Multimodal biosensing systems based on metal nanoparticles

Biosensors are currently among the most commonly used devices for analysing biomarkers and play an important role in environmental detection, food safety, and disease diagnosis. Researchers have developed multimodal biosensors instead of single-modal biosensors to meet increasing sensitivity, accuracy, and stability requirements. Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) are beneficial for preparing core probes for multimodal biosensors because of their excellent physical and chemical properties, such as easy regulation and modification, and because they can integrate diverse sensing strategies. This review mainly summarizes the excellent physicochemical properties of MNPs applied as biosensing probes and the principles of commonly used MNP-based multimodal sensing strategies. Recent applications and possible improvements of multimodal biosensors based on MNPs are also described, among which on-site inspection and sensitive detection are particularly important. The current challenges and prospects for multimodal biosensors based on MNPs may provide readers with a new perspective on this field.

Multi-Responsive Molecular Encapsulation and Release Based on Hydrogen-Bonded Azo-Macrocycle

Research on stimuli-responsive host-guest systems is at the cutting edge of supramolecular chemistry, owing to their numerous potential applications such as catalysis, molecular machines, and drug delivery. Herein, we present a multi-responsive host-guest system comprising azo-macrocycle 1 and 4,4'-bipyridinium salt G1 for pH-, photo-, and cation- responsiveness. Previously, we reported a novel hydrogen-bonded azo-macrocycle 1. The size of this host can be controlled through light-induced E↔Z photo-isomerization of the constituent azo-benzenes. The host is found in this work to be capable of forming stable complexes with bipyridinium/pyridinium salts, and implementing guest capture and release with G1 under light in a controlled manner. The binding and release of the guest in the complexes can also be easily controlled reversibly by using acid and base. Moreover, the cation competition-induced dissociation of the complex 1a₂⊃G1 is achieved. These findings are expected to be useful in regulating encapsulation for sophisticated supramolecular systems.

The aqueous supramolecular chemistry of crown ethers

This mini-review summarizes the seminal exploration of aqueous supramolecular chemistry of crown ether macrocycles. In history, most research of crown ethers were focusing on their supramolecular chemistry in organic phase or in gas phase. In sharp contrast, the recent research evidently reveal that crown ethers are very suitable for studying abroad range of the properties and applications of water interactions, from: high water-solubility, control of Hofmeister series, "structural water", and supramolecular adhesives. Key studies revealing more details about the properties of water and aqueous solutions are highlighted.

Multi-stimuli-responsive Zn(II)-Schiff base complexes adjusted by rotatable aromatic rings

Multifunctional luminescent materials have attracted intensive interest. However, the mechanisms behind them are still to be explored. In this work, three Zn(II) complexes based on Schiff bases (HL¹ and HL²) that contain rotatable aromatic rings were designed and prepared. They exhibited different mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) and acidochromism. The polymorphous ZnL¹₂ and ZnL^1a₂ crystallize in different crystal systems with different conformations. The ligands in ZnL¹₂ adopt a more twisted conformation than those in ZnL^1a₂. ZnL¹₂ exhibits MCL with high contrast, while ZnL^1a₂ exhibits a negligible MCL property. This may be due to the looser packing of the complex induced by the more twisted conformation of the ligand HL¹. ZnL¹₂ could undergo crystal phase transformation into ZnL^1a₂ by grinding/fuming cycles. To increase the flexibility of the ligand, a methylene group was introduced to result in HL², which can improve the mechanochromic luminescence effect of the Zn(II) complex with high color contrast. The ligands involved in coordination generally adopt a more twisted conformation than those free ligands due to the steric hindrance, resulting in more obvious MCL for complexes. By comparing the luminescence of ligands and their complexes under acid-base stimulation, it is found that the acidochromic properties could be attributed to the generation of ligands at the surface of complexes via the gaseous HCl-solid Zn(II) complex reaction. The high contrast mechanochromic and acidochromic luminescence properties would lead to promising potential applications of these complexes in smart fluorescent materials, and would also provide some ideas for the design of multi-stimuli responsive molecules.
