Abstract
Nickel chloride and thiolate complexes supported by benzene-pyridine-based nonsymmetrical PCN pincer ligands, [2-(tBu2PO)-6-(2-pyrindinyl-4-R)-C6H3]NiX (R = H, CH3, CF3; X = Cl, SH, SPh), were synthesized and fully characterized. The structures of these complexes and the catalytic reactivity of the chloride complexes were investigated along with the related POCOP counterparts [2,6-(tBu2PO)2C6H3]NiX (X = Cl, SH). It was found that the composition and substitution of the pincer backbone evidently influence the structures and catalytic reactivity. The Ni-P and Ni-Cipso bond lengths in the PCN complexes are significantly shorter than those in the POCOP complex. The Ni-Cl and Ni-S bond lengths in the PCN complexes are longer than those in the POCOP complexes. An electron rich pyrindinyl ring in the PCN complexes makes the Ni-Cl bond longer. The Ni-N bond length is more sensitive to the auxiliary ligand compared with the Ni-P bond length in the PCN complexes. The PCN chloride complexes were found to be active catalysts for selective hydration of nitriles to primary amides in the presence of NaOH at 80 °C and the catalytic activity increases with the increase of electron richness of the pyridinyl ring. However, the corresponding POCOP counterpart is inactive under the same conditions.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of (tBu PBP)Ni(OAc) (5) by insertion of carbon dioxide into the Ni-C bond of (tBu PBP)NiMe (1) is presented. An unexpected CO2 cleavage process involving the formation of new B-O and Ni-CO bonds leads to the generation of a butterfly-structured tetra-nickel cluster (tBu PBOP)2 Ni4 (μ-CO)2 (6). Mechanistic investigation of this reaction indicates a reductive scission of CO2 by O-atom transfer to the boron atom via a cooperative nickel-boron mechanism. The CO2 activation reaction produces a three-coordinate (tBu P2 BO)Ni-acyl intermediate (A) that leads to a (tBu P2 BO)-NiI complex (B) via a likely radical pathway. The NiI species is trapped by treatment with the radical trap (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) to give (tBu P2 BO)NiII (η2 -TEMPO) (7). Additionally, 13 C and 1 H NMR spectroscopy analysis using 13 C-enriched CO2 provides information about the species involved in the CO2 activation process.

Abstract
The insertion of CO2 into metal alkyl bonds is a crucial elementary step in transition metal-catalyzed processes for CO2 utilization. Here, we synthesize pincer-supported palladium complexes of the type (tBuPBP)Pd(alkyl) (tBuPBP = B(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4-; alkyl = CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH3, CH2C6H5, and CH2-4-OMe-C6H4) and (tBuPBP)Pd(C6H5) and compare the rates of CO2 insertion into the palladium alkyl bonds to form metal carboxylate complexes. Although, the rate constant for CO2 insertion into (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH3) is more than double the rate constant we previously measured for insertion into the palladium methyl complex (tBuPBP)Pd(CH3), insertion into (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH2CH3) occurs approximately one order of magnitude slower than (tBuPBP)Pd(CH3). CO2 insertion into the benzyl complexes (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2C6H5) and (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2-4-OMe-C6H4) is significantly slower than any of the n-alkyl complexes, and CO2 does not insert into the palladium phenyl bond of (tBuPBP)Pd(C6H5). While (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH3) and (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH2CH3) are resistant to β-hydride elimination, we were unable to synthesize complexes with n-butyl, iso-propyl, and tert-butyl ligands due to β-hydride elimination and an unusual reductive coupling, which involves the formation of new C-B bonds. This reductive process also occurred for (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2C6H5) at elevated temperature and a related process involving the formation of a new H-B bond prevented the isolation of (tBuPBP)PdH. DFT calculations provide insight into the relative rates of CO2 insertion and indicate that steric factors are critical. Overall, this work is one of the first comparative studies of the rates of CO2 insertion into different metal alkyl bonds and provides fundamental information that may be important for the development of new catalysts for CO2 utilization.

Abstract
Aliphatic diamines [(H2N(CH2)nNHR) (a-d) n = 2: R = H (a), R = CH3 (b), R = C2H5 (c), n = 3, R = H (d) or rac-2-(aminomethyl)piperidine (e)] react with [IrH(Cl){(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2H}] in THF to afford ketoimine complexes [IrH(Cl){(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))(PPh2(o-C6H4CN(CH2)nNHR))H}] (2a-2d) or [IrH(Cl){(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))(PPh2(o-C6H4CNCH2(C5H9NH)))H}] (2e), containing a bridging N-H···O hydrogen bond and a dangling amine. Complex 2e consists of an almost equimolar mixture of two diastereomers. In protic solvents, the dangling amine in complexes 2 displaces chloride to afford cationic acyl-iminium compounds, [IrH(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))(PPh2(o-C6H4CNH(CH2)nNHR))]X (3a-3d, X = Cl) or [IrH(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))(PPh2(o-C6H4CNHCH2(C5H9NH)))]Cl (3e) and (4a-4b, X = ClO4), with new hemilabile terdentate PCNamine ligands adopting a facial disposition. Complexes 3 contain the corresponding phosphorus atom trans to hydride and the amine fragment trans to acyl, while complexes 4 contain the amine trans to hydride. 3b and 4b consist of 80:20 and 95:5 mixtures of diastereomers, respectively, while 3e contains a 65:35 mixture. In the presence of KOH, intermediate cationic acyl-iminium complexes 3 transform into neutral acyl-imine [IrH(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))(PPh2(o-C6H4CN(CH2)nNHR))] derivatives (5) with retention of the stereochemistry. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was performed on 2a, [3a]Cl, [3b]Cl, [4a]ClO4, and 5b. Complexes 2, 3, and 5 catalyze the methanolysis of ammonia-borane under air to release hydrogen. The highest activity is observed for ketoimine complexes 2.

Abstract
The insertion of carbon dioxide into metal element σ-bonds is an important elementary step in many catalytic reactions for carbon dioxide valorization. Here, the insertion of carbon dioxide into a family of group 10 alkyl complexes of the type (RPBP)M(CH3) (RPBP = B(NCH2PR2)2C6H4−; R = Cy or tBu; M = Ni or Pd) to generate κ1-acetate complexes of the form (RPBP)M{OC(O)CH3} is investigated. This involved the preparation and characterization of a number of new complexes supported by the unusual RPBP ligand, which features a central boryl donor that exerts a strong trans-influence, and the identification of a new decomposition pathway that results in C–B bond formation. In contrast to other group 10 methyl complexes supported by pincer ligands, carbon dioxide insertion into (RPBP)M(CH3) is facile and occurs at room temperature because of the high trans-influence of the boryl donor. Given the mild conditions for carbon dioxide insertion, we perform a rare kinetic study on carbon dioxide insertion into a late-transition metal alkyl species using (tBuPBP)Pd(CH3). These studies demonstrate that the Dimroth–Reichardt parameter for a solvent correlates with the rate of carbon dioxide insertion and that Lewis acids do not promote insertion. DFT calculations indicate that insertion into (tBuPBP)M(CH3) (M = Ni or Pd) proceeds via an SE2 mechanism and we compare the reaction pathway for carbon dioxide insertion into group 10 methyl complexes with insertion into group 10 hydrides. Overall, this work provides fundamental insight that will be valuable for the development of improved and new catalysts for carbon dioxide utilization. The kinetics of carbon dioxide insertion into a pincer-supported palladium methyl complex are studied. The complex inserts carbon dioxide at room temperature, and we explore both solvent and Lewis acid effects on carbon dioxide insertion.![]()

Abstract
The hexahydride complex OsH6(PiPr3)2 promotes the C-H bond activation of the 1,3-disubstituted phenyl group of the [BF4]- and [BPh4]- salts of the cations 1-(3-(isoquinolin-1-yl)phenyl)-3-methylimidazolium and 1-(3-(isoquinolin-1-yl)phenyl)-3-methylbenzimidazolium. The reactions selectively afford neutral and cationic trihydride-osmium(IV) derivatives bearing κ2-C,N- or κ2-C,C-chelating ligands, a cationic dihydride-osmium(IV) complex stabilized by a κ3-C,C,N-pincer group, and a bimetallic hexahydride formed by two trihydride-osmium(IV) fragments. The metal centers of the hexahydride are separated by a bridging ligand, composed of κ2-C,N- and κ2-C,C-chelating moieties, which allows electronic communication between the metal centers. The wide variety of obtained compounds and the high selectivity observed in their formation is a consequence of the main role of the azolium group during the activation and of the existence of significant differences in behavior between the azolium groups. The azolium role is governed by the anion of the salt, whereas the azolium behavior depends upon its imidazolium or benzimidazolium nature. While [BF4]- inhibits the azolium reactions, [BPh4]- favors the azolium participation in the activation process. In contrast to benzimidazolylidene, the imidazolylidene resulting from the deprotonation of the imidazolium substituent coordinates in an abnormal fashion to direct the phenyl C-H bond activation to the 2-position. The hydride ligands of the cationic dihydride-osmium(IV) pincer complex display intense quantum mechanical exchange coupling. Furthermore, this salt is a red phosphorescent emitter upon photoexcitation and displays a noticeable catalytic activity for the dehydrogenation of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone and of 1,2-phenylenedimethanol to 1-isobenzofuranone. The bimetallic hexahydride shows catalytic synergism between the metals, in the dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline and alcohols.

Abstract
Pincer complexes play an important role in organometallic chemistry; in particular, their use as homogeneous catalysts for organic transformations has increased dramatically in recent years. The high catalytic activity of such bis-cyclometallic complexes is associated with the easy tunability of their properties. Moreover, the phosphorus-based unsymmetrical pincers showed higher catalytic activity than the corresponding symmetrical analogues in several catalytic reactions. However, in modern literature, an increasing interest in the development of catalysts based on non-precious metals is observed. For example, nickel, which is an affordable and sustainable analogue of platinum and palladium, known for its low toxicity, has attracted increasing attention in the catalytic chemistry of transition metals in recent years. Thus, this mini-review is devoted to the recent advances in the chemistry of unsymmetrical phosphorus-based pincer nickel complexes, including the ligand design, the synthesis of nickel complexes and their catalytic applications.

Abstract
Although the catalytic carboxylation of unactivated alkyl electrophiles has reached remarkable levels of sophistication, the intermediacy of (phenanthroline)Ni(I)-alkyl species-complexes proposed in numerous Ni-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling reactions-has been subject to speculation. Herein we report the synthesis of such elusive (phenanthroline)Ni(I) species and their reactivity with CO2, allowing us to address a long-standing question related to Ni-catalyzed carboxylation reactions.
