Mechanistic Investigations of Reactions of the Frustrated Lewis Pairs (Triarylphosphines/B(C6F5)3) with Michael Acceptors

Catalyst-Free Transfer Hydrogenation of Activated Alkenes Exploiting Isopropanol as the Sole and Traceless Reductant

Both metal-catalyzed and organocatalytic transfer hydrogenation reactions are widely employed for the reduction of C=O and C=N bonds. However, selective transfer hydrogenation reactions of C=C bonds remain challenging. Therefore, the chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of olefins under mild conditions and in the absence of metal catalysts, using readily available and inexpensive reducing agents (i.e. primary and secondary alcohols), will mark a significant advancement towards the development of green transfer hydrogenation strategies. Described herein is an unconventional catalyst-free transfer hydrogenation reaction of activated alkenes using isopropanol as an eco-friendly reductant and solvent. The reaction gives convenient synthetic access to a wide range of substituted malonic acid half oxyesters (SMAHOs) in moderate to good yields. Mechanistic investigations point towards an unprecedented hydrogen bond-assisted transfer hydrogenation process.

Bifunctional Solid Catalyst for Organic Reactions in Water: Simultaneous Anchoring of Acetylacetone Ligands and Amphiphilic Ionic Liquid "Tags" by Using a Dihydropyran Linker

The use of solid catalysts to promote organic reactions in water faces the inherent difficulty of the poor mass-transfer efficiency of organic substances in water, which is often responsible for insufficient reaction and low yields. To solve this problem, the solid surface can be manipulated to become amphiphilic. However, the introduction of surfactant-like moieties onto the surface of silica-based materials is not easy. By using an accessible dihydropyran derivative as a grafting linker, a surfactant-combined bifunctional silica-based solid catalyst that possessed an ionic liquid tail and a metal acetylacetonate moiety was prepared through a mild Lewis-acid-catalyzed ring-opening reaction with a thiol-functionalized silica. The surfactant-combined silica-supported metal acetylacetone catalysts displayed excellent catalytic activity in water for a range of reactions. The solid catalyst was also shown to be recyclable, and was reused several times without significant loss in activity.

Surprisingly Flexible Oxonium/Borohydride Ion Pair Configurations

We investigate the geometry of oxonium/borohydride ion pairs [ether-H⁽⁺⁾-ether][LA-H^(-)] with dioxane, THF, and Et₂O as ethers and B(C₆F₅)₃ as the Lewis acid (LA). The question is about possible location of the disolvated proton, [ether-H⁽⁺⁾-ether], with respect to the hydride of the structurally complex [LA-H^(-)] anion. Using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics and a comparison of the potential and free energies of the optimized configurations, we show that herein considered ion pairs are much more flexible geometrically than previously thought. Conformers with different locations of cations with respect to anions are governed by a flat energy-landscape. We found a novel configuration in which oxonium is below [LA-H^(-)], with respect to the direction of borane → hydride vector, and the proton-hydride distance is ca. 6 Å. With calculations of the vibrational spectra of [ether-H⁽⁺⁾-ether][(C₆F₅)₃B-H^(-)] for dioxane, THF, and Et₂O as ethers, we investigate the manifestation of SSLB-type (short, strong, low-barrier) hydrogen bonding in the OHO motif of an oxonium cation.
