Abstract
Our study unveils a novel approach to accessing boryl radicals through the spontaneous homolytic cleavage of B-B bonds. We synthesized a hexaaryl-substituted diboron(6) dianion, 1, via the reductive B-B coupling of 9-borafluorene. Intriguingly, compound 1 exhibits the ability to undergo homolytic B-B bond cleavage, leading to the formation of boryl radical anions, as confirmed by EPR studies, in the presence of the 2.2.2-cryptand at room temperature. Moreover, it directly reacts with diphenylacetylene, producing an unprecedented 1,6-diborylated allene species, where the phenyl ring is dearomatized. Density functional theory computational studies suggest that homolytic B-B bond cleavage is favored in the reaction path, and the formation of the boryl radical anion is crucial for dearomatization. Additionally, it achieves the dearomative diborylation of anthracene and the activation of elemental sulfur/selenium under mild conditions. The borylation products have been successfully characterized by NMR spectra, HRMS, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction.

Abstract
The activation of dinitrogen is significant as nitrogen-containing compounds play an important role in industries. However, the inert NN triple bond caused by its large HOMO-LUMO gap (10.8 eV) and high bond dissociation energy (945 kJ mol-1 ) renders its activation under mild conditions particularly challenging. Recent progress shows that a few main group species can mimic transition metal complexes to activate dinitrogen. Here, we demonstrate that a series of seven-electron (7e) boron-centered radical can be used to activate N2 via density functional theory calculations. It is found that boron-centered radicals containing amine ligand perform best on the thermodynamics of dinitrogen activation. In addition, when electron-donating groups are introduced at the boron atom, these radicals can be used to activate N2 with low reaction barriers. Further analysis suggests that the electron transfer from the boron atom to the π* orbitals of dinitrogen is essential for its activation. Our findings suggest great potential of 7e boron radicals in the field of dinitrogen activation.

Abstract
Heteroatom-centered diradical(oid)s have been in the focus of molecular main group chemistry for nearly 30 years. During this time, the diradical concept has evolved and the focus has shifted to the rational design of diradical(oid)s for specific applications. This review article begins with some important theoretical considerations of the diradical and tetraradical concept. Based on these theoretical considerations, the design of diradical(oid)s in terms of ligand choice, steric, symmetry, electronic situation, element choice, and reactivity is highlighted with examples. In particular, heteroatom-centered diradical reactions are discussed and compared with closed-shell reactions such as pericyclic additions. The comparison between closed-shell reactivity, which proceeds in a concerted manner, and open-shell reactivity, which proceeds in a stepwise fashion, along with considerations of diradical(oid) design, provides a rational understanding of this interesting and unusual class of compounds. The application of diradical(oid)s, for example in small molecule activation or as molecular switches, is also highlighted. The final part of this review begins with application-related details of the spectroscopy of diradical(oid)s, followed by an update of the heteroatom-centered diradical(oid)s and tetraradical(oid)s published in the last 10 years since 2013.

Abstract
One- and two-electron oxidation of a digallene stabilized by an N-heterocyclic carbene afforded the first stable gallium-based radical cation and dication salts, respectively. Structural analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the oxidation occurs at the Ga=Ga double bond, leading to removal of π electrons of the double bond and a decrease of the bond order. The spin density of the radical cation mainly locates at the two gallium centers as demonstrated by EPR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Moreover, the reactivity of the radical cation salt toward nBu3 SnH and cyclo-S8 was studied; a digallium-hydride cation salt containing a Ga-Ga single bond and a gallium sulfide cluster bearing an unprecedented ladder-like Ga4 S4 core structure were obtained, respectively.

Abstract
N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs), relatives of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), exhibit high nucleophilicity and soft Lewis basic character. To investigate their π-electron donating ability, NHOs were attached to triarylborane π-acceptors (A) giving donor (D)-π-A compounds 1-3. In addition, an enamine π-donor analogue (4) was synthesized for comparison. UV-visible absorption studies show a larger red shift for the NHO-containing boranes than for the enamine analogue, a relative of cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbenes (CAACs). Solvent-dependent emission studies indicate that 1-4 have moderate intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) behavior. Electrochemical investigations reveal that the NHO-containing boranes have extremely low reversible oxidation potentials (e.g., for 3, E ox 1 / 2 =-0.40 V vs. ferrocene/ferrocenium, Fc/Fc+ , in THF). Time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations show that the HOMOs of 1-3 are much more destabilized than that of the enamine-containing 4, which confirms the stronger donating ability of NHOs.

Abstract
Two novel boron-centered diradicals based on dimesitylpyridine borane (1) were synthesized by the self-assembling of the corresponding radical sodium and potassium salts, respectively. The sodium diradical was obtained by re-dissolving the crystals of the radical salt 1Na in toluene, while the potassium diradical was directly obtained by the reduction of 1 with potassium in THF. The diradicals could be converted back to their radical anions in THF solution, forming a reversible process. EPR spectroscopy and SQUID measurements, together with theoretical calculations, show that the diradicals have singlet ground states with excited triplet states. Their singlet-triplet energy gaps are tunable with metals.

Abstract
Although boron-containing radicals are promising materials for molecular electronic devices, the electronic effect of the σ-donating yet π-accepting boron center on the stability of open-shell species has been less discussed. In this work, the role of a tricoordinate boron center in π-conjugated radicals was explored through electron paramagnetic resonance measurement of several boron-linked bisphenol radicals and diradicals. Replacing the bridging methine fragment of a neutral Galvinoxyl radical with an arylboryl group led to the corresponding boron-linked radical anion that requires excessive steric protection at the boron center to be persistent in solution. Experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the introduction of boron would diminish the quinoidal character of the phenoxyl radical and increase both the electrophilicity and nucleophilicity of the open-shell species. Therefore, it is important to consider the steric protection of the boron center in boron-containing π-conjugated organic radicals.

Abstract
Complex Fe(bpyB)3 (1, bpyB = 5,5'-bis(dimesitylboranyl)-2,2'-bipyridine) and its reduced species [(18-c-6)K(THF)2]·[Fe(bpyB)3] (2) were synthesized. Their solid state and electronic structures were investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallography, electron paramagnetic resonance and UV-vis spectroscopy, and SQUID measurements. In 1 two bpyB radical anions are fused by a diamagnetic FeII ion, whereas in 2 all three bpyB ligands are in the radical state. Complex 1 possesses an open-shell singlet ground state with a singlet-triplet gap of 0.18 kcal mol-1 and 2 features an open-shell doublet ground state with a doublet-quartet gap of 1.4 kcal mol-1, as determined by SQUID measurements. The unpaired-electrons in 1 and 2 mainly delocalize over the boron atoms and the bipyrdine moieties with negligible spin density at the iron center. Complex 2 represents the first isolable example of boron-based triradicals.

Abstract
Boron-linked tetraaminoethylene radical cations has been isolated.
Single-electron oxidation of neutral boryl-linked tetraaminoethylene derivatives 4 led to the formation of radical cations 4˙+, which have been isolated and fully characterized. X-ray diffraction analysis, EPR spectroscopy, and computational studies revealed that the unpaired electron is delocalized over the B2N4C2 skeleton and the spin density mainly resides on the carbon and boron atoms.
