Synthesis of Hydrazide-Containing Chroman-2-ones and Dihydroquinolin-2-ones via Photocatalytic Radical Cascade Reaction of Aroylhydrozones

Visible light driven photoredox/nickel-catalyzed stereoselective synthesis of Z- or E-vinyl thioethers from thiosilane and terminal alkynes

A new method for the synthesis of anti-Markovnikov Z- or E-vinyl thioethers from thiosilane and terminal alkynes under visible-light-induced photoredox/nickel dual catalysis conditions is described. With a judicious choice of a simple nickel catalyst and a ligand, this strategy enables efficient and divergent access to both Z- or E-vinyl thioethers from the same set of simple starting materials. Notably, the approach is free of odorous thiol and has excellent compatibility with functional groups and substrate scope.

Iodine-mediated electrochemical C(sp3)-H cyclization: the synthesis of quinazolinone-fused N-heterocycles

An efficient iodine-mediated electrochemical C(sp³)-H cyclization was developed under mild conditions. A variety of functionalized quinazolinone-fused N-heterocycles can be obtained with good to excellent yields by virtue of this method. The reaction features a broad substrate scope and scalability, and is metal-free and chemical oxidant-free.

Ru-NHC-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation of 2-Quinolones to Chiral 3,4-Dihydro-2-Quinolones

Direct enantioselective hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds to generate chiral three-dimensional motifs is one of the most straightforward and important approaches in synthetic chemistry. We realized the Ru(II)-NHC-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 2-quinolones under mild reaction conditions. Alkyl-, aryl- and halogen-substituted optically active dihydro-2-quinolones were obtained in high yields with moderate to excellent enantioselectivities. The reaction provides an efficient and atom-economic pathway to construct simple chiral 3,4-dihydro-2-quinolones. The desired products could be further reduced to tetrahydroquinolines and octahydroquinolones.

Recent Advances on Photoinduced Cascade Strategies for the Synthesis of N-Heterocycles

Over the last decade, visible-light photocatalysis has proved to be a powerful tool for the construction of N-heterocyclic frameworks, important constituents of natural products, insecticides, pharmacologically relevant therapeutic agents and catalysts. This account highlights recent developments and established methods towards the photocatalytic cascades for preparation of different classes of N-heterocycles, giving emphasis on our contribution to the field.

Synthesis of Chiral Amines by C–C Bond Formation with Photoredox Catalysis

Chiral amines are key substructures of biologically active natural products and drug candidates. The advent of photoredox catalysis has changed the way synthetic chemists think about building these substructures, opening new pathways that were previously unavailable. Visible-Light-Mediated α-Amino Alkylation of Azomethine Imines: An Approach to N-(β-Aminoalkyl)pyrazolidinones

Herein, a mild and robust photocatalytic protocol for the combination of amino and pyrazolidinone functionalities through a radical α-amino alkylation of azomethine iminium ions is demonstrated. This method presents a high functional group tolerance providing direct access to a large family of N-(β-aminoalkyl)pyrazolidinones in good to excellent yields, including the late-stage incorporation of the pyrazolidinone moiety to pharmaceutical ingredients. We propose a plausible scenario for the C-C bond-forming step which involves radical addition followed by a spin-center-shift event.

Exploiting single-electron transfer in Lewis pairs for catalytic bond-forming reactions

A single-electron transfer (SET) between tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (B(C₆F₅)₃) and N,N-dialkylanilines is reported, which is operative via the formation of an electron donor–acceptor (EDA) complex involving π-orbital interactions as a key intermediate under dark conditions or visible-light irradiation depending on the structure of the aniline derivatives. This inherent SET in the Lewis pairs initiates the generation of the corresponding α-aminoalkyl radicals and their additions to electron-deficient olefins, revealing the ability of B(C₆F₅)₃ to act as an effective one-electron redox catalyst.

Designing Cross-Coupling Reactions using Aryl(trialkyl)silanes

Organo(trialkyl)silanes have several advantages, including high stability, low toxicity, good solubility, easy handling, and ready availability compared with heteroatom-substituted silanes. However, methods for the cross-coupling of organo(trialkyl)silanes are limited, most probably because of their exceeding robustness. Thus, a practical method for the cross-coupling of organo(trialkyl)silanes has been a long-standing challenging research target. This article discusses how aryl(trialkyl)silanes can be used in cross-coupling reactions. A pioneering example is Cu^II catalytic conditions with the use of electron-accepting aryl- or heteroaryl(triethyl)silanes and aryl iodides. The reaction forms biaryls or teraryls. This design concept can be extended to Pd/Cu^II -catalyzed cross-coupling polymerization reactions between such silanes and aryl bromides or chlorides and to Cu^I -catalyzed alkylation using alkyl halides.

C(sp2)–H functionalization of aldehyde-derived hydrazones via a radical process

This review is focused on the recent advances in the C(sp²)–H functionalization of aldehyde-derived hydrazones via a radical process. Diverse substituted hydrazones including N-heterocycles are afforded under mild conditions with excellent selectivities. In general, an aminyl radical as the key intermediate is involved during the reaction process.

Synthesis of cyclohexylidenehydrazine-fused polycyclics via a photocatalytic radical cascade reaction of 2-ethynylaldehyde hydrazones

A general and efficient visible-light photoredox-catalyzed cascade annulation of 2-ethynylaldehyde hydrazones with α-bromo-carbonyls for the synthesis of various cyclohexylidenehydrazine-fused polycyclic compounds is described.
