Aerobic Oxidative C-H Olefination of Arylamides with Unactivated Olefins via a Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Activation

Synthesis of 1H-Isoindoles via Ruthenium(II)-Catalyzed Cyclization of Benzimidates with Alkenes

A Ru(II)-catalyzed efficient synthesis of 1H-isoindoles via the cyclization of benzimidates with alkenes has been demonstrated. This methodology exhibits high compatibility with various functionalized activated and unactivated olefins containing different sensitive functional groups. This protocol provides an effective method for synthesizing various 1H-isoindole derivatives in decent to excellent yields. Notably, the ortho-alkenylation of benzimidates with unactivated alkenes was achieved. A potential reaction mechanism has been suggested that involves C-H activation, 1,2 insertion, and β-hydride elimination subsequent to aza-Michael addition.

A Fujiwara-Moritani-Type Alkenylation Using a Traceless Directing Group Strategy: A Rare Example of C-C Bond Formation towards the C2-Carbon of Terminal Alkenes

Herein we report, a rhodium-catalyzed Fujiwara-Moritani-type reaction of unactivated terminal alkenes and benzoic acid derivatives bearing electron donating residues under mild conditions. The acid functionality acts as a traceless directing group delivering products alkenylated in meta-position to the electron donating substituent in contrast to the usually obtained ortho- and para-substitution in Friedel-Crafts-type reactions. Remarkably, the new C-C bond is formed to the C2 of the terminal olefin, in contrast to similar reported transformations. Initially formed mixtures of exo- and endo-double bond isomers can be efficiently isomerized to the more stable endo-products.

Ru(II)-Catalyzed C-H Alkenylation of Benzimidates with Unactivated Olefins: A Route to ortho-Alkenylated Benzonitriles

A Ru(II)-catalyzed C-H alkenylation of benzimidates with unactivated alkenes providing ortho-alkenylated benzonitriles in good to excellent yields in a highly regio- and stereoselective manner is described. In the reaction, an imidate group converted into a nitrile under the reaction conditions. The alkenylation reaction was compatible with various substituted benzimidates as well as functionalized unactivated olefins, including ibuprofen-, neproxen-, coumarin-, and cholesterol-substituted alkenes. A feasible reaction mechanism was proposed to account for the present alkenylation reaction.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed Enone Carbonyl/Ketone-Directed Aerobic C-H Olefination of Aromatics with Unactivated Olefins

A Rh(III)-catalyzed weak enone carbonyl/ketone-assisted aerobic oxidative C-H olefination of aromatics with unactivated alkenes has been developed. This protocol involves cross-dehydrogenative Heck-type olefination reaction of various substituted biologically relevant chalcones and aromatic ketones such as acetophenones and chromones with various functionalized unactivated olefins in moderate to good yields. Further, ortho-alkylation of chalcones with norbornene is also demonstrated. A possible reaction mechanism involving weak chelation-assisted C-H activation/insertion/β-hydride elimination was proposed and supported by the deuterium labeling studies.

Redox-neutral rhodium(III)-catalyzed chemo- and regiospecific [4 + 1] annulation between benzamides and alkenes for the synthesis of functionalized isoindolinones

Herein, using electron-deficient alkenes embedded with an oxidizing function/leaving group as a rare and nontraditional C₁ synthon, we have achieved the redox-neutral Rh(III)-catalyzed chemo- and regioselective [4 + 1] annulation of benzamides for the synthesis of functionalized isoindolinones. This method features broad substrate scope, good to excellent yields, excellent chemo- and regioselectivity, good tolerance of functional groups and mild external-oxidant-free conditions.

Construction of Bulky Ligand Libraries by Ru(II)-Catalyzed P(III)-Assisted ortho-C-H Secondary Alkylation

Modification of commercially available biaryl monophosphine ligands via ruthenium^(II)-catalyzed P^(III)-directed-catalyzed ortho C-H secondary alkylation is described. The use of highly ring-strained norbornene as a secondary alkylating reagent is the key to this transformation. A series of highly bulky ligands with a norbornyl group were obtained in excellent yields. The modified ligands with secondary alkyl group outperformed common substituted phosphines in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction at a ppm mole level of Pd catalyst.

Ru(II)-Catalyzed Controlled Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling of Benzamides with Activated Olefins via Weakly Coordinating Primary Amides

Ru(II)-catalyzed regioselective ortho-alkenylation of primary benzamides with activated olefins has been realized over the competitive cyclized products. This reaction overall proceeds via a cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction using a simple and weakly coordinating primary amide group in the presence of an inexpensive Ru(II) salt and allows the controlled introduction of olefin motifs at the ortho-position of benzamides. The key to the success of this strategy depends on fine-tuning the reaction conditions. The developed protocol has demonstrated excellent regio/diastereoselectivity and a good functional group tolerance with wide substrate scope and obviates the requirement of external auxiliaries as well as the costly metal catalyst. Detailed mechanistic studies indicate the involvement of the base-assisted internal electrophilic-type substitution (BIES) step in the reaction mechanism.

Ruthenium(II)-Catalyzed Redox-Neutral C-H Alkylation of Arylamides with Unactivated Olefins

A Ru(II)-catalyzed weak chelating group-aided ortho-C-H alkylation of arylamides with unactivated olefins in a redox-neutral fashion has been demonstrated. The present alkylation reaction was well-suited for various substituted arylamides and unactivated aliphatic alkenes. In this alkylation reaction, pivalic acid plays dual role in which it delivers the proton source in a protonation step and the corresponding acetate moiety deprotonates the ortho-C-H bond of the arylamides.
