Phosphorescent κ3 -(N^C^C)-Gold(III) Complexes: Synthesis, Photophysics, Computational Studies and Application to Solution-Processable OLEDs

Efficient OLED devices have been fabricated using organometallic complexes of platinum group metals. Still, the high material cost and low stability represent central challenges for their application in commercial display technologies. Based on its innate stability, gold(III) complexes are emerging as promising candidates for high-performance OLEDs. Here, a series of alkynyl-, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)- and aryl-gold(III) complexes stabilized by a κ³ -(N^C^C) template have been prepared and their photophysical properties have been characterized in detail. These compounds exhibit good photoluminescence quantum efficiency (η_PL ) of up to 33 %. The PL emission can be tuned from sky-blue to yellowish green colors by variations on both the ancillary ligands as well as on the pincer template. Further, solution-processable OLED devices based on some of these complexes display remarkable emissive properties (η_CE 46.6 cd.A^-1 and η_ext 14.0 %), thus showcasing the potential of these motifs for the low-cost fabrication of display and illumination technologies.

Synthesis, structure and reactivity of NO+, NO˙ and NO- pincer PCN-Rh complexes

Synthesis of a pincer-type linear nitrosyl complex [Rh(P^tBu₂CN^Et₂)(NO)]⁺ (3⁺) is described. The product and all intermediates involved were fully characterized by FTIR, NMR, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray crystallography. Attempts at obtaining (3⁺) from its chlorinated precursor Rh(PCN)(NO)Cl (2) revealed that a relative stabilization of this complex ion is introduced by the BArF^- counteranion, as other counteranions-PF₆^-, BF₄^- and triflate-proved to coordinate to the metal center. Redox reactivity both of (3⁺) and of that of its five-coordinate derivatives (2) and [Rh(PCN)(NO)(CH₃CN)]⁺ (4⁺) was found to distinguish itself from analogous PCP complexes due to a relative stabilization of higher oxidation states. Oxidation of these three complexes was studied by FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. Reduction of complex (3⁺) to yield a short-lived {RhNO}⁹ species [Rh(PCN)(NO)]˙ (3˙) was also carried out. Complex (3˙) was proved able to activate carbon-halogen bonds in aryl halides, in much a similar way as that of its PCP analogue. Complex (3⁺) was also seen to establish a linear ↔ bent nitrosyl equilibrium upon addition of CO which could not be fully displaced with excess CO.

Coordinating Ability of Anions, Solvents, Amino Acids, and Gases towards Alkaline and Alkaline-Earth Elements, Transition Metals, and Lanthanides

After briefly reviewing the applications of the coordination ability indices proposed earlier for anions and solvents toward transition metals and lanthanides, a new analysis of crystal structures is applied now to a much larger number of coordinating species: anions (including those that are present in ionic solvents), solvents, amino acids, gases, and a sample of neutral ligands. The coordinating ability towards s-block elements is now also considered. The effect of several factors on the coordinating ability will be discussed: (a) the charge of an anion, (b) the chelating nature of anions and solvents, (c) the degree of protonation of oxo-anions, carboxylates and amino carboxylates, and (d) the substitution of hydrogen atoms by methyl groups in NH₃ , ethylenediamine, benzene, ethylene, pyridine and aldehydes. Hit parades of solvents and anions most commonly used in the areas of transition metal, s-block and lanthanide chemistry are deduced from the statistics of their presence in crystal structures.
