Boron Complexes with Propiolamidinato Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties

Two series of boron derivatives with propiolamidinato ligands, [BPh2{C(C≡CAr)(NR)2}] (Ar = Ph, p-MeOPh, p-FPh, p-Me2NPh, or phen; R = iPr or p-tolyl), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The corresponding propiolamidine (or propargylamidine) proligands have been obtained through sustainable methods. One is the catalytic hydroalkynylation of diisopropylcarbodiimide with different terminal alkynes, using simple ZnEt2 as a precatalyst. Alternatively, to obtain propiolamidines with aromatic groups on the nitrogen atoms, the formation of lithiated derivatives of terminal alkynes by reaction with n-BuLi in air and at room temperature, and subsequent addition to the di-p-tolylcarbodiimide, under the same conditions and using 2-MeTHF as a sustainable solvent, has been used for the first time. After reaction with BPh3, the corresponding boron amidinates were obtained, which are emissive in the solution state. The influence of the different substituents introduced into the ligands on the photophysical properties of the boron compounds has been studied. One of the obtained compounds can be used as a ratiometric fluorescent pH sensor in the acidic range.

Homogeneous Group IVB Catalysts of New Generations for Synthesis of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Rubbers: A Mini-Review

Ethylene-propylene-diene rubbers (EPDM) are one of the most important polyolefin materials widely commercialized and used in various industries in recent years. The production of EPDM is based solely on catalytic coordination polymerization processes. The development of new catalysts and processes for the synthesis of EPDM has expanded the range of products and their manufacturing in terms of energy efficiency, processability, and environmental safety. This mini-review mainly analyzes patented data on the synthesis of EPDM on new-generation single-site catalytic systems based on Group IVB complexes including the systems commercialized by major manufacturers of EPDM. The advantages of these systems are evident in comparison with conventional vanadium systems introduced into production in the 1960s and used to date in the industrial synthesis of EPDM.

Molecular and supported Ti(iii)-alkyls: efficient ethylene polymerization driven by the π-character of metal-carbon bonds and back donation from a singly occupied molecular orbital

While Ti(iii) alkyl species are the proposed active sites in Ziegler–Natta ethylene polymerization catalysts, the corresponding well-defined homogeneous catalysts are not known. We report that well-defined neutral β-diiminato Ti(iii) alkyl species, namely [Ti(nacnac)(CH₂^tBu)₂] and its alumina-grafted derivative [(Al_sO)Ti(nacnac)(CH₂^tBu)], are active towards ethylene polymerization at moderate pressures and temperatures and possess an electron configuration well-adapted to insertion of ethylene. Advanced EPR spectroscopy showed that ethylene insertion into a Ti(iii)–C bond takes place during polymerization from Ti(nacnac)(CH₂^tBu)₂. A combination of pulsed EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, based on a crystal structure of [Ti(nacnac)(CH₂^tBu)₂], enabled us to reveal details about the structure and electronic configurations of both molecular and surface-grafted species. For both compounds, the α-agostic C–H interaction, which involves the singly occupied molecular orbital, indicates a π character of the metal–carbon bond; this π character is enhanced upon ethylene coordination, leading to a nearly barrier-less C₂H₄ insertion into Ti(iii)–C bonds after this first step. During coordination, back donation from the SOMO to the π*(C₂H₄) occurs, leading to stabilization of π-ethylene complexes and to a significant lowering of the overall energy of the C₂H₄ insertion transition state. In d¹ alkyl complexes, ethylene insertion follows an original “augmented” Cossee–Arlman mechanism that involves the delocalization of unpaired electrons between the SOMO, π*(C₂H₄) and σ*(Ti–C) in the transition state, which further favors ethylene insertion. All these factors facilitate ethylene polymerization on Ti(iii) neutral alkyl species and make d¹ alkyl complexes potentially more effective polymerization catalysts than their d⁰ analogues.

Ti(iii) alkyl species polymerize ethylene via an original mechanism, which involves back donation to the π*(C₂H₄) and a delocalization of the unpaired electron in the transition state of C₂H₄ insertion into the partially alkylidenic Ti(iii)–C bond.

Are cucurbiturils better drug carriers for bent metallocenes? Insights from theory

Bent metallocenes (BM) have anti-tumor properties but they face a serious drug efficacy problem due to poor aqueous solubility and rapid hydrolysis under physiological conditions. These two problems can be fixed by encapsulating them in host molecules such as cyclodextrin (CD), cucurbituril (CB) etc. Experimentally, CD-BM, CB-BM host-guest complexes have been investigated to check the efficiency of the drug delivery and efficiency of the encapsulated drug. CB has been reported to be a better host than CD but the reasons for this has not been figured out. This can be done by finding out the mechanism of binding and the nature of the binding forces in both the inclusion complexes. This is exactly done here by performing a DFT study at BP86/TZP level on CB-BM host-guest systems. For comparison CD-BM with β-cyclodextrin as host have been studied. Four BMs (Cp₂MCl₂, M=Ti, V, Nb, Mo) and their corresponding cations (Cp₂MCl⁺, Cp₂M²⁺) are chosen as guests and they are encapsulated into cucurbit-[6]-uril (CB[6]) and cucurbit-[7]-uril(CB[7]) host systems. Computations reveal that CB[7] accommodates well the BMs over CB[6] due to their larger cavity size and also CB[7] is found to be a better host than β-cyclodextrin. BMs enter vertically rather than horizontally into the CB cavity. The reversible binding of BMs within CB[7] is controlled by various non-bonding interactions and mainly by hydrogen bonding between the portal oxygen atoms and Cp protons as revealed by QTAIM analysis. On the other hand, the interaction between the wall nitrogen atoms in CB[7] and chlorine atoms attached to the metal in BM strengthens the M-Cl bonds that prevents rapid hydrolysis of M-Cl and M-Cp bonds saving the drug. Comparatively, BMs experience less electrostatic attraction and more Pauli repulsion within β-cyclodextrin cavity and this affects the drug binding with CD. This makes β-cyclodextrin a less suitable drug carrier for BMs than CBs. Among the four BMs, niobocene binds strongly and titanocene binds weakly with CBs. EDA clearly shows that all the interactions between the guest and host are non-covalent in nature and electrostatic interactions outperform high-repulsion resulting in stable complexes. Cations form stronger complexes than neutral BMs. FMO analysis reveals that neutral BMs are less reactive compared to their cations and complexes are more reactive in CB[6] environment due to excess strain. QTAIM analysis helps to bring out the newer insights in these types of host-guest systems.

The methods for catalytic intramolecular alkene hydroamination and degradation of amidines have been established. Furthermore, a tandem reconstruction/cyclization of amidines has also been developed.

Ethylene/propylene copolymerization catalyzed by half-titanocenes containing monodentate anionic nitrogen ligands: effect of ligands on catalytic behaviour and structure of copolymers

Ethylene–propylene copolymers with high molecular weight, nearly random sequence distribution and high propylene content could be synthesized by a novel T6/TIBA/MMAO catalytic system.
