β-Pyrrolopyrazino Annulated Corroles via a Pictet–Spengler Approach

Pictet-Spengler synthesis of twisted quinoline-fused BODIPYs as heavy-atom-free photosensitizers

Singly and doubly quinoline-fused BODIPYs were effectively synthesized through a reaction sequence consisting of the reduction of nitrophenyl-substituted BODIPYs and subsequent Pictet-Spengler cyclization. The combination of the BODIPY core and fused quinoline rings imposed significantly twisted conformations in the quinoline-fused BODIPYs (around 20.0° deviation from coplanarity obtained from X-ray crystal structure analysis). These twisted BODIPYs showed significantly reduced LUMO, redshifted absorption/emission bands, high molar extinction coefficients and satisfactory reactive oxygen species generation efficiency up to 0.56, indicating potential use as heavy-atom-free photosensitizers.

Clauson-Kaas pyrrole synthesis using diverse catalysts: a transition from conventional to greener approach

Pyrrole is an important aromatic heterocyclic scaffold found in many natural products and predominantly used in pharmaceuticals. Continuous efforts are being made to design and synthesize various pyrrole derivatives using different synthetic procedures. Among them, the Clauson-Kaas reaction is a very old and well-known method for synthesizing a large number of N-substituted pyrroles. In recent years, due to global warming and environmental concern, research laboratories and pharmaceutical industries around the world are searching for more environmentally friendly reaction conditions for synthesizing compounds. As a result, this review describes the use of various eco-friendly greener protocols to synthesize N-substituted pyrroles. This synthesis involves the reaction of various aliphatic/aromatic primary amines, and sulfonyl primary amines with 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran in the presence of numerous acid catalysts and transition metal catalysts. The goal of this review is to summarize the synthesis of various N-substituted pyrrole derivatives using a modified Clauson-Kaas reaction under diverse conventional and greener reaction conditions.

PIFA-promoted intramolecular oxidative cyclization of pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-appended porphyrins: an efficient synthesis of meso,β-pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-fused porphyrins

We have developed an efficient protocol for the synthesis of meso,β-pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-fused porphyrin systems 7-9 by PIFA-promoted intramolecular oxidative cyclization of easily accessible meso-pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-appended porphyrins 6a-j. The absorption spectra of meso,β-pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-fused porphyrins 7-9 displayed bathochromic shifted (100-150 nm) and broadened Soret bands and Q bands in addition to intense band near IR region. The indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-fused porphyrin 9bZn with lower fluorescence quantum yield (0.003) and reduced energy gap (∼1.3 eV) was found to sensitize singlet oxygen effectively.

β-Disubstituted silver(III) corroles: Facile synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical redox properties

Facile synthesis of 3,17-disubstituted Ag(III) tritolylcorroles (2-5), R2[TTC]Ag where R = methyl (2), phenyl (3), methyl acrylate (MA) (4) and phenylethynyl (PE) (5) using Pd-catalyzed reactions in good to excellent yields are reported. All synthesized corroles were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry. MA2[TTC]Ag (4) and PE2[TTC]Ag (5) exhibited highly red-shifted electronic spectral bands with considerable broadening due to extended [Formula: see text]-conjugation and electron withdrawing effect of [Formula: see text]-substituents. Geometry optimization of these corroles was performed using density functional theory (DFT). Among all, MA2[TTC]Ag (4) exhibited very high dipole moment (10.31 D) which could be the potential candidate for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. The redox tunability was achieved by substituting electron donating and withdrawing substituents at the [Formula: see text]-positions. Particularly, corroles 4 and 5 exhibited lower HOMO–LUMO gap due to extended [Formula: see text]-conjugation and electron withdrawing [Formula: see text]-substituents.

One-pot access to 2-amino-3-arylbenzofurans: direct entry to polyheterocyclic chemical space

As a means to make new benzofuran-embedded polycyclic structures, we established two efficient one-pot sequential coupling routes to 2-amino-3-arylbenzofurans and 2-amino-3-arylnaphtho[2,1-b]furans. Further ring formation (six- and seven-membered rings) with the resulting amine moiety at the C2 position of benzofurans was realized, leading to further expansion of benzofuran-based chemical space.

Access to Corrole-Appended Persubstituted Benzofurans by a Multicomponent Reaction: The Dual Role of p-Chloranil

A multicomponent reaction among dipyrranes, aryl-propargyl aldehydes, and p-chloranil leading to 10-(benzofuran-2-yl)corroles is described. p-Chloranil was identified as a crucial reagent playing a twofold role: an oxidant taking part in the formation of the corrole macrocycle and a component undergoing heteroannulation to the incipient 10-arylethynylcorrole. A series of corroles bearing persubstituted benzofuran-2-yl moieties have been synthesized, and their fundamental electronic properties have been studied via UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies.

Grafting Copper and Gallium Corroles onto Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Two different copper and gallium arylcorroles have been functionalized using the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction. A further Knoevenagel reaction with cyanoacetic acid was performed on both complexes, affording the desired products with yields above 90 %. The newly synthesized compounds have been thoroughly characterized by a combination of spectroscopic methods, optical analyses, and X-ray crystallography. Moreover, they have been tested as anchoring groups for the hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles. The morphology of the heterogeneous composites has been studied by SEM, EDS and fluorescence microscopy analyses, thus confirming the presence of the corrole macrocycle in the hybrid material.

A Novel Sc(OTf)3 -Catalyzed (2+2+1)-Cycloannulation/Aza-Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Sequence toward Multicyclic 2-Pyrrolines

The rapid assembly of molecular complexity continues to be at the forefront of novel reaction development. In the pursuit of that goal, we herein report a novel Sc(OTf)₃ -catalyzed, one-pot multicomponent reaction that furnishes complex multicyclic 2-pyrrolines with excellent overall yields and perfect diastereocontrol. This process is based on our previously established (2+2+1)-cycloannulation of in situ generated 1-azaallyl cations, 1,3-dicarbonyls and primary amines. The newly formed and highly reactive aminal moiety is readily substituted with indoles and pyrroles both as external and internal π-nucleophiles to provide densely functionalized N-heterocycles with four new σ-bonds and two vicinal quaternary stereogenic centers. In addition, DFT calculations have been conducted to further characterize the intermediate 1-azaallyl cations.

Boroquinol Complexes with Fused Extended Aromatic Backbones: Synthesis and Optical Properties

Boron-based dyes are attractive synthetic targets due to their large variability of absorption and emission wavelengths. Through Pictet-Spengler cyclizations, followed by oxidation, π-extended boroquinols have been synthesized. During optimization of the reaction conditions, an unusual dearylation has been found and mechanistically investigated. For two of the synthesized boroquinols, mechanochromic effects with bathochromic shifts up to 50 nm were found upon grinding.

Strategies for Corrole Functionalization

This review covers the functionalization reactions of meso-arylcorroles, both at the inner core, as well as the peripheral positions of the macrocycle. Experimental details for the synthesis of all known metallocorrole types and for the N-alkylation reactions are presented. Key peripheral functionalization reactions such as halogenation, formylation, carboxylation, nitration, sulfonation, and others are discussed in detail, particularly the nucleophilic aromatic substitution and the participation of corroles in cycloaddition reactions as 2π or 4π components (covering Diels-Alder and 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions). Other functionalizations of corroles include a large diversity of reactions, namely Wittig reactions, reactions with methylene active compounds, formation of amines, amides, and imines, and metal catalyzed reactions. At the final section, the reactions involving oxidation and ring expansion of the corrole macrocycle are described comprehensively.
