Abstract
A catalytic enantioselective Friedel-Crafts reaction of various heteroaromatic compounds with glyoxals has been developed. In the presence of a chiral oxazaborolidinium ion catalyst, the reaction provided chiral α-hydroxyketones in high yield (up to 96%) with excellent enantioselectivity (up to >99% ee). The synthetic utility of this method was illustrated by conversion of the products to various derivatives such as 1,2-diol and β-amino alcohol.

Abstract
A novel efficient HFIP-catalyzed synthesis of structurally diverse 2,2-difluoro-3-hydroxy-1,4-diketone derivatives from readily available glyoxal monohydrates and difluoroenoxysilanes is described. This convenient protocol is induced by the distinctive fluorine effect of the reactants and the fluoroalcohol catalyst, which represents the first application of fluoroalcohol catalysis in a Mukaiyama aldol reaction.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed annulation of 3-aryl-2H-azirines with 2-naphthols has been developed for the rapid assembly of C-3-naphthol-substituted benzo[e]indoles in one pot. This cascade reaction was realized through dearomatic nucleophilic ring opening of azirine, intramolecular cyclization, and oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling to furnish the important unreported π-expanded naphthol/benzo[e]indole biaryls.

Abstract
The first stereoselective propargylic dearomatization of 2-naphthol derivatives is reported using a chiral CuII-L10 complex. The reaction shows chemodivergent reactivity and produced propargyl dearomatization and etherification product for differently substituted 2-naphthols. Both the reactions generate the desired products in high yields with excellent chemo- and stereoselectivities (up to 99% ee, dr = 9:1) by using only 2 mol % catalyst loading. Dearomatization products contain a contiguous all-carbon quaternary-tertiary stereocenter and a terminal alkyne functionality.

Abstract
Naphthols, hydroxyindoles and an activated phenol are reacted with differently substituted (E)-nitrobut-1-en-3-ynes using the commercially available Rawal's chiral squaramide. The corresponding β-nitroalkynes were obtained with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Moreover, dihydronaphthofurans can be accessed via silver catalysed cyclization in a tandem one-pot procedure, with high preservation of the optical purity.

Abstract
We have developed a Brønsted acid catalysed highly ortho-selective functionalization of free phenols with readily available N,O-acetals under mild conditions, furnishing various corresponding aminomethylated phenol products in moderate to excellent yields. The salient features of this transformation include mild conditions, good substrate scope, excellent ortho-selectivity, high efficiency, and ease of further transformation.

Abstract
The synthesis of enantiomerically pure benzoins by hydrogenation of readily available benzils has been long thwarted by their base-sensitivity. We show here that an iron(II) hydride complex catalyzes the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of benzils from 2-propanol. When strictly base-free conditions are granted, excellent enantioselectivity is achieved even with o-substituted substrates, which are particularly challenging to prepare with other methods. Hence, under optimized reaction conditions, chiral benzoins were prepared in good yields (up to 83%) and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 98% ee) in short reaction times (30-75 min). Also, this work confirms that both enantiomers of the benzoin products can be accessed when a metal catalyst is used, which is a clear advantage over enzymatic methods.

Abstract
Hydroxyl alkylation of indoles by Friedel-Crafts reaction with a carbonyl compound is a useful strategy. However, the reaction was restricted to ketones due to the easy formation of a bisindole byproduct. Therefore, hydroxyl alkylation of an aldehyde with indole is confronted with great challenges. Here, we report an efficient strategy for asymmetric hydroxyl alkylation of 2-substituted indoles with aldehydes under 0.1 mol% chiral phosphoric acid. A series of α-hydroxyl ketones were obtained in high yields (up to 99%) and good enantioselectivities (up to 97%).

Abstract
H2SO4-mediated one-pot stereocontrolled (4 + 2) annulation of 4-alkenols and oxygenated naphthalenes provided tetanthrenes in CH2Cl2 at 25 °C for 10 h. The use of various Brønsted acids or Lewis acids was investigated for a facile and efficient transformation. A plausible mechanism has been proposed.
