Abstract
Herein, we report a DMAP-catalyzed [4 + 2] annulation reaction of hex-5-en-2-ynoates 1 with electron-poor alkenes 2, which affords exocyclic olefinic cyclohexenes 3 in good yields and excellent regio-, diastereo-, and E/Z selectivities. Distinguished from previous allenoate- or alkynoate-based substrates, hex-5-en-2-ynoates 1 use the β- and ε-carbons for the bond formation, presenting new and regiodivergent C4 synthons for Lewis base-catalyzed annulations.

Abstract
The trivalent phosphine-catalyzed [4+1] spiro-annulation reaction of allenyl imide and activated methylene cyclocompounds has been developed for the construction of various spiro-2-cyclopenten-1-ones. Oxindoles, 3-isochromanones, and 2-indanones are selected as 1C synthons to capture the in situ-generated bis-electrophilic α,β-unsaturated ketenyl phosphonium intermediate, affording the corresponding monospiro- and bispiro-cyclopentenones in good to excellent yields (≤91%) under mild conditions. The primary attempt at asymmetric catalysis using monophosphine (R)-SITCP provides promising enantioselectivity (45% ee). A plausible reaction mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract
Numerous eight-membered heterocycles are of significance in biological chemistry, the pharmaceutical industry, agrochemistry, and materials science. However, the assembly of eight-membered heterocycles is usually challenging due to the unfavorable enthalpic and entropic barriers of the transition states during the ring formation. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to the development of synthetic routes to eight-membered heterocycles. Despite these developments, the exploration of more strategies for the facile and effective assembly of eight-membered heterocyclic molecules in a single vessel under mild conditions is still highly desirable. The conjugated heterodiene-participating [4 + 4] annulation serves as a convenient and robust strategy for the synthesis of eight-membered heterocycles from easily accessible starting materials. In recent years, great progress has been achieved in this attractive field. In this short review, we highlighted the recent advances in the synthesis of eight-membered heterocycles via cascade reactions based on [4 + 4] annulation of conjugated heterodienes with 1,4-dipolar species. The brief backgrounds, the general reactions, the proposed mechanisms and their features are summarized. The prospects and challenges of this field are also outlined at the end of this review. In addition, to highlight the importance and practicality of these reactions, the properties of several series of eight-membered heterocycles have also been introduced briefly.

Abstract
A convenient synthetic protocol for regioselective and diastereoselective construction of complex dispiro-indanone-fluorenone-oxindole motifs was developed by the base-promoted annulation reaction of bindone and MBH carbonates of isatins by adjusting reaction conditions. DABCO promoted the annulation reaction of bindone and MBH carbonates of isatins in DCM at room temperature, affording dispiro[indene-2,4'-fluorene-1',3″-indoline] derivatives in good yields and with high diastereoselectivity. Triethylamine promoted the annulation reaction of two molecular 1,3-indanediones and MBH esters of isatins in ethanol at elevated temperature and selectively gave dispiro[indene-2,4'-fluorene-3',3″-indolines] in moderate yields. However, triethylamine promoted the annulation reaction of excess 1,3-indanediones and MBH esters of isatins in refluxing ethanol, affording dispiro[indene-2,4'-fluorene-3',3″-indolines] with the Z-isomer as the major product and the E-isomer as the minor product.

Abstract
The domino reaction of alkyl and aryl isocyanides with two molecules of 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones in acetonitrile at 80 °C resulted in unique functionalized spiro[dibenzo[a,f]azulene-6,2'-indenes] in good yields, in which the two 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones acted as different building blocks to construct the polycyclic system. More importantly, the unprecedented anticipation of the ortho-position of benzylidene group to form a novel dibenzo[a,f]azulene ring through a formal [5 + 2] cycloaddition process was first observed. On the other hand, DABCO-promoted reaction of the isocyanides with two molecules of 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones in acetonitrile at 80 °C afforded functionalized spiro[cyclopenta[a]-indene-2,2'-indene] derivatives.

Abstract
Phosphorus-based naphthalenes are formed by self-dimerization-cum-cyclization of α-aryl allenylphosphonates or allenylphosphine oxides using catalytic Pd(OAc)2in the presence of PPh3 and Et3N . This reaction involves [4 + 2]-cycloaddition with the (β,γ) double bond of one allene as the dienophile; the double bonds at the α-aryl-(β',γ') group and (α,β)-carbons of the second allene act as the diene part. A subsequent proton shift also takes place. Upon treating allenylphosphine oxides with Pd(OAc)2 [stoichiometry 2:1] in the presence of PPh3/Ag2CO3, a [Pd]-complex is isolated and structurally characterized. This complex can be used as a catalyst for C-C bond-forming reactions of phosphorus-based allenes with 2-iodophenol. Densely substituted 3,6-diphenylpyridazines are conveniently obtained in excellent yields by a thermally induced regioselective Inverse Electron Demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction of allenes with 3,6-diphenyltetrazine, followed by a [1,3]-H shift.

Abstract
A [2+2+2] annulation reaction between cyclohexanone, β-nitrostyrene and 2-arylidene-1,3-indanedione afforded multisubstituted spiro trans-decalinol derivatives in high chemical yields (up to 75%) and excellent diastereoselectivity (up to >20 : 1) at room temperature. This one-pot three-component system follows a triple cascade sequence via the Michael/nitro-Michael/Aldol process, resulting in the formation of three C-C bonds, five contiguous stereocenters as well as a spiro quaternary carbon center.

Abstract
The base promoted domino reaction of bindone ([1,2'-biindenylidene]-1',3,3'-trione) with common 1,3-dipolarophiles showed interesting molecular diversities, from which the unique spiro and fused indeno[1,2-a]fluorine derivatives were conveniently synthesized in satisfactory yields. In the presence of a base, bindone underwent formal [3 + 3] cycloaddition with satylidene malononitriles to give dispiro[indene-2,4'-fluorene-1',3''-indoline]. It also underwent formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition with 4-arylidene-pyrazol-3-ones to give diastereoisomeric spiro[indeno[1,2-a]fluorene-5,4'-pyrazole]. On the other hand, a triethylamine promoted reaction of three molecules of 1,3-indanediones and isatins in toluene afforded spiro[diindeno[2,1-b:2',1'-d]anthracene-11,3'-indoline] derivatives through the domino [4 + 2] cycloaddition and ring-expansion process.

Abstract
The kinetics of the reactions of tributylphosphine with allenic and olefinic Michael acceptors in dichloromethane at 20 °C was followed by photometric and NMR spectroscopic methods. Combination with DFT-calculated methyl anion affinities revealed the relevance of retroaddition barriers in phosphine-catalysed reactions when mixtures of allenic and olefinic substrates are used.

Abstract
Herein we describe a phosphine-catalyzed internal redox [4 + 2] annulation of 1,4-enynoates with electron-deficient alkenes, in which the γ- and φ-C(sp3)-H of the enynoates are formally oxidized for the annulation while the alkynyl moiety is converted to an alkene. The reaction offers an efficient synthesis of highly functionalized cyclohexenes in moderate to good yields with exclusive regioselectivity and high diastereoselectivity under mild conditions.

Abstract
A regioselective [3+2] cyclisation reaction between 2-arylidene-1,3-indanedione and ethyl 2,3-butadienoate catalysed by triphenylphosphine has been demonstrated to synthesize functionalised spirocyclic cyclopentenes. The reaction tolerated various electron-rich and electron-deficient aryl substituted 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones with high to excellent chemical yields (up to 99%) and moderate to good regioselectivity (up to 5 : 1). DFT studies have also been carried out to understand the regioselective nature of this reaction. The results of Frontier molecular orbital calculations and the activation energy (E a) favour the formation of compound 3avia γ-attack compared to that of 4avia α-attack.

Abstract
A DABCO-promoted annulation reaction of bindone ([1,2'-biindenylidene]-1',3,3'-trione) and 3-methyleneoxindoles showed very interesting molecular diversity under different reaction conditions. The base-promoted annulation reaction of bindone and 3-phenacylideneoxindoles in DCM at room temperature afforded spiro[indeno[1,2-a]fluorene-5,3'-indoline] derivatives in good yields and with high diastereoselectivity. However, the similar reaction of 2-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene) acetates resulted in Z/E-isomeric spiro[indeno[1,2-a]fluorene-5,3'-indolines] with diastereomeric ratios of 2:1 to 10:1. On the other hand, the DABCO-promoted annulation reaction of bindone and 3-methyleneoxindoles in acetonitrile at different temperatures selectively gave spiro[benzo[5,6]pentaleno[1,6a-b]naphthalene-7,3'-indoline] derivatives and complex dispiro[indoline-3,6'-[4b,6a]ethanoindeno[1,2-a]fluorene-14',3″-indolines] in satisfactory yields.

Abstract
The reactivity of 2-sulfonamidoindoles with acetoxy allenoates under phosphine catalysis depends on the disposition of the acetoxy (OAc) group on the allenoate. In the temperature-controlled [3 + 3] annulations, δ-acetoxy allenoates afforded dihydrocarboline and carboline scaffolds with carbon-nitrogen nucleophilic 2-sulfonamidoindoles, in which allenoate serves as a β-, γ-, and δ-carbon donor. At room temperature (25 °C), dihydro-α-carboline motifs were obtained exclusively through Michael addition, 1,4-proton shift, isomerization, 1,2-proton transfer, phosphine elimination, and aza-Michael addition. The higher temperature (80 °C) cascade protocol using Ph3P-Cs2CO3 combination involves addition-elimination, aza-Claisen rearrangement, tosyl migration, and aromatization as key steps to give α-carbolines containing tosyl functionality at the γ-carbon. In contrast, with β'-acetoxy allenoate, 2-sulfonamidoindole acts only as a carbo-nucleophile in (p-tolyl)3P-directed [4 + 1] spiro-annulation, leading to five-membered spiro-carbocyclic motifs essentially as single diastereomers (dr >20:1) via chemoselective carbo-annulation.

Abstract
We disclose an l-isoleucine-derived amide phosphine-catalyzed trimerization of γ-aryl-3-butynoates, which undergo an isomerization to allenoate, [3 + 2] cyclization, and Michael addition cascade. Exocyclopentene derivatives bearing an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter were constructed stereospecifically and enantioselectively. A wide variety of γ-aryl-3-butynoates could be employed to deliver optically pure cyclopentene derivatives in moderate to good yields with ee values of ≥95% and in most cases ≥98%.

Abstract
Phosphorus-based organocatalysis encompasses several subfields that have undergone rapid growth in recent years. This Outlook gives an overview of its various aspects. In particular, we highlight key advances in three topics: nucleophilic phosphine catalysis, organophosphorus catalysis to bypass phosphine oxide waste, and organophosphorus compound-mediated single electron transfer processes. We briefly summarize five additional topics: chiral phosphoric acid catalysis, phosphine oxide Lewis base catalysis, iminophosphorane super base catalysis, phosphonium salt phase transfer catalysis, and frustrated Lewis pair catalysis. Although it is not catalytic in nature, we also discuss novel discoveries that are emerging in phosphorus(V) ligand coupling. We conclude with some ideas about the future of organophosphorus catalysis.

Abstract
Spiro-annulation involving δ-acetoxy allenoate and alkyl benzoisothiazole dioxide (N-sulfonyl ketimine) triggered by DABCO/MeCO2H combination leads to an essentially single diastereomer via chemo- and regiospecific [4 + 2]-carboannulation and a new hydroxyl group is introduced. In contrast, DMAP-catalyzed benzannulation using the same reactants affords unsymmetrical m-teraryls via Mannich coupling, sequential proton transfers, and C-N bond cleavage. Here, δ-acetoxy allenoate serves as a 4C-synthon and the carboannulation is completely base dependent and mutually exclusive.
