Abstract
We developed a pyridine-catalyzed annulation of diaryl cyclopropenone with bromomethyl carbonyl compounds leading to 5-carbonyl furan-2(5H)-ones. Pyridinium, derived from the reaction of bromomethyl carbonyl and pyridine, triggered the reaction by the inter-molecular Michael addition to cyclopropenone. This procedure was sensitive neither to air nor moisture and proceeded at room temperature with broad substrate scopes and good functional group tolerance in moderate-to-good yields. As such, it represents a facile and practical pathway leading to 5-carbonyl furan-2(5H)-one derivatives.

Abstract
We herein report a phosphine-catalyzed (3 + 2) annulation of cyclopropenones with a wide variety of electrophilic π systems, including aldehydes, ketoesters, imines, isocyanates, and carbodiimides, offering products of butenolides, butyrolactams, maleimides, and iminomaleimides, respectively, in high yields with broad substrate scope. An α-ketenyl phosphorous ylide is validated as the key intermediate, which undergoes preferential catalytic cyclization with aldehydes rather than stoichiometric Wittig olefinations. This phosphine-catalyzed activation of cyclopropenones thus supplies a versatile C3 synthon for formal cycloadditon reactions.

Abstract
A new class of CO-releasing molecules, M-CPOnes, was prepared combining cyclopropenone-based ligands for CO release with the modular scaffold of transition metal complexes. In proof-of-concept studies, M-CPOnes based on ZnII, FeII and CoII are stable in the dark but undergo light-triggered CO release with the cyclopropenone substituents and metal ions enabling tuning of the photophysical properties. Furthermore, the choice of metal allows the use of different spectroscopic methods to monitor photodecarbonylation from fluorescence spectroscopy to UV/vis spectroscopy and paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy. The modularity of M-CPOnes from the metal ion to the cyclopropenone substitution and potential for further functionalisation of the ligand make M-CPOnes appealing for tailored functionality in applications.

Abstract
An unprecedented Rh(III)-catalyzed [3+3]-spiroannulation of ketimines with cyclopropenones to access spiro[4,5]dienones has been developed. Sequential C-H/C-C bond activation and subsequent nucleophilic addition are disclosed in this process. This procedure represents the first example of the construction of spirolactams utilising cyclopropenones as 3C synthons. The remarkable advantages of this protocol are excellent chemo- and regio-selectivity, wide functional group tolerance, high reaction yields, and tolerance towards H2O.

Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric variants for functional group transformations based on carbon–carbon bond activation still remain elusive. Herein we present an unprecedented palladium-catalyzed (3 + 2) spiro-annulation merging C(sp2)–C(sp2) σ bond activation and click desymmetrization to form synthetically versatile and value-added oxaspiro products. The operationally straightforward and enantioselective palladium-catalyzed atom-economic annulation process exploits a TADDOL-derived bulky P-ligand bearing a large cavity to control enantioselective spiro-annulation that converts cyclopropenones and cyclic 1,3-diketones into chiral oxaspiro cyclopentenone–lactone scaffolds with good diastereo- and enantio-selectivity. The click-like reaction is a successful methodology with a facile construction of two vicinal carbon quaternary stereocenters and can be used to deliver additional stereocenters during late-state functionalization for the synthesis of highly functionalized or more complex molecules. An unprecedented palladium-catalyzed (3 + 2) spiro-annulation merging C–C bond activation and desymmetrization was developed for the enantioselective construction of synthetically versatile and value-added oxaspiro products with up to 95% ee.![]()

Abstract
The development of innovative strategies for the synthesis of N-heterocyclic compounds is an important topic in organic synthesis. Ring expansion methods to form large N-heterocycles often involve the cycloaddition of strained aza rings with π bonds. However, in some cases such strategies suffer from some limitations owing to the difficulties in controlling the regioselectivity and the accessibility of specific π-bond synthons. Here, we report the development of a general ring expansion strategy that involves a formal cross-dimerization between three-membered aza heterocycles and three- and four-membered-ring ketones through synergistic bimetallic catalysis. These formal cross-dimerizations of two different strained rings are efficient and scalable, and provide a straightforward and broadly applicable means of assembling diverse N-heterocycles, such as 3-benzazepinones, dihydropyridinones and uracils, which are versatile units in numerous drugs and biologically active compounds. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the C-C bond of strained ring ketones is first cleaved by the Pd0 species during the reaction.

Abstract
γ-Butenolides are fundamental frameworks found in many naturally occurring compounds, and they exhibit tremendous biological activities. γ-Butenolides also have proven their potential as useful synthetic intermediates in the total synthesis of natural compounds. Over the years, many γ-butenolide natural products have been isolated, having exocyclic γ-δ unsaturation in their structure. These natural products are collectively referred to as γ-alkylidenebutenolides. Considering the different biological profiles and wide-ranging structural diversity of the optically active γ-butenolide, the development of synthetic strategies for assembling such challenging scaffolds has attracted significant attention from synthetic chemists in recent times. In this report, a brief discussion will be provided to address isolation, biogenesis, and current state-of-the-art synthetic protocols for such molecules. This report aims to focus on synthetic strategies for γ-butenolides from 2010-2020 with a particular emphasis on γ-alkylidenebutenolides and related molecules. Metal-mediated catalytic transformation and organocatalysis are the two main reaction types that have been widely used to access such molecules. Mechanistic considerations, enantioselective synthesis, and practical applications of the reported procedures are also taken into consideration.

Abstract
A general method to synthesize substituted butenolides from hydroxymethylcyclopropenones is reported. Functionalized cyclopropenones undergo ring-opening reactions with catalytic amounts of phosphine, forming reactive ketene ylides. These intermediates can be trapped by pendant hydroxy groups to afford target butenolide scaffolds. The reaction proceeds efficiently in diverse solvents and with low catalyst loadings. Importantly, the cyclization is tolerant of a broad range of functional groups, yielding a variety of α- and γ-substituted butenolides.

Abstract
An unprecedented Ag-catalyzed [3 + 2]-annulation of cyclopropenones and DMF via C-C bond cleavage is disclosed. This protocol exhibited excellent chemo- and regio-selectivity, and tolerated various functional groups. More importantly, DMF served as the C═O bond in the cycloaddition reaction, providing an efficient way to construct γ-aminobutenolides. In addition, transesterification reaction occurred when DMF was replaced by esters.
