Abstract
Procedures for the preparation of transition metal complexes having intact bicyclic cepham or penam systems as ligands have been developed. Starting from readily available 4-azido-2-azetidinones, a synthetic approach has been tuned using a copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition between 3-azido-2-azetinones and alkynes, followed by methylation and transmetalation to Au(I) and Ir(III) complexes from the mesoionic carbene Ag(I) complexes. This methodology was applied to 6-azido penam and 7-azido cepham derivatives to build 6-(1,2,3-triazolyl)penam and 7-(1,2,3-triazolyl)cepham proligands, which upon methylation and metalation with Au(I) and Ir(III) complexes yielded products derived from the coordination of the metal to the penam C6 and cepham C7 positions, preserving intact the bicyclic structure of the penicillin and cephalosporin scaffolds. The crystal structure of complex 28b, which has an Ir atom directly bonded to the intact penicillin bicycle, was determined by X-ray diffraction. This is the first structural report of a penicillin-transition-metal complex having the bicyclic system of these antibiotics intact. The selectivity of the coordination processes was interpreted using DFT calculations.

Abstract
1,2,3-Triazolylidene MIC M-complexes (M = Au, Pd, Pt) having 2-azetidinones and penicillin G substituents at the triazole ring were prepared by CuAAC on 2-azetidinones having a terminal alkyne tethered at N1, followed by alkylation of the 1,2,3-triazole ring and transmetallation [Au(I), Pd(II) and Pt(II)]. The Au-MIC complexes efficiently catalyze the regioselective cycloisomerization of enynes, while the Pt-MIC complexes were efficient catalysts in hydrosilylation reactions.

Abstract
1,2,3-Triazol-5-ylidenes have recently attracted considerable attention as versatile ligands because of their strong electron-donating properties and structural diversities. While some efforts have been devoted to the development of chiral triazolylidene-metal complexes, there is no example achieving asymmetric induction by base-metal complexes with triazolylidene ligands. Herein, we synthesized planar-chiral ferrocene-based triazolylidene copper complexes, which enabled the asymmetric borylation of methyl cinnamate with bis(pinacolato)diboron with good enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes have found wide use as components of homogeneous catalysts. Recent discoveries have, however, shown that metal complexes of such ligands also have huge potential in photochemical research and in the activation of small molecules. We present here three ReI complexes with mesoionic pyridyl-carbene ligands. The complexes display reduction steps which were investigated via UV-vis-NIR-IR spectro-electrochemistry, and these results point toward an EC mechanism. The ReI compounds emit in the visible range in solution at room temperature with excited state lifetimes that are dependent on the substituents of the mesoionic carbenes. These complexes are also potent electrocatalysts for the selective reduction of CO2 to CO. Whereas the substituents on the carbenes have no influence on the reduction potentials, the electrocatalytic efficiency is strongly dependent on the substituents. This fact is likely a result of catalyst instability. The results presented here thus introduce mesoionic carbenes as new potent ligands for the generation of emissive ReI complexes and for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract
A gold(III) complex with the hitherto most electron poor mesoionic carbene ligand is presented. Aqua regia was the oxidizing agent of choice for the synthesis of this unusual organometallic compound. The AuIII complex is redox-rich, and also acts as a catalyst for oxazole formation, delivering selectively a completely different isomer compared to its AuI congener.

Abstract
1,2,3-Triazole-derived mesoionic carbenes (MICs) having a chiral sulfur functional group at the C5 position are easily available through a CuAAC between chiral alkynyl sulfoxides and different azides. The MICs form complexes with several metals (Au, Ag, Ir, Rh, and Ru) that are enantiomerically pure. Moreover, enantiomerically pure MIC sulfinilimines are obtained from the corresponding sulfoxide retaining the chirality. Through this article, the participation of sulfoxide moieties in different catalytic and chirality transfer processes, as well as in discovering mechanistically new processes will be shown. The role of the sulfur chiral moiety in catalytic cycloisomerization and cycloisomerization-dimerization processes using Au-MIC catalysts is dual. The sulfur functional group either stabilizes intermediates in the catalytic cycle, allowing for the reaction to occur or significantly increases the selectivity of the cyclization processes. 1,2,3-Triazole MICs having chiral sulfoxides at C5 are extremely efficient in preparing chiral at the metal complexes by C-H insertion processes. The chiral at the metal half-sandwich complexes, having the enantiopure sulfur chiral group unaltered, experiences different reactions with complete retention of the configuration. Finally, mechanistically new processes, like the desulfinilation of 1,2,3-triazolium salts in Ag-MIC complexes have been uncovered. These still-nascent classes of compounds will offer opportunities for the discovery of novel catalytic applications and to study new mechanistically sound processes.

Abstract
Synthesis and coordination of 4-halo-1,2,3-triazolylidenes have been developed. These novel ligands featured the character with σ-donation at carbon and a σ-hole at the halogen. Halogen bonding was observed by single crystal X-ray diffraction in their coinage metal complexes. The electronic properties of 4-iodo-1,2,3-triazolylidene were studied by both Ir-CO frequencies of the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) and Huynh's electronic parameter (HEP) method, which suggested similar electronic properties to those of imidazolylidenes. During HEP tests, an interesting tunability was observed when different electron donors were employed.

Abstract
Classical carbenes are usually described as neutral compounds featuring a divalent carbon with only six electrons in their valence shell. It was only in 1988 that our group prepared the first isolable example, in which the carbene center was stabilized by a push-pull effect, using a phosphino and a silyl substituent. In the last 30 years, a myriad of acyclic and cyclic push-pull and push-push carbenes, bearing different heteroatom substituents, have been isolated. Among them, the so-called N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which include cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs), are arguably the most popular. They have found a vast number of applications ranging from catalysis to material science, and even in medicine. In this Account, we focus on the synthesis, structure, electronic properties, coordination, and applications of a different class of stable cyclic carbenes, namely, 1 H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidenes. In contrast with NHCs and CAACs, these compounds have no reasonable canonical resonance forms that can be drawn showing a carbene without additional charges. According to the IUPAC, they belong to the family of mesoionic compounds and thus they are named mesoionic carbenes (MICs). In 2010, we prepared the first stable 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene, via a CuAAC reaction, followed by alkylation of the resulting 1,2,3-triazole, and deprotonation. Later, we synthesized more robust N3-arylated counterparts from 1,3-diarylated-1 H-1,2,3-triazolium salts. Both synthetic routes can be carried out in multigram scales, making these MICS readily available. Importantly, MICs do not dimerize which contrasts with NHCs that can give the corresponding Wanzlick-type olefin. This property leads to relaxed steric requirements for their isolation; even C-unsubstituted MICs can be stored for months in the solid state at room temperature. The practicality and easily scalable syntheses of MICs allow for the preparation of polycarbenes, such as bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidenes) (i-bitz), the analogues of the well-known 2,2'-bipyridines (bpy). MIC-transition metal complexes are excellent precatalysts for variety of chemical transformations, which include hydrohydrazination of alkynes, olefin metathesis, reductive formylation of amines with carbon dioxide and diphenylsilane, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of N-heteroarenes in water, cycloisomerization of enynes, asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, and water oxidation (WO) reactions. Besides their catalytic applications, MIC-transition metal complexes have found applications in material sciences as exemplified by the preparation of the first iron(III) complex that is luminescent at room temperature. The peculiar properties of mesoionic triazolylidenes, combined with their enhanced stability, position them as excellent candidates to address some current challenges such as access to high-oxidation-state 3d metal complexes, the stabilization of highly reactive main group elements, the stabilization of nanoparticles, the preparation of efficient catalysts and photosensitizers based on earth-abundant transition metals, and the functionalization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes are a subclass of the family of N-heterocyclic carbenes that generally feature less heteroatom stabilization of the carbenic carbon and hence impart specific donor properties and reactivity schemes when coordinated to a transition metal. Therefore, mesoionic carbenes and their complexes have attracted considerable attention both from a fundamental point of view as well as for application in catalysis and beyond. As a follow-up of an earlier Chemical Reviews overview from 2009, the organometallic chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization is compiled for the 2008-2017 period, including specifically the chemistry of complexes containing 1,2,3-triazolylidenes, 4-imidazolylidenes, and related 5-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteratom stabilization such as (is)oxazolylidenes, pyrrazolylidenes, and thiazolylidenes, as well as pyridylidenes as 6-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization. For each ligand subclass, metalation strategies, electronic and steric properties, and applications, in particular, in metal-mediated catalysis, are compiled. Mesoionic carbenes demonstrate particularly high activity in (water) oxidation, hydrogen transfer reactions, and cyclization reactions. Unique features of these ligands are identified such as their dipolar structure, their specific donor properties, as well as stability aspects of the ligand and the complexes, which provides opportunities for further research.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes (MICs) derived from triazolium salts that contain chiral sulfoxide or sulfoximine functional groups were used to construct enantiopure chiral-at-metal IrIII and RhIII half-sandwich complexes through the synthetic sequence of MIC complexation/C-H aromatic activation. The process was efficient and diastereoselective for the formation of enantiopure five-membered metallacycles. The use of the enantiomers of the chiral sulfur groups allowed us to prepare complexes that had opposite configurations at the metal center. Complete retention of the configuration at the metal center was observed during the formation of cationic IrIII complexes and upon insertion of alkynes into the IrIII -C bond, as demonstrated by a combined circular dichroism/X-ray study. These results point to a vicinal-assisted SN 1-like mechanism.

Abstract
An unprecedented stereoselective domino reaction of 1,6-enynes with an aryl ring at C3-C4 in the presence of gold(I) catalysts at low temperature is described. This process involves a novel 5-exo-dig cycloisomerization-dimerization sequence to afford formal Diels-Alder adducts that undergo a smooth gold-catalyzed double bond migration at room temperature. In addition, the first examples of the gold mesoionic carbene mediated [2+2+2] cycloaddition of these enynes with benzaldehyde are reported.

Abstract
Sterically hindered, in situ generated 1,3,4-substituted 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene mesoionic carbenes (MICs) were employed to stabilize a number of aryl- and heteroaryldihaloboranes, as well as the first MIC-supported diborane. Reduction of borane adducts of the 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3-methyl-4-tert-butyl-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene ligand with KC8 in non-coordinating solvents led to intramolecular C-H- and, C-C-activation at an isopropyl residue of the supporting ligand. DFT calculations showed that each of these activation reactions proceeds via a different isomer of a borylene intermediate.

Abstract
An NMR comparative study of 1,2,3-triazole and triazolium anion recognition units containing sulfoxide, sulfone, and sulfoximine groups at C4 unveils an enhancement in binding ability up to ≈1 kcal/mol in acetone-d6 correlated with a theoretical increase of H5 acidity. DFT calculations provide insight into binding modes in line with experimental data for these receptors.
