Ru(0)-catalysed synthesis of borylated polyene building blocks by cross-dimerisation toward cross-coupling

Conjugated and non-conjugated polyenes are important substructures and are often found in biologically active compounds and natural products. Their preparation often needs multiple steps or iterative reactions and as a result, they have poor step economies. In this feature article, we show a new methodology to prepare these substructures by combinations of cross-dimerisation giving borylated polyenes and subsequent cross-coupling reactions. This divergent reaction strategy allows for the opportunity to access many bioactive compounds and natural products as well as some electronic materials.

Mechanosynthesis of Pyrrole-2-carboxylic Acids via Copper-Catalyzed Spiroannulation/Ring-Opening Aromatization of 4-Arylidene Isoxazol-5-ones with Enamino Esters

An efficient and practical tandem reaction of 4-arylidene isoxazol-5-ones with enamino esters catalyzed by an inexpensive copper salt has been established in a ball mill. This innovative approach yields a diverse array of structurally novel pyrrole-2-carboxylic acids, showing excellent tolerance toward different functional groups. By integrating spiroannulation and ring-opening aromatization processes, this protocol introduces a facile and cost-effective strategy for synthesizing highly functionalized pyrrole derivatives.

I2-catalyzed synthesis of 3-aminopyrrole with homopropargylic amines and nitrosoarenes

The synthesis of 3-aminopyrrole using the amination reagent nitrosoarenes and homopropargylic amines catalyzed by I2 through cyclization and amination has been developed. This protocol features excellent functional group tolerance and mild reaction conditions, yielding 3-aminopyrroles in moderate to good yields without a metal catalyst. This method realizes the construction and amination of the 3-aminopyrroles in which nitrosoarenes serve as the amine source and oxidant.

Substituent-Controllable Cascade Regioselective Annulation of β-Enaminones with N-Sulfonyl Triazoles for Modular Access to Imidazoles and Pyrroles

A controllable synthesis of trisubstituted imidazoles and pyrroles has been developed through rhodium(II)-catalyzed regioselective annulation of N-sulfonyl-1,2,3-trizaoles with β-enaminones. The imidazole ring was formed through a 1,1-insertion of the N-H bond to α-imino rhodium carbene, followed by a subsequent intramolecular 1,4-conjugate addition. This occurred when the α-carbon atom of the amino group was bearing a methyl group. Additionally, the pyrrole ring was constructed by utilizing a phenyl substituent and undergoing intramolecular nucleophilic addition. The mild conditions, good tolerance towards functional groups, gram-scale synthesis capability, and ability to undergo valuable transformations of the products qualify this unique protocol as an efficient tool for the synthesis of N-heterocycles.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Divergent Cycloadditions of Alkynes with Conjugated Dienes Yielding 3-Vinylcyclobutenes, Bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenes, and Cyclohexa-1,4-dienes

A traditional cobalt catalyst system still contains undiscovered reactivity. Depending on the tertiary phosphines and substrates used, the catalytic system using CoBr₂/tertiary phosphine/Zn/ZnI₂ catalyzes divergent cycloadditions of internal alkynes with conjugated dienes, yielding 3-alkenylcyclobut-1-enes, bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenes, and cyclohexa-1,4-dienes. A [CoBr₂(PPh₃)₂]/Zn/ZnI₂-catalyzed reaction of 3-hexyne (1a) with 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)butadiene (2a) at room temperature in CH₂Cl₂ exclusively produces a [2 + 2] cycloaddition product (E)-2-(2,3-diethylcyclobut-2-ene-1-yl)vinyl-4-methoxybenzene (3aa). When [CoBr₂(dppp)]/Zn/ZnI₂ is used as a catalyst, a bicyclic compound 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-diethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hex-2-ene (4aa) is dominantly formed in a 77% yield. The CoBr₂/dppe/Zn/ZnI₂ system can undergo a [2 + 4] cycloaddition to yield 3-(4-anisyl)-1,2-diethylcyclohexa-1,4-diene (5aa) as the dominant product in 38% yield. The bite angles of the ligands used contribute significantly to this catalytic diversity.
