Abstract
The asymmetric hydroaminocarbonylation of olefins represents a straightforward approach for the synthesis of enantioenriched amides, but is hampered by the necessity to employ CO gas, often at elevated pressures. We herein describe, as an alternative, an enantioselective hydrocarbamoylation of alkenes leveraging dual copper hydride and palladium catalysis to enable the use of readily available carbamoyl chlorides as a practical carbamoylating reagent. The protocol is applicable to various types of olefins, including alkenyl arenes, terminal alkenes, and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes. Substrates containing a diverse range of functional groups as well as heterocyclic substructures undergo functionalization to provide α- and β-chiral amides in good yields and with excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Transition metal catalysis is of utmost importance for the development of sustainable processes in academia and industry. The activity and selectivity of metal complexes are typically the result of the interplay between ligand and metal properties. As the ligand can be chemically altered, a large research focus has been on ligand development. More recently, it has been recognized that further control over activity and selectivity can be achieved by using the "second coordination sphere", which can be seen as the region beyond the direct coordination sphere of the metal center. Hydrogen bonds appear to be very useful interactions in this context as they typically have sufficient strength and directionality to exert control of the second coordination sphere, yet hydrogen bonds are typically very dynamic, allowing fast turnover. In this review we have highlighted several key features of hydrogen bonding interactions and have summarized the use of hydrogen bonding to program the second coordination sphere. Such control can be achieved by bridging two ligands that are coordinated to a metal center to effectively lead to supramolecular bidentate ligands. In addition, hydrogen bonding can be used to preorganize a substrate that is coordinated to the metal center. Both strategies lead to catalysts with superior properties in a variety of metal catalyzed transformations, including (asymmetric) hydrogenation, hydroformylation, C-H activation, oxidation, radical-type transformations, and photochemical reactions.

Abstract
Herein, we report a practical method for efficient asymmetric hydrogenation of β-aryl alkylidene malonates. With a site-specifically tailored chiral spiro iridium catalyst, a series of β-aryl alkylidene malonate esters were hydrogenated to afford chiral malonate esters with good to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) and high turnover numbers (up to 19000). The results showed that installing an ester group in α,β-unsaturated carboxylic esters significantly increased the efficiency of their asymmetric hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract
Noncovalent interactions are ubiquitous in nature and are responsible for the precision control in enzyme catalysis via the cooperation of multiple active sites. Inspired by this principle, noncovalent interaction-assisted transition metal catalysis has emerged recently as a powerful tool and has attracted intense interest. However, it is still highly desirable to develop efficient and operationally convenient ligands along this line with new structural motifs. Based on the specific nature of hydrogen bonding and ion pairing interactions, we developed a series of noncovalent interaction-assisted chiral ferrocenyl phosphine ligands, including Zhaophos, Wudaphos, and miscellaneous SPO-Wudaphos. Due to the assistance of noncovalent interactions, this catalytic mode is capable of achieving transition metal catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation and other transformations with remarkable improvement of reactivity and selectivity. In some specific challenging cases, this probably represents one of the most productive methods. Moreover, these ligands are easily prepared, air stable, and highly tunable, meeting the requirements of industrial application. In this Account, we give a concise review of recent advances in asymmetric catalysis. By means of hydrogen bonding interactions, Rh- and Ir-Zhaophos complexes exhibited excellent activities and enantioselectivities in asymmetric hydrogenation of a wide range of substrates: C═C bonds of substituted conjugate alkenes with neutral hydrogen bond acceptors, including nitro groups, carbonyl groups (ketones, esters, amides, maleinimides, and anhydrides), ethers, and sulfones; C═N bonds of substituted iminium salts with chloride as an anionic hydrogen bond acceptor, including N-H imines and cyclic imines; N-heteroaromatic compounds with HCl as an additive, including unprotected quinolines, isoquinolines, and indoles; carbocation of substituted oxocarbenium ions. By means of ion pairing interactions, Rh-Wudaphos complexes enabled the catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of α-substituted unsaturated carboxylic acids, carboxy-directed α,α-disubstituted terminal olefins, and sodium α-arylethenylsulfonates. Rh-SPO-Wudaphos utilized both hydrogen bonding and ion pairing interactions in asymmetric hydrogenation of α-substituted unsaturated carboxylic acids and phosphonic acids. In addition, Zhaophos has achieved highly selective intramolecular reductive amination and inter- and intramolecular asymmetric decarboxylative allylation. Investigations into mechanism implied that noncovalent interactions were involved in the catalytic cycle and played a critical role for both high reactivity and selectivity. Notably, a rare ionic hydrogenation pathway has been proposed in some cases. Furthermore, these catalytic systems have been used in the gram-scale synthesis of natural products and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Trifunctional MAP-based chiral phosphines were tested as new ligands in a Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation, demonstrating fast and enantiodivergent catalysis. The palladium complexes of representative ligands by X-ray analysis revealed a novel mode of P,N-coordination of the ligand to the palladium center, which may contribute to switching the sense of the asymmetric induction via combined steric and tunable H-bonding interactions between the metal complex and the substrates.

Abstract
The direct enantioselective copper hydride (CuH)-catalyzed synthesis of β-chiral amides from α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids and secondary amines under mild reaction conditions is reported. The method utilizes readily accessible carboxylic acids and tolerates a variety of functional groups in the β-position including several heteroarenes. A subsequent iridium-catalyzed reduction to γ-chiral amines can be performed in the same flask without purification of the intermediate amides.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective hydrogenation of exocyclic α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds catalyzed by Rh/bisphosphine-thiourea (ZhaoPhos) has been developed, giving the corresponding α-chiral cyclic lactones, lactams and ketones with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 99% ee). Remarkably, the hydrogen bond between the substrate and the catalyst plays a critical role in this transformation. The synthetic utility of this protocol has been demonstrated by efficient synthesis of chiral 3-(4-fluorobenzyl)piperidine, a key chiral fragment of bioactive molecules.

Abstract
A straightforward method to prepare 1,5-benzothiazepines was reported. Catalyzed by a Rh/Zhaophos complex, unsaturated cyclic NH lactams with a medium-size ring were hydrogenated smoothly, giving remarkably high enantioselectivities. The sulfur atom in the substrates did not bring an inhibition which was observed with commercially available bisphosphine ligands. This method was successfully applied in the scale-up synthesis of (R)-(-)-thiazesim.

Abstract
The development of universal catalyst systems that enable efficient, selective, and straightforward chemical transformations is of immense scientific importance. Here we develop a domino process comprising three consecutive reaction steps based on the strategy of supramolecular substrate recognition. This approach provides valuable β-aryl aldehydes from readily accessible α-alkynoic acids and arenes under mild reaction conditions, employing a supramolecular Rh catalyst containing an acylguanidine-bearing phosphine ligand. Furthermore, the synthesis of a key intermediate of Avitriptan using this protocol is accomplished. The first step of the reaction sequence is proved to be the regioselective hydroformylation of α-alkynoic acids. Remarkably, molecular recognition of the ligand and the substrate via hydrogen bonding plays a key role in this step. Control experiments indicate that the reaction further proceeds via 1,4-addition of an arene nucleophile to the unsaturated aldehyde intermediate and subsequent decarboxylation.

Abstract
Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral substituted benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxides was successfully developed, affording various chiral 2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxides with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and >99% ee). In particular, for challenging substrates, such as aryl substituted substrates with sterically hindered groups and alkyl substituted substrates, the reaction proceeded smoothly in our catalytic system with excellent results. The gram-scale asymmetric hydrogenation proceeded well with 99% yield and 99% ee in the presence of 0.02 mol% (S/C = 5000) catalyst loading. The possible hydrogen-bonding interaction between the substrate and the ligand may play an important role in achieving high reactivity and excellent enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of various benzo[ b][1,4]dioxine derivatives was successfully developed to prepare chiral 2-substituted 2,3-dihydrobenzo[1,4]dioxane derivatives using ZhaoPhos and N-methylation of ZhaoPhos ligands with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield, >99% enantiomeric excess (ee), turnover number (TON) = 24 000). Moreover, this asymmetric hydrogenation methodology, as the key step with up to 10 000 TON, was successfully applied to develop highly efficient synthetic routes for the construction of some important biologically active molecules, such as MKC-242, WB4101, BSF-190555, and ( R)-doxazosin·HCl.

Abstract
An enantioselective synthesis of β-chiral amides through asymmetric and redox-neutral hydroamidation of enals is reported. In this reaction, a chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst reacts with enals to generate the homoenolate intermediate. Upon highly enantioselective β-protonation through proton-shuttle catalysis, the resulting azolium intermediate reacts with imidazole to yield the key β-chiral acyl species. This transient intermediate provides access to diversified β-chiral carbonyl derivatives, such as amides, hydrazides, acids, esters, and thioesters. In particular, β-chiral amides can be prepared in excellent yield and ee (40 chiral amides, up to 95 % yield and 99 % ee). This modular strategy overcomes the challenge of disruption of the highly selective proton-shuttling process by basic amines.

Abstract
The first asymmetric hydrogenation of β-cyanoacrylate esters has been developed to furnish chiral β-cyano esters with excellent yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Notably, the catalyst with a single H-bond donor in a precise position performed better than that with double H-bond donors.
With the assistance of hydrogen bonds, the first asymmetric hydrogenation of β-cyanocinnamic esters is developed, affording chiral β-cyano esters with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee). This novel methodology provides an efficient and concise synthetic route to chiral GABA-derivatives such as (S)-Pregabalin, (R)-Phenibut, (R)-Baclofen. Interestingly, in this system, the catalyst with a single H-bond donor performs better than that with double H-bond donors, which is a novel discovery in the metalorganocatalysis area.

Abstract
Asymmetric hydrogenation of various 3-substituted maleic anhydrides catalyzed by Rh/bisphosphine-thiourea (ZhaoPhos) under mild conditions was successfully developed. A wide range of 3-alkyl and 3-aryl maleic anhydrides were hydrogenated well to provide the desired products 3-substituted succinic anhydrides in one hour with excellent results (full conversions, up to 99% yield, 99% ee, 3000 TON). Importantly, we developed a creative and efficient synthetic route to construct the key intermediate of the hypoglycemic drug mitiglinide through our catalytic system.

Abstract
Rhodium porphyrin catalyzed hydrogenation of the aliphatic carbon-carbon σ-bond of [2.2]paracyclophane with water has been examined with a variety of tetraarylporphyrins and axial ligands. Mechanistic investigations show that RhIII(ttp)H, which can be derived from the reaction of [RhII(ttp)]2 with water without a sacrificial reductant, plays an important role in promoting bimetallic reductive elimination to give the hydrogenation product.

Abstract
A highly efficient asymmetric hydrogenation of azepine/oxazepine-type seven-member cyclic imine hydrochlorides was successfully developed using Rh/bisphosphine-thiourea ligand ZhaoPhos, affording various chiral seven-member cyclic amines with full conversions, high yields, and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 96% yield, >99% ee). Additionally, this asymmetric hydrogenation can proceed well on gram scale with excellent ee value. Moreover, control experimental results displayed that the anion-bonding interaction between the chloride ion of the substrate and thiourea motif of the ZhaoPhos played an important role to obtain excellent enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Abstract
Asymmetric catalysis has become an indispensable and productive field within the Chinese organic chemistry society. The design of chiral ligands is one of the most prominent research areas in this field. Since the late 1990s, Chinese organic chemists have developed numerous chiral ligands possessing novel chiral skeletons and design concepts. Some of these ligands have been widely adopted and can be regarded as ‘privileged ligand’, which have shown excellent performance in many asymmetric catalytic reactions. In this review, we provide an overview of the chiral ligands designed by Chinese scientists with the aim of promoting the development of this area in China and with the hope of encouraging more scientists across the world to use these ligands when designing asymmetric reactions.
