Solvent-Controlled CO2 Reduction by a Triphos–Iron Hydride Complex

Sequential Deoxygenation of CO2 and NO2- via Redox-Control of a Pyridinediimine Ligand with a Hemilabile Phosphine

The deoxygenation of environmental pollutants CO2 and NO2- to form value-added products is reported. CO2 reduction with subsequent CO release and NO2- conversion to NO are achieved via the starting complex Fe(PPhPDI)Cl2 (1). 1 contains the redox-active pyridinediimine (PDI) ligand with a hemilabile phosphine located in the secondary coordination sphere. 1 was reduced with SmI2 under a CO2 atmosphere to form the direduced monocarbonyl Fe(PPhPDI)(CO) (2). Subsequent CO release was achieved via oxidation of 2 using the NOx- source, NO2-. The resulting [Fe(PPhPDI)(NO)]+ (3) mononitrosyl iron complex (MNIC) is formed as the exclusive reduction product due to the hemilabile phosphine. 3 was investigated computationally to be characterized as {FeNO}7, an unusual intermediate-spin Fe(III) coupled to triplet NO- and a singly reduced PDI ligand.

Substrate-Gated Transformation of a Pre-Catalyst into an Iron-Hydride Intermediate [(NO)2(CO)Fe(μ-H)Fe(CO)(NO)2]- for Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Dimethylamine Borane

Continued efforts are made on the development of earth-abundant metal catalysts for dehydrogenation/hydrolysis of amine boranes. In this study, complex [K-18-crown-6-ether][(NO)₂Fe(μ-^MePyr)(μ-CO)Fe(NO)₂] (3-K-crown, ^MePyr = 3-methylpyrazolate) was explored as a pre-catalyst for the dehydrogenation of dimethylamine borane (DMAB). Upon evolution of H_2(g) from DMAB triggered by 3-K-crown, parallel conversion of 3-K-crown into [(NO)₂Fe(N,N'-^MePyrBH₂NMe₂)]^- (5) and an iron-hydride intermediate [(NO)₂(CO)Fe(μ-H)Fe(CO)(NO)₂]^- (A) was evidenced by X-ray diffraction/nuclear magnetic resonance/infrared/nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy experiments and supported by density functional theory calculations. Subsequent transformation of A into complex [(NO)₂Fe(μ-CO)₂Fe(NO)₂]^- (6) is synchronized with the deactivated generation of H_2(g). Through reaction of complex [Na-18-crown-6-ether][(NO)₂Fe(η²-BH₄)] (4-Na-crown) with CO_(g) as an alternative synthetic route, isolated intermediate [Na-18-crown-6-ether][(NO)₂(CO)Fe(μ-H)Fe(CO)(NO)₂] (A-Na-crown) featuring catalytic reactivity toward dehydrogenation of DMAB supports a substrate-gated transformation of a pre-catalyst [(NO)₂Fe(μ-^MePyr)(μ-CO)Fe(NO)₂]^- (3) into the iron-hydride species A as an intermediate during the generation of H_2(g).

Mechanistic Insights Into Iron(II) Bis(pyridyl)amine-Bipyridine Skeleton for Selective CO2 Photoreduction

A bis(pyridyl)amine-bipyridine-iron(II) framework (Fe(BPAbipy)) of complexes 1-3 is reported to shed light on the multistep nature of CO₂ reduction. Herein, photocatalytic conversion of CO₂ to CO even at low CO₂ concentration (1 %), together with detailed mechanistic study and DFT calculations, reveal that 1 first undergoes two sequential one-electron transfer affording an intermediate with electron density on both Fe and ligand for CO₂ binding over proton. The following 2 H⁺ -assisted Fe-CO formation is rate-determining for selective CO₂ -to-CO reduction. A pendant, proton-shuttling α-OH group (2) initiates PCET for predominant H₂ evolution, while an α-OMe group (3) cancels the selectivity control for either CO or H₂ . The near-unity selectivity of 1 and 2 enables self-sorting syngas production at flexible CO/H₂ ratios. The unprecedented results from one kind of molecular catalyst skeleton encourage insight into the beauty of advanced multi-electron and multi-proton transfer processes for robust CO₂ RR by photocatalysis.

Effect of Micropores of a Porous Coordination Polymer on the Product Selectivity in RuII Complex-catalyzed CO2 Reduction

To develop an efficient CO2 reduction catalyst, hybridizing a molecular catalyst and a porous coordination polymer (PCP) is a promising strategy because it can combine both advantages of the precise reactivity control of the former and the CO2 adsorption property of the latter. Although several PCP hybrid catalysts have been reported to date, the CO2 sorption behavior and the CO2 reduction reactivity have been investigated separately, and the CO2 enrichment during the catalysis is still unclear. We report CO2 photoreduction under different temperatures and pressures using a PCP-RuII complex hybrid catalyst. The product selectivity (CO or HCOOH) varied depending on the reaction conditions. The altered selectivity could be interpreted in terms of the CO2 capture in the micropores of a PCP.

Electrochemically Catalyzed Newman-Kwart Rearrangement: Mechanism, Structure-Reactivity Relationship, and Parallels to Photoredox Catalysis

The facilitation of redox-neutral reactions by electrochemical injection of holes and electrons, also known as "electrochemical catalysis", is a little explored approach that has the potential to expand the scope of electrosynthesis immensely. To systematically improve existing protocols and to pave the way toward new developments, a better understanding of the underlying principles is crucial. In this context, we have studied the Newman-Kwart rearrangement of O-arylthiocarbamates to the corresponding S-aryl derivatives, the key step in the synthesis of thiophenols from the corresponding phenols. This transformation is a particularly useful example because the conventional method requires temperatures up to 300 °C, whereas electrochemical catalysis facilitates the reaction at room temperature. A combined experimental-quantum chemical approach revealed several reaction channels and rendered an explanation for the relationship between the structure and reactivity. Furthermore, it is shown how rapid cyclic voltammetry measurements can serve as a tool to predict the feasibility for specific substrates. The study also revealed distinct parallels to photoredox-catalyzed reactions, in which back-electron transfer and chain propagation are competing pathways.

General and selective synthesis of primary amines using Ni-based homogeneous catalysts

The development of base metal catalysts for industrially relevant amination and hydrogenation reactions by applying abundant and atom economical reagents continues to be important for the cost-effective and sustainable synthesis of amines which represent highly essential chemicals. In particular, the synthesis of primary amines is of central importance because these compounds serve as key precursors and central intermediates to produce value-added fine and bulk chemicals as well as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials. Here we report a Ni-triphos complex as the first Ni-based homogeneous catalyst for both reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with ammonia and hydrogenation of nitroarenes to prepare all kinds of primary amines. Remarkably, this Ni-complex enabled the synthesis of functionalized and structurally diverse benzylic, heterocyclic and aliphatic linear and branched primary amines as well as aromatic primary amines starting from inexpensive and easily accessible carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) and nitroarenes using ammonia and molecular hydrogen. This Ni-catalyzed reductive amination methodology has been applied for the amination of more complex pharmaceuticals and steroid derivatives. Detailed DFT computations have been performed for the Ni-triphos based reductive amination reaction, and they revealed that the overall reaction has an inner-sphere mechanism with H₂ metathesis as the rate-determining step.

A Ni-triphos based homogeneous catalyst enabled the synthesis of all kinds of primary amines by reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with ammonia and hydrogenation of nitroarenes.
