Abstract
Design, synthesis and application of benzene bioisosteres have attracted a lot of attention in the past 20 years. Recently, bicyclo[2.1.1]hexanes have emerged as highly attractive bioisosteres for ortho- and meta-substituted benzenes. Herein we report a mild, scalable and transition-metal-free protocol for the construction of highly substituted bicyclo[2.1.1]hexan-2-ones through Lewis acid catalyzed (3+2)-cycloaddition of bicyclo[1.1.0]-butane ketones with disubstituted ketenes. The reaction shows high functional group tolerance as documented by the successful preparation of various 3-alkyl-3-aryl as well as 3,3-bisalkyl bicyclo[2.1.1]hexan-2-ones (26 examples, up to 89 % yield). Postfunctionalization of the exocyclic ketone moiety is also demonstrated.

Abstract
A new type of dimerization of dimethyl (β-styryl)malonates in the presence of TiCl4 accompanied by elimination of a methanol molecule was discovered. Selective methods for the synthesis of substituted trimethyl 4-hydroxy-[1,1'-biaryl]-3,3,5(2H)-tricarboxylates and trimethyl 7-hydroxy-9,10-dihydro-5,9-methanobenzo[8]annulene-6,8,8(5H)-tricarboxylates were developed. The regularities of the occurring processes were determined and a similar reaction of β-styrylmalonate with benzylidenemalonate in the presence of TiCl4 was performed in the scope of the suggested mechanism.

Abstract
Azepanes are important seven‐membered heterocycles, which are present in numerous natural and synthetic compounds. However, the development of convergent synthetic methods to access them remains challenging. Herein, we report the Lewis acid catalyzed (4+3) annulative addition of aryl and amino donor‐acceptor cyclopropanes with 2‐aza‐1,3‐dienes. Densely substituted azepane derivatives were obtained in good to excellent yields and with high diastereoselectivity. The reaction occurred under mild conditions with ytterbium triflate as the catalyst. The use of copper triflate with a trisoxazoline (Tox) ligand led to an enantioselective transformation. The obtained cycloadducts were convenient substrates for a series of further modifications, showing the synthetic utility of these compounds.

Abstract
Diazomalonates have been demonstrated as effective metalloradicophiles for asymmetric radical olefin cyclopropanation via Co(II)-metalloradical catalysis (MRC). Supported by D 2-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin ligand, Co(II)-based metalloradical system can efficiently activate unsymmetrical methyl phenyl diazomalonate (MPDM) with effective differentiation of the two ester groups for asymmetric cyclopropanation, enabling stereoselective construction of 1,1-cyclopropanediesters bearing two contiguous chiral centers, including all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center. The Co(II)-catalyzed asymmetric cyclopropanation, which operates at room temperature without slow addition of the diazo compound, is generally applicable to broad-ranging olefins and tolerates various functionalities, providing a streamlined synthesis of chiral 1,1-cyclopropanediesters in high yields with both high diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity. Combined computational and experimental studies support the underlying stepwise radical mechanism for Co(II)-catalyzed cyclopropanation. In addition to functioning as 1,3-dipoles for forming five-membered structures, enantioenriched (E)-1,1-cyclopropanediesters serve as useful building blocks for stereoselective synthesis of different cyclopropane derivatives. In addition, the enantioenriched (E)-1,1-cyclopropanediesters can be stereoselectively converted to (Z)-diastereomers.

Abstract
A Lewis acid catalyzed annulation reaction via arene functionalization of nitrosoarenes and C-C cleavage of (epoxy)styrene to provide arylquinolines is reported. The Lewis acid catalyst altered the annulation pattern providing arylquinolines instead of oxazolidines. The reaction with styrene resulted in a mixture of 2,4-diarylquinoline and 4-arylquinoline, while only 3-arylquinoline was formed from the reaction of epoxystyrene.

Abstract
An efficient and practical approach for the synthesis of substituted benzannulated seven-membered O-heterocycles from cyclopropane derivatives is described. The transformation proceeds via Lewis acid mediated ring opening of cyclopropanes followed by a concomitant 7-endo-tet cyclization to furnish the 4-benzoyl-3,4-dihydrobenzo[b]oxepin-5(2H)-one derivatives in excellent yields (up to 92%). This potentially general method is featured by its high atom economy, broad substrate scope, and mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the representative products exhibited selective antifungal activity in vitro against the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. Therefore, the present reaction will be useful for the development of novel antifungal therapeutic reagents.

Abstract
A 1,3-aminothiolation was realized by reacting 2-substituted cyclopropane 1,1-dicarboxylates with sulfonamides and N-(arylthio)succinimides. Under Sn(OTf)2 catalysis the transformation proceeded smoothly to the corresponding ring-opened products bearing the sulfonamide in the 1-position next to the donor and the arylthio residue in the 3-position next to the acceptor. The procedure was extended to the corresponding selenium analogues by employing N-(phenylseleno)succinimides as an electrophilic selenium source.

Abstract
Aerobic copper(II)-catalyzed tandem ring opening and oxidative C-H alkylation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with bisaryl hydrazones is accomplished to produce tetrahydropyridazines, in which copper(II) plays dual role as a Lewis acid as well as redox catalyst. The reaction is stereospecific, and optically active cyclopropanes can be reacted with high optical purities (89-98% enantiomeric excess). The substrate scope, functional group tolerance, dual role of the copper(II) catalyst, and the use of air as an oxidant are the important practical features. A product bearing a 3-bromoaryl group can be subjected to Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling with boronic acid in high yield.

Abstract
The first enantioselective copper catalyzed cyclopropanation of internal olefins with diazomalonates is reported. This process provides a new method for the synthesis of chiral 1,1-cyclopropane diesters. With a chiral bi-side arm bisoxazoline-copper(I) complex, the reaction performed well over a series of substrates, giving the desired products in good yields (up to 95%) and excellent enantioselectivities (90-95% ee).

Abstract
Hydrogen bond assisted ortho-selective C(sp2)-H amination of nitrosoarenes and subsequent α-C(sp3)-H functionalization of aliphatic amines is achieved under metal-free conditions. The annulation of nitrosoarenes and 2-hydroxy-C-nitroso compounds with N-heterocycles provides a facile excess to a wide range of biologically relevant ring-fused benzimidazoles and structurally novel polycyclic imidazoles, respectively. Nucleophilic aromatic hydrogen substitution (SNArH) was found to be preferred over classical SNAr reaction during the C(sp2)-H amination of halogenated nitrosoarenes.

Abstract
A catalytic [3 + 1]-annulation reaction between cyclopropane 1,1-diester and aromatic amine is developed based on the relay catalysis strategy. Lewis acid-catalyzed nucleophilic ring opening of cyclopropane 1,1-diester with aromatic amine and (hypo)iodite-catalyzed C-N bond formation are combined successfully in one reaction. Using this reaction, biologically important azetidines and tetrahydroquinolines can be prepared directly.

Abstract
Donor–acceptor (DA) cyclopropanes are extensively studied and well established as building blocks for the synthesis of highly substituted carbo- and heterocyclic compounds. Despite of similar ring strain, the homologous DA cyclobutanes were long ignored. This personal account details our group's research towards the application of DA cyclobutanes in cycloaddition chemistry.
