Abstract
Parahydrogen induced polarization (PHIP) can address the low sensitivity problem intrinsic to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Using a catalyst capable of reacting with parahydrogen and substrate in either a hydrogenative or nonhydrogenative manner can result in signal enhancement of the substrate. This work describes the development of a rare example of an iron catalyst capable of reacting with parahydrogen to hyperpolarize olefins. Complexes of the form (MesCCC)Fe(H)(L)(N2) (L = Py (Py = pyridine), PMe3, PPh3) were synthesized from the reaction of the parent complexes (MesCCC)FeMes(L) (Mes = mesityl) with H2. The isolated low-spin iron(II) hydride compounds were characterized via multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. (MesCCC)Fe(H)(Py)(N2) is competent in the hydrogenation of olefins and demonstrated high activity toward the hydrogenation of monosubstituted terminal olefins. Reactions with p-H2 resulted in the first PHIP effect mediated by iron which requires diamagnetism throughout the reaction sequence. This work represents the development of a new PHIP catalyst featuring iron, unlocking potential to develop more PHIP catalysts based on first-row transition metals.

Abstract
Agostic interactions were observed in the bound mesityl group in a series of iron compounds bearing a bis(NHC) pincer CCC ligand. The L-type ligand on [(CCC)FeIIMes(L)] complexes influences the strength of the agostic interaction and is manifested in the upfield shift of the 1H NMR resonance for the mesityl methyl resonances. The nature of the interaction was further investigated by density functional theory calculations, allowing rationalization of some unexpected trends and proving to be a powerful predictive tool.

Abstract
![]()
Herein
we explore the intrinsic organometallic reactivity of iron
embedded in a tetradentate N3C macrocyclic ligand scaffold
that allows the stabilization of aryl-Fe species, which are key intermediates
in Fe-catalyzed cross-coupling and C–H functionalization processes.
This study covers C–H activation reactions using MeLH and FeCl2, biaryl C–C coupling product formation through reaction
with Grignard reagents, and cross-coupling reactions using MeLBr or HLBr in combination
with Fe0(CO)5. Synthesis under light irradiation
and moderate heating (50 °C) affords the aryl-FeII complexes [FeII(Br)(MeL)(CO)] (1Me) and [FeII(HL)(CO)2]Br (1H). Exhaustive spectroscopic characterization
of these rare low-spin diamagnetic species, including their crystal
structures, allowed the investigation of their intrinsic reactivity.

Abstract
Recent experimental evidence suggests that the FeMoco of nitrogenase undergoes structural rearrangement during N2 reduction, which may result in the generation of coordinatively unsaturated iron sites with two sulfur donors and a carbon donor. In an effort to synthesize and study small-molecule model complexes with a one-carbon/two-sulfur coordination environment, we have designed two new SCS pincer ligands containing a central NHC donor accompanied by thioether- or thiolate-functionalized aryl groups. Metalation of the thioether ligand with Fe(OTf)2 gives 6-coordinate complexes in which the SCS ligand binds meridionally. In contrast, metalation of the thiolate ligand with Fe(HMDS)2 gives a four-coordinate pseudotetrahedral amide complex in which the ligand binds facially, illustrating the potential structural flexibility of these ligands. Reaction of the amide complex with a bulky monothiol gives a four-coordinate complex with a one-carbon/three-sulfur coordination environment that resembles the resting state of nitrogenase. Reaction of the amide complex with phenylhydrazine gives a product with a rare κ1-bound phenylhydrazido group which undergoes N-N cleavage to give a phenylamido complex.
