Synthesis, Characterization, and Photochromic Studies of Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes Containing a Spironaphthoxazine Moiety

Ligand effect of cyclometallated iridium(iii) complexes on N-alkylation of amines in hydrogen borrowing reactions

Dinuclear iridium complexes with the general formula (C^N)2Ir(μ-Cl)2Ir(C^N)2 (C^N = bidentate ligand with carbon and nitrogen donor atoms) were prepared and used in catalytic systems for N-alkylation of amines through the hydrogen borrowing pathway. Triphenylphosphine derivatives were used as auxiliary in catalytic systems to provide excellent conversion of amines to N-alkylation products in yields ranging from 57% to 100%. The catalytic ability of the catalyst depends on the structure of its coordination ligands, including bidentate ligands (C^N) and triphenylphosphine derivatives. These catalytic systems adopt an environmentally friendly and sustainable reaction process through a hydrogen self-transfer strategy, using readily available alcohols as alkylating agents without the need for bases, solvents, and other additives, showing potential in the synthetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Synthesis of sulfur-containing benzo[b]pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]oxazine-3,9-diones: blue light promoted radical cyclization process

The selective and controllable construction of spio-tricyclic skeletons through visible light promoted radical cyclization still remains challenging. Herein, a general and convenient protocol for the blue light-promoted radical-mediated cascade spiro-cyclization/Michael addition of N-arylpropiolamides with thiophenols under metal-free conditions was developed. In this protocol, commercially available hydrochloric acid was employed as the cheap promoter and air as the sustainable oxidant. In addition, many functional groups tolerate the reaction conditions and produce a series of sulfur-containing benzo[b]pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]oxazine-3,9-diones.

First thermal studies on visible-light-switchable negative T-type photochromes of a nitrile-rich series

Representatives of visible-light-switchable nitrile-rich negative T-type photochromes (NRP) were synthesized. The temperature effect on the thermal relaxation of the photoinduced form of NRP was studied for the first time. It was found that regardless the temperature the reverse thermal reaction in ethanol and 1,4-dioxane proceeded according to a first-order kinetic equation, while an unusual pseudo-zero order of the dark reaction was observed in acetonitrile. Using the obtained experimental data, the activation energy as well as the activation parameters, such as entropy and enthalpy of activation, were calculated for the first time for thermal relaxation of NRP photochromes. It was also shown that an initial form of NRP photochromes bearing a tricyanofuran acceptor was more temperature resistant than the initial form of photochromes with a tricyanopyrrole acceptor.

The temperature effect on the thermal stability of both the initial and photoinduced forms of nitrile-rich T-type photochromes was studied for the first time.

Quenching of the phosphorescence of thermally reversible photochromic naphthopyran Re(i) complexes initiated by either visible or ultraviolet radiation

Re(i) complexes bearing thermally reversible photochromic naphthopyran axial ligands undergo highly efficient, reversible phosphorescence quenching actuated by either visible or UV irradiation. The photoinduced quenching of the triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (³MLCT) emission is interpreted based on changes in the relative energies of the excited states.

Synthesis and characterization of photochromic triethylene glycol-containing spiropyrans and their assembly in solution

A series of photochromic triethylene glycol (TEG)-containing spiropyrans (SPs) has been synthesized, and systematic and controlled formation of their self-assembled functional materials has been achieved.

Sterically hindered phenanthroimidazole ligands drive the structural flexibility and facile ligand exchange in cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes

A series of bis-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes with 2-arylphenanthroimidazole "antenna" ligands containing electron-donor or withdrawing substituents and a more flexible ancillary aromatic β-diketone bearing the "anchoring" carboxymethyl function has been prepared. Thorough X-ray study of the complexes revealed significant structural strains caused by bulky cyclometalated 2-arylphenanthroimidazoles resulting in dramatic distortions of the iridium octahedron and even in twist of the phenanthrene fragment. The crystal data were corroborated by gas-phase DFT calculations whereby the geometry of the complexes was distorted in the same way. While redox potentials, absorption and emission maxima of the complexes displayed expected change upon the variation of the electron-donating ability of the cyclometalated ligands, the complexes readily exchanged the bidentate ancillary ligand in the presence of a negligible amount of protons that was inspected in solution by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Moreover, after hydrolysis of the carboxymethyl group the resulting complexes readily react with the surface of titanium dioxide giving unique binuclear structures in which the deprotonated carboxy group of the coordinated β-diketonate binds the second bis-cyclometalated unit by forming a four-membered metallacycle. Though the enhanced reactivity of the complexes is contrary to the common idea of the high inertness of iridium(iii) compounds it can be seen as a consequence of the interplay between the steric hindrance induced by the ligands and the strong preference of the iridium(iii) ion for octahedral geometry. This study demonstrates that the use of bulky ligands provides access to light-harvesting iridium(iii) complexes with required extent of lability which may be promising as photocatalysts and biologically active molecules.

Responsive ruthenium complex probe for phosphorescence and time-gated luminescence detection of bisulfite

Sensitive and selective quantification of specific analytes is of great significance in analytical and environmental sciences, as well as in the food industry. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of a responsive ruthenium(ii) complex probe, Ru-azo, for phosphorescence and time-gated luminescence (TGL) detection of bisulfite, an important additive in the food industry. Upon a specific nucleophilic addition reaction between bisulfite and the azo group of Ru-azo, a new ruthenium(ii) complex, Ru-SO3, was obtained, which resulted in a remarkable increase in phosphorescence intensity, allowing the bisulfite detection to be achieved. In addition, long-lived emissions of Ru-azo (τ = 258 ns) and Ru-SO3 (τ = 261 ns) also enabled the TGL detection of bisulfite in autofluorescence-rich food samples. Through theoretical computations, the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process within the ruthenium(ii) complex was validated, which unveiled the rationality of the luminescence "off-on" response of Ru-azo to bisulfite. The probe showed advantages of good water solubility, and high sensitivity, selectivity and accuracy for responding to bisulfite, facilitating its application in phosphorescence and TGL detection of bisulfite in aqueous and food samples.
