Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative C-H Olefination of Unsaturated Acrylamides with Unactivated Olefins

DFT Study on the Mechanisms and Selectivities in Rh (III)-Catalyzed [5 + 1] Annulation of 2-Alkenylanilides and 2-Alkylphenols with Allenyl Acetates

The mechanisms and regio-, chemo-, and stereoselectivity were theoretically investigated in the Rh(III)-catalyzed [5 + 1] annulation of 2-alkenylanilides and 2-alkylphenols with allenyl acetates. Two different reactants, 2-alkenylanilides and 2-alkylphenols, were selected as model systems in the density functional theory calculations. The obtained theoretical results show that both these reactants exhibit similar steps, namely, (1) N-H/O-H deprotonation and C-H activation, (2) allenyl acetate migratory insertion, (3) β-oxygen elimination, (4) intramolecular nucleophilic addition of the nitrogen/oxygen-rhodium bond resulting in [5 + 1]-annulation, and (5) protonation with the formation of the desired product and regeneration of the Rh(III) catalyst. The theoretical evidence suggests that the selectivity is determined at the step of allenyl acetate's migratory insertion. Moreover, the regioselectivity is driven by electronic effects, while the interaction energies (C-H···π and C-H···O interactions) play a more imperative role in controlling the stereoselectivity. The obtained theoretical results not only well rationalize the experimental observations but also provide important mechanistic insights for related types of [5 + 1]-annulation reactions.

Chiral Transient Ligand Enabled Enantioselective Synthesis of Atropisomers Decorated with Unactivated Olefins via a Palladium-Catalyzed C-H Olefination

Herein, atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral biaryls with unactivated olefins by a palladium-catalyzed C-H olefination using a chiral transient directing group strategy has been disclosed. This protocol is well compatible with a variety of biaryl-2-aldehydes as well as various olefins such as allyl sulfonamides and allyl sulfones to provide the atroposelective olefinated products in synthetically useful yields with excellent enantioselectivities up to >99% ee. In addition, a wide number of axially chiral biaryl alcohols were synthesized by the simple diversification of the products in excellent enantioselectivity.

Synthesis of Selenoflavones via Ruthenium-Catalyzed Selenylation of Unsaturated Acids

An efficient method for pharmaceutically useful selenoflavones via a ruthenium-catalyzed selenylation reaction is demonstrated. The ruthenium-catalyzed selenylation was applied to synthesize diverse alkenyl selenides from simple unsaturated acids/amides and diaryl diselenides. A wide range of differently substituted diaryl diselenides can be applied in this protocol with a good functional group with excellent stereo- and regioselectivity.

Ru(II)-Catalyzed C-H Alkenylation of Benzimidates with Unactivated Olefins: A Route to ortho-Alkenylated Benzonitriles

A Ru(II)-catalyzed C-H alkenylation of benzimidates with unactivated alkenes providing ortho-alkenylated benzonitriles in good to excellent yields in a highly regio- and stereoselective manner is described. In the reaction, an imidate group converted into a nitrile under the reaction conditions. The alkenylation reaction was compatible with various substituted benzimidates as well as functionalized unactivated olefins, including ibuprofen-, neproxen-, coumarin-, and cholesterol-substituted alkenes. A feasible reaction mechanism was proposed to account for the present alkenylation reaction.

Recent Advances in Alkenyl sp2 C-H and C-F Bond Functionalizations: Scope, Mechanism, and Applications

Alkenes and their derivatives are featured widely in a variety of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials. Significant efforts have been made toward the development of new and practical methods to access this important class of compounds by selectively activating the alkenyl C(sp²)-H bonds in recent years. In this comprehensive review, we describe the state-of-the-art strategies for the direct functionalization of alkenyl sp² C-H and C-F bonds until June 2022. Moreover, metal-free, photoredox, and electrochemical strategies are also covered. For clarity, this review has been divided into two parts; the first part focuses on currently available alkenyl sp² C-H functionalization methods using different alkene derivatives as the starting materials, and the second part describes the alkenyl sp² C-F bond functionalization using easily accessible gem-difluoroalkenes as the starting material. This review includes the scope, limitations, mechanistic studies, stereoselective control (using directing groups as well as metal-migration strategies), and their applications to complex molecule synthesis where appropriate. Overall, this comprehensive review aims to document the considerable advancements, current status, and emerging work by critically summarizing the contributions of researchers working in this fascinating area and is expected to stimulate novel, innovative, and broadly applicable strategies for alkenyl sp² C-H and C-F bond functionalizations in the coming years.

Transition metal-catalyzed double Cvinyl-H bond activation: synthesis of conjugated dienes

Conjugated dienes have occupied a pivotal position in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. They act as important synthons for the synthesis of various biologically important molecules and therefore, gain tremendous attention worldwide. A wide range of synthetic routes to access these versatile molecules have been developed in the past decades. Transition metal-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) has emerged as one of the utmost front-line research areas in current synthetic organic chemistry due to its high atom economy, efficiency, and viability. In this review, an up-to-date summary including scope, limitations, mechanistic studies, stereoselectivities, and synthetic applications of transition metal-catalyzed double C_vinyl-H bond activation for the synthesis of conjugated dienes has been reported since 2013. The literature reports mentioned in this review have been classified into three different categories, i.e. (a) C_vinyl-C_vinyl bond formation via oxidative homo-coupling of terminal alkenes; (b) C_vinyl-C_vinyl bond formation via non-directed oxidative cross-coupling of linear/cyclic alkenes and terminal/internal alkenes, and (c) C_vinyl-C_vinyl bond formation via oxidative cross-coupling of directing group bearing alkenes and terminal/internal alkenes. Overall, this review aims to provide a concise overview of the current status of the considerable development in this field and is expected to stimulate further innovation and research in the future.

Versatile Reactivity of Half-Sandwich Rhodium(III) Iminophosphonamide Complexes

Novel 18e̅ and 16e̅ pentamethylcyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) complexes [(η⁵-C₅Me₅)RhX(NPN)] (1a,b, X = Cl; 2a-c, X = PF₆, BAr₄^F) with chelating zwitterionic iminophosphonamide (NPN) ligands (Ph₂P(NR)(NR'); a, R = R' = p-Tol; b, R = p-Tol, R' = Me; c, R = R' = Me) were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the 16e̅ complexes 2, the rhodium (Rh) atom is efficiently stabilized by π-donation of unshared N electrons, thus hampering coordination of the external ligands and rendering the 18e̅ complexes labile. Due to low coordination enthalpy, the cationic 18e̅ monocarbonyl and pyridine adducts 2a·L are stable only at low temperatures. At room temperature, 2·CO adducts readily give stable carbonyl-carbamoyl complexes [(η⁵-C₅Me₅)Rh(CO){(CO(NR')Ph₂P(NR)}]⁺ (4) formed as a result of CO insertion into the Rh-N bond, thus showing high nucleophilicity of the N atoms in 18e̅ complexes. High basicity of the Na⁺NPN^- precursors caused side deprotonation of the η⁵-C₅Me₅ ligand during the synthesis of 1 that yields unstable fulvene Rh(I) complexes [(η⁴-C₅Me₄CH₂)Rh{Ph₂P(NR)(NR')₂}] (3a,b). Complex 3a undergoes a facile reaction with isoprene to yield an unusual [(η⁵:η¹-C₅Me₄(CH₂)C(Me)═CHCH₂)Rh(NPN)] complex─the first example of intermolecular 1,4-metallacycloaddition of diene to the Rh-fulvene complex.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed Enone Carbonyl/Ketone-Directed Aerobic C-H Olefination of Aromatics with Unactivated Olefins

A Rh(III)-catalyzed weak enone carbonyl/ketone-assisted aerobic oxidative C-H olefination of aromatics with unactivated alkenes has been developed. This protocol involves cross-dehydrogenative Heck-type olefination reaction of various substituted biologically relevant chalcones and aromatic ketones such as acetophenones and chromones with various functionalized unactivated olefins in moderate to good yields. Further, ortho-alkylation of chalcones with norbornene is also demonstrated. A possible reaction mechanism involving weak chelation-assisted C-H activation/insertion/β-hydride elimination was proposed and supported by the deuterium labeling studies.

Looking deep into C-H functionalization: the synthesis and application of cyclopentadienyl and related metal catalysts

Metal catalyzed C-H functionalization offers a versatile platform for methodology development and a wide variety of reactions now exist for the chemo- and site-selective functionalization of organic molecules. Cyclopentadienyl-metal (CpM) complexes of transition metals and their correlative analogues have found widespread application in this area, and herein we highlight several key applications of commonly used transition-metal Cp-type catalysts. In addition, an understanding of transition metal Cp-type catalyst synthesis is important, particularly where modifications to the catalyst structure are required for different applications, and a summary of this aspect is given.

Rhodium(iii)-catalyzed synthesis of trisubstituted furans via vinylic C-H bond activation

We report an Rh(iii)-catalyzed one-pot synthesis of trisubstituted furan derivatives through C_vinyl-H activation of α,β-unsaturated ketones with acrylates. The control study revealed that the Heck-type product obtained undergoes Paal-Knorr type cyclization in the presence of an Ag salt. Hence, the Ag salt plays a dual role of a halide scavenger and a Lewis acid catalyst for Paal-Knorr type cyclization. The furan product can be transferred into the respective alcohol and acid derivatives which are useful intermediates in synthesizing biologically active molecules.

Effect of Transition Metals on Chemodivergent Cross-Coupling of Acrylamides with Vinyl Acetate via C-H Activation

A novel chemodivergent cross-coupling of acrylamides and vinyl acetates has been realized via metal-catalyzed vinylic C-H activation. The selective olefinic C-H vinylation and alkenylation reaction was examined with a variety of differently functionalized acrylamides. The reaction efficiently generates a range of highly synthetically valuable butadienes with good functional group tolerance in good to moderate yields. A possible catalytic reaction mechanism involving the chelation-assisted olefinic C-H activation via an acetate-assisted deprotonation pathway is proposed.

Ru(II)-Catalyzed Controlled Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling of Benzamides with Activated Olefins via Weakly Coordinating Primary Amides

Ru(II)-catalyzed regioselective ortho-alkenylation of primary benzamides with activated olefins has been realized over the competitive cyclized products. This reaction overall proceeds via a cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction using a simple and weakly coordinating primary amide group in the presence of an inexpensive Ru(II) salt and allows the controlled introduction of olefin motifs at the ortho-position of benzamides. The key to the success of this strategy depends on fine-tuning the reaction conditions. The developed protocol has demonstrated excellent regio/diastereoselectivity and a good functional group tolerance with wide substrate scope and obviates the requirement of external auxiliaries as well as the costly metal catalyst. Detailed mechanistic studies indicate the involvement of the base-assisted internal electrophilic-type substitution (BIES) step in the reaction mechanism.

Ruthenium(II)-Catalyzed Redox-Neutral C-H Alkylation of Arylamides with Unactivated Olefins

A Ru(II)-catalyzed weak chelating group-aided ortho-C-H alkylation of arylamides with unactivated olefins in a redox-neutral fashion has been demonstrated. The present alkylation reaction was well-suited for various substituted arylamides and unactivated aliphatic alkenes. In this alkylation reaction, pivalic acid plays dual role in which it delivers the proton source in a protonation step and the corresponding acetate moiety deprotonates the ortho-C-H bond of the arylamides.

Aerobic Oxidative C-H Olefination of Arylamides with Unactivated Olefins via a Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Activation

An efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-H alkenylation of arylamides with unactivated alkenes is described. The olefination reaction was compatible with various substituted arylamides including primary, secondary, and tertiary as well as functionalized unactivated olefins. Meanwhile, ortho mono/bis-alkylated arylamides were synthesized in the reaction of arylamides with norbornene. In the alkenylation reaction, molecular oxygen along with organic acid was used to regenerate the active catalyst for the next catalytic cycle. A possible reaction mechanism involving C-H activation/insertion/β-hydride elimination followed by aerobic oxidation was proposed and supported by the deuterium labeling studies.
