short-lived fluorescence to long-lived phosphorescence (rad-M1BNM, τ_RTP =232 ms) is observed. The reported discoveries in the field of Lewis pairs chemistry offer important insights into their structural dynamics, while also pointing to new opportunities for photoactive materials with implications for fast responsive detectors.

Recent advances in the synthesis of luminescent tetra-coordinated boron compounds

Tetra-coordinated boron compounds offer a plethora of luminescent materials. Different chelation around the boron center (O,O-, N,C-, N,O-, and N,N-) has been explored to tune the electronic and photophysical properties of tetra-coordinated boron compounds. A number of fascinating molecules with interesting properties such as aggregation induced emission, mechanochromism and tunable emission by changing the solvent polarity were realised. Owing to their rich and unique properties, some of the molecules have shown applications in making optoelectronic devices, probes and so on. This perspective provides an overview of the recent developments of tetra-coordinated boron compounds and their potential applications.

Recent Advances in π-Conjugated N^C-Chelate Organoboron Materials

Boron-containing π-conjugated materials are archetypical candidates for a variety of molecular scale applications. The incorporation of boron into the π-conjugated frameworks significantly modifies the nature of the parent π-conjugated systems. Several novel boron-bridged π-conjugated materials with intriguing structural, photo-physical and electrochemical properties have been reported over the last few years. In this paper, we review the properties and multi-dimensional applications of the boron-bridged fused-ring π-conjugated systems. We critically highlight the properties of π-conjugated N^C-chelate organoboron materials. This is followed by a discussion on the potential applications of the new materials in opto-electronics (O-E) and other areas. Finally, attempts will be made to predict the future direction/outlook for this class of materials.

Intramolecular (directed) electrophilic C-H borylation

The intramolecular C-H borylation of (hetero)arenes and alkenes using electrophilic boranes is a powerful transition metal free methodology for forming C-B bonds. These C-H borylation reactions are preceded by intermolecular bond (both dative and covalent) formation, with examples proceeding via initial C-B and N-B bond formation dominating this field thus both are discussed in depth herein. Less prevalent intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation reactions that proceed by intermolecular O-B, S-B and P-B bond formation are also summarised. Mechanistic studies are presented that reveal two mechanisms for C-H borylation, (i) electrophilic aromatic substitution (prevalent with B-X electrophiles); (ii) σ-bond metathesis mediated (prevalent with B-H and B-R electrophiles). To date, intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation is utilised mainly for accessing boron containing conjugated organic materials, however recent developments, summarized herein alongside early studies, have highlighted the applicability of this methodology for forming synthetically versatile organo-boronate esters and boron containing bioactives. The multitude of synthetic procedures reported for intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation contain many common features and this enables key requirements for successful C-H borylation and the factors effecting regioselectivity and substrate scope to be identified, discussed and summarized.

Conjugated Polymers Containing Building Blocks 1,3,4,6-Tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2,5-dione (isoDPP), Benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) or Naphthodipyrrolidone (NDP): A Review

π-Conjugated organic donor-acceptor (D-A) type polymers are widely developed and used in electronic device. Among which, diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based polymers have received the most attention due to their high performances. The novel chromophores named 1,3,4,6-tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2,5-dione (isoDPP), benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) and naphthodipyrrolidone (NDP) are resemble DPP in chemical structure. IsoDPP is an isomer of DPP, with the switching position of carbonyl and amide units. The cores of BDP and NDP are tri- and tetracyclic, whereas isoDPP is bicyclic. π-Conjugation extension could result polymers with distinct optical, electrochemical and device performance. It is expected that the polymers containing these high-performance electron-deficient pigments are potential in the electronic device applications, and have the potential to be better than the DPP-based ones. IsoDPP, BDP, and NDP based polymers are synthesized since 2011, and have not receive desirable attention. In this work, the synthesis, properties (optical and electrochemical characteristics), electronic device as well as their relationship depending on core-extension or structure subtle optimization have been reviewed. The final goal is to outline a theoretical scaffold for the design the D-A type conjugated polymers, which is potential for high-performance electronic devices.

A BN anthracene mimics the electronic structure of more highly conjugated systems

9a,9-BN anthracene was synthesized using a simple three-step sequence involving intramolecular electrophilic borylation of 2-benzylpyridines. The same procedure can be applied to yield a number of substituted 9a,9-BN anthracenes. Spectroscopic characterization of the parental compound (UV-photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption/emission) shows an electronic structure more similar to that of a larger conjugated system rather than anthracene, the direct all-carbon analogue.

Expansion of the scope of alkylboryl-bridged N → B-ladder boranes: new substituents and alternative substrates

A series of new boranes capable of forming intramolecular N → B-heterocycles has been prepared and their properties have been studied by electrochemical methods and UV-vis-spectroscopy complemented by DFT calculations.

Highly Luminescent Ladderized Fluorene Copolymers Based on B-N Lewis Pair Functionalization

A new B-N functionalized polyaromatic building block for conjugated hybrid polymers is developed. Bromine-functionalized dipyridylfluorene is first subjected to Lewis-base-directed electrophilic borylation and subsequently incorporated into conjugated polymers via transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The borane monomer exhibits bright blue luminescence in solution, as a result of the rigid ladder-type structure generated upon electrophilic borylation. Yamamoto coupling gives rise to a homopolymer and Stille coupling to a vinylene-bridged copolymer. Polymerization of the BN-fused ladder molecules leads to large bathochromic shifts in absorption and emission, which are most pronounced for the vinylene-bridged copolymer. The polymers display strong luminescence in solution with quantum yields of 55% and 78% and sub-ns fluorescence lifetimes; the copolymer also exhibits bright yellow luminescence in the solid state when precipitated from solution.

A modular synthetic approach for band-gap engineering of armchair graphene nanoribbons

Despite the great promise of armchair graphene nanoribbons (aGNRs) as high-performance semiconductors, practical band-gap engineering of aGNRs remains an unmet challenge. Given that width and edge structures are the two key factors for modulating band-gaps of aGNRs, a reliable synthetic method that allows control of both factors would be highly desirable. Here we report a simple modular strategy for efficient preparation of N = 6 aGNR, the narrowest member in the N = 3p (p: natural number) aGNR family, and two unsymmetrically edge-functionalized GNRs that contain benzothiadiazole and benzotriazole moieties. The trend of band-gap transitions among these GNRs parallels those in donor–acceptor alternating conjugated polymers. In addition, post-functionalization of the unsymmetrical heterocyclic edge via C–H borylation permits further band-gap tuning. Therefore, this method opens the door for convenient band-gap engineering of aGNRs through modifying the heteroarenes on the edge.

Effective band-gap engineering of armchair graphene nanoribbons calls for control over both width and edge structure. Here, the authors report a modular synthesis of narrow N = 6 armchair graphene nanoribbons whose edges can be unsymmetrically modified with heteroarenes, introducing a simple way to tune band gap.
