The Field of Main Group Lewis Acids and Lewis Superacids: Important Basics and Recent Developments

New developments in the field of Lewis acidity are highlighted, with the focus of novel Lewis acids and Lewis superacids of group 2, 13, 14, and 15 elements. Several important basics, illustrated by modern examples (classification of Donor-Acceptor (DA) complexes, amphoteric nature of any compound in terms of DA interactions, reorganization energies of main group Lewis acids and the role of the energies of frontier orbitals) are presented and discussed. It is emphasized that the Lewis acidity phenomena are general and play vital role in different areas of chemistry: from weak "atomophilic" interactions to the complexes of Lewis superacids.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Heavier Pnictogen Complexes

Recent success in the synthesis of π-conjugated heavier pnictogen (As, Sb, and Bi) compounds and their transition metal complexes has led to the current surge in interest that led to significant development in the field of photophysical and optoelectronic properties of heavier pnictogens and their transition metal complexes. The presence of heavier pnictogens (As, Sb and Bi) in the molecular skeleton promotes inter-system crossing (ISC) and reverse inter-system crossing (RISC), because of the heavy atom effect, via altering the intermolecular interactions and orbital energy levels. As a result, π-conjugated heavier pnictogen compounds such as arsines, dibenzoarsepins, arsinoquinoline, heterofluorene, benzo[b]heterole (heterole=arsole, bismole, and stibole) show unique optoelectronic properties such as narrow bandgap, low-energy absorption, and long-wavelength emission than lighter pnictogen-based compounds. This review focuses on recent advances in the synthesis and photophysical properties of heavier pnictogen compounds. The synthesis and photophysical properties of heavier pnictogens are discussed and elaborated.

Heavier element-containing aromatics of [4n+2]-electron systems

While the implication of the aromaticity concept has been dramatically expanded to date since its emergence in 1865, the classical [4n+2]/4n-electron counting protocol still plays an essential role in evaluating the aromatic nature of compounds. Over the last few decades, a variety of heavier heterocycles featuring the formal [4n+2] π-electron arrangements have been developed, which allows for assessing their aromatic nature. In this review, we present recent developments of the [4n+2]-electron systems of heavier heterocycles involving group 13-15 elements. The synthesis, spectroscopic data, structural parameters, computational data, and reactivity are introduced.

(N),C,N-Coordinated Heavier Group 13-15 Compounds: Synthesis, Structure and Applications

The aim of this review is to summarize recent achievements in the field of (N),C,N-coordinated group 13-15 compounds not only regarding their synthesis and structure, but mainly focusing on their potential applications. Relevant compounds contain various types of N-coordinating ligands built up on an ortho-(di)substituted phenyl platform. Thus, group 13 and 14 derivatives were used as single-source precursors for the deposition of semiconducting thin films, as building blocks for the preparation of high-molecular polymers with remarkable optical and chemical properties or as compounds with interesting reactivity in hydrometallation processes. Group 15 derivatives function as catalysts in the Mannich reaction, in the allylation of aldehydes or activation of CO₂ . They were used as transmetallation reagents in transition metal catalysed coupling reactions. The univalent species serve as ligands for transition metals, activate alkynes or alkenes and are utilized as catalysts in the transfer hydrogenation of azo-compounds.

Design of Conjugated Molecules Presenting Short-Wavelength Luminescence by Utilizing Heavier Atoms of the Same Element Group

The introduction of heavy atoms into conjugated molecules often induces a redshift in the emission spectra. Conversely, we report here a blueshifting effect in the absorption and emission bands of a conjugated organic dye by employing a heavier atom from the same element group. Boron complexes having oxygen- and sulfur-bridged structures in the ligand moiety were synthesized, and their optical properties were compared. Significant optical bands in the absorption and luminescence spectra of the sulfur-bridged complex were observed in a shorter wavelength region than those of the oxygen-bridged complex. Theoretical calculations suggest that replacement of the bridging atom by a heavier one should reduce molecular planarity because of the larger atom size. As a result, the degree of electronic conjugation decreases, and this is followed by a blueshift in the optical bands. Finally, a blue-emissive crystal is demonstrated.

Synthesis of Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Conjugated Polymers Composed of Group 13 Diiminate Complexes with Tunable Energy Levels via Alteration of Central Element

Conjugated polymers containing boron and gallium diiminate complexes were prepared with various electron-donating comonomers via pre- and post-complexation methods, respectively. From a comparison of emission quantum yields between solution and film states, it was seen that all polymers containing group 13 elements possessed an aggregation-induced emission property. Additionally, the frontier orbital energies and the optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers can be tuned by altering a central element at the complex moieties as well as by changing a comonomer unit. In particular, it was demonstrated that the gallium atom can contribute to stabilizing the energy levels of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, resulting in narrow band gaps of the conjugated polymers. This study presents the potential of gallium not only for preparing solid-state emissive conjugated polymers but also for fabricating low-band gap materials by employing the conjugated ligand.

Development of emissive aminopentaazaphenalene derivatives employing a design strategy for obtaining luminescent conjugated molecules by modulating the symmetry of molecular orbitals with substituent effects

This communication describes the transformation of a non-emissive heterocycle into a luminophore via modulation of molecular orbitals by the introduction of dialkylamine group.

[d]-Carbon-carbon double bond engineering in diazaphosphepines: a pathway to modulate the chemical and electronic structures of heteropines

We have designed and synthesized the first examples of 7-membered diazaphosphepines using phosphorus-amine (P-N) chemistry. Different from previous functional protocols of heteropines, the installation of π-conjugated substituents having diverse chemistries at the [d]-C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond position of heteropine core allows us to effectively control the chemical and electronic structures in both the ground and excited states of these diazaphosphepines. This functionalization has led to a diverse set of crystal structures, which has in turn provided access to rich photophysical and redox properties. Of particular interest is the evidence for planar π-conjugated backbone in our non-aromatic heteropine and twisted intramolecular charge transfer, which have never been reported for heteropines. The introduction of electron-accepting substituents at [d]-position of diazaphosphepines results in heteropines that are more electron deficient than any heteropine reported to-date. As proof of concept, we have fabricated organic solar cells with heteropines as non-fullerene acceptors.

High HOMO levels and narrow energy band gaps of dithienogalloles

We synthesized air- and moisture-stable dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]galloles containing four-coordinated gallium atoms. The electron-donating properties and resonance effects of gallium atoms in dithienogalloles were demonstrated.
