Abstract
Difluorocarbene is a simple and versatile one-carbon unit for synthesizing acyclic and cyclic organofluorine compounds. However, the use of difluorocarbene in organic synthesis has been relatively limited because of the harsh conditions required for its generation, the toxicity of the precursors, and undesired dimerization. This feature article provides an account of (i) the generation of free and metal difluorocarbenes from trimethylsilyl 2,2-difluoro-2-(fluorosulfonyl)acetate (TFDA) or BrCF2CO2Li/Na and (ii) their application to the facile synthesis of valuable organofluorine compounds. The difluorocarbenes thus generated react with (thio)carbonyl compounds and silyl dienol ethers to provide a wide variety of products such as (a) difluoromethyl (thio)ethers, (b) fluorinated thiophenes, (c) fluorinated thia/oxazoles, (d) fluorinated cyclopentanones and (e) difluoroalkenes.

Abstract
We have developed a new strategy for controllable single and double difluoromethylene (CF2 ) formal insertions into C-H bonds of aldehydes with nearly full selectivity under transition-metal-free conditions. The key to the success of controllable CF2 insertions lies in the well-defined formation of 2,2-difluoroenolsilyl ether and 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorocyclopropanolsilyl ether intermediates using difluorocarbene reagent TMSCF2 Br (TMS=trimethylsilyl). These two intermediates can react with various electrophiles including proton sources and various halogenation reagents, allowing for the access to diverse arrays of ketones containing difluoromethylene (CF2 ) and tetrafluoroethylene (CF2 CF2 ) units. The first synthesis of relatively stable 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorocyclopropanolsilyl ethers has been achieved, which offers a new platform to explore other unknown chemical space.

Abstract
A novel methodology for in situ generation of Fischer-type metal-carbene complexes was developed. Photoirradiation to a mixture of an acylsilane and a cationic copper complex cleanly gave a Fischer-type copper-siloxycarbene complex, which was detected by spectroscopic methods. This carbene complex reacted with siloxydienes in a [4 + 1] cycloaddition manner to give cyclopentene derivatives. It is noteworthy that this reaction proceeds with a catalytic amount of copper through in situ generation of a Fischer-type copper-siloxycarbene complex intermediate.

Abstract
In view of the importance of both fluorinated synthons and homoenolate equivalents, synthetic application of difluorocyclopropanols is desired but remains challenging due to their thermodynamic instability. Herein, we use siloxydifluorocyclopropanes as difluorocyclopropanol precursors to carry out new Cu-catalyzed ring-opening defluorinative alkylation. With α-bromo carboxylic esters as coupling partners, the reaction affords γ-fluoro-δ-ketoesters via a CuI/CuII catalytic cycle. Interestingly, by the use of α-bromoamides, the ring-opening defluorinative alkylation is followed by an additional intramolecular C-N oxidative coupling to deliver a lactam intermediate, which further undergoes defluorination, hydrolysis, ring opening, and dehydration cascade via a CuI/CuII/CuIII catalytic pathway, leading to γ,δ-diketonitriles as the final products.

Abstract
Electronic structure calculations have been used for the effective triage of substituent effects on difluorinated vinylcyclopropane precursors and their ability to undergo vinyl cyclopropane rearrangements (VCPR). Groups which effectively stabilised radicals, specifically heteroarenes, were found to result in the lowest energy barriers. Ten novel precursors were synthesised to test the accuracy of computational predictions; the most reactive species which contained heteroarenes underwent thermal rearrangements at room temperature to afford novel difluorocyclopentenes and fluorinated benzocycloheptadienes through competing VCPR and [3,3]-rearrangement pathways, respectively. More controlled rearrangement of ethyl 3-(1'(2'2'-difluoro-3'-benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)cyclopropyl)propenoate (22) allowed these competing pathways to be monitored at the same time and activation energies for both reactions were determined; Ea(VCPR) = (23.4 ± 0.2) kcal mol-1 and Ea([3,3]) = (24.9 ± 0.3) kcal mol-1. Comparing our calculated activation energies with these parameters showed that no single method stood out as the most accurate for predicting barrier heights; (U)M05-2X/6-31+G* methodology remained the best for VCPR but M06-2X/6-31G* was better for the [3,3]-rearrangement. The consistency observed with (U)B3LYP/6-31G* calculations meant that it came closest to a universal method for dealing with these systems. The developed computational design model correctly predicted the observed selectivity of rearrangement pathways for both our system and literature compounds.
