Interrupted reactions in chemical synthesis

Interrupted reactions reroute established processes to new and often unanticipated end points. Of particular interest are the cases in which a known reactive intermediate takes on a new reaction pathway, either because this pathway is lower in energy or because the conventional pathway is no longer available. Through analysis of documented cases, we aim to dissect the known interrupted reactions and trace their mechanistic origins. As new chemical processes are being discovered at a seemingly ever-increasing pace, it is likely that new interrupted reactions will continue to emerge. Our hope is that the cases considered in this Review will help identify new classes of these fascinating transformations.

Visible-Light-Mediated Organocatalyzed Thiol-Ene Reaction Initiated by a Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

A convenient method for performing a thiol-ene reaction is described. The reaction is performed under blue-light irradiation and catalyzed by photoactive Lewis basic molecules such as acridine orange or naphthalene-fused N-acylbenzimidazole. It is believed that the process is initiated by a proton-coupled electron transfer process within the complex between the thiol and the Lewis basic catalyst.

Recent Advances in RAFT Polymerization: Novel Initiation Mechanisms and Optoelectronic Applications

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) is considered to be one of most famous reversible deactivation radical polymerization protocols. Benefiting from its living or controlled polymerization process, complex polymeric architectures with controlled molecular weight, low dispersity, as well as various functionality have been constructed, which could be applied in wide fields, including materials, biology, and electrology. Under the continuous research improvement, main achievements have focused on the development of new RAFT techniques, containing fancy initiation methods (e.g., photo, metal, enzyme, redox and acid), sulfur-free RAFT system and their applications in many fields. This review summarizes the current advances in major bright spot of novel RAFT techniques as well as their potential applications in the optoelectronic field, especially in the past a few years.
