Abstract
Herein we report the first synthesis of a tetrabenzotetrathia[8]circulene by a "fold-in" type oxidative fusion reaction. Compared to the pristine tetrathia[8]circulene, the four-fold benzoannulation slightly weakened the antiaromatic character of the central COT ring. The tetrabenzotetrathia[8]circulene exhibited fluorescence at room temperature, and phosphorescence at 77 K with a phosphorescence quantum yield of 11.7%.

Abstract
Penta- and hexa(3,4-thienylene)s were synthesized as a potential precursor for thiophene-containing polyarenes, and the structures were determined via X-ray crystallography. The interconversion of thiophene rings is fast in penta(3,4-thienylene), and slow in hexa(3,4-thienylene) reflecting the activation energy for enantiomerization. Size-dependent bathochromic shifts were observed in UV-vis absorption spectra.

Abstract
This review summarizes the results on the aromaticity of a series of synthesized and hypothetical neutral heterocirculene molecules and their double charged ions. The aromaticity of heterocirculenes is a direct reflection of their electronic structure responsible for the specific optoelectronic and photophysical properties. We show how the presence of a heteroatom in the outer macrocycle affects the aromaticity of hetero[8]circulenes. In addition, we also describe the change in aromaticity and strain energy for a series of the “lower” (n < 8) and “higher” (n > 8) hetero[n]circulenes. It was demonstrated that the loss of planarity with increased strain leads to an increased antiaromaticity of the lower hetero[n]circulenes, whereas higher hetero[n]circulenes demonstrate a more pronounced aromatic nature because of the small departure from planarity of each heteroarene ring in hetero[n]circulene molecule. Finally, we discuss the aromatic nature of the first examples of π-extended hetero[8]circulenes.

Abstract
Carbazole-based aza[7]helicenes and hetero[9]helicenes were successfully obtained via the intramolecular Scholl reaction of 3,6-bis(biphenyl-2-yl)carbazole congeners, while the reaction of 3,6-bis(naphthylphenyl)-appended carbazole gave a triple helicene via an unexpected simultaneous double aryl rearrangement. DFT calculations suggested that the rearrangement proceeded via an arenium cation intermediate. In addition, the reaction of methoxy-appended substrate gave an azahepta[8]circulene via the concurrent C-C bond formation. These helical dyes showed circularly polarized luminescence. The azahepta[8]circulene was further transformed into deeply saddle-distorted dibenzodiaza[8]circulenes as the first example of its solution-based synthesis and unambiguous structural determination.

Abstract
Quadruply BN-fused tetrathia[8]circulenes were synthesized through four-fold electrophilic borylation. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the BN-fused tetrathia[8]circulene with peripheral phenyl groups exhibits crystal polymorphism, in which the circulene core adopts both planar and saddle conformations in the solid state. The experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the weaker aromaticity of azaborine compared with benzene renders the flexibility of the BN-fused tetrathia[8]circulenes.

Abstract
Self-assembly of π-conjugated molecules in solution generally occurs owing to either an enthalpic or an entropic gain; however, designing π-conjugated systems that simultaneously exhibit enthalpically and entropically favorable self-assembly behavior is challenging. Herein, the self-assembly behavior of tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes is disclosed, which is driven by both enthalpy and entropy. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that molecules of these tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes form face-to-face stacked dimers with a 1D columnar structure owing to the circularly arranged dipole moments. Importantly, concentration- and temperature-dependent 1 H NMR spectra revealed that the formation of self-assemblies of tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes in chloroform and methanol is favored by both enthalpic and entropic factors. The unique association behavior is due to the presence of sp2 -hybridized nitrogen atoms, which weakly coordinate to the hydrogen atoms of these solvents and reduce the π-electron density of the circulene cores.

Abstract
Curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exhibit intriguing properties, but their flexible and dynamic nature is often considered to be unfavorable for achieving excellent emission properties. In this study, we prepared tetrathia[8]circulene octaoxides that adopt a negatively curved conformation. We found that these molecules exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) that originates from the restriction of the dynamic motion of their saddle-shaped π-frameworks in the solid and aggregated states.

Abstract
A series of azaperylene derivatives such as monoazaperylene (MAPery), 1,6-diazaperylene (1,6-DiAPery), 1,7-diazaperylene (1,7-DiAPery), 1,12-diazaperylene (1,12-DiAPery), triazaperylene (TriAPery), and tetraazaperylene (TetAPery) was synthesized by changing the position and number of nitrogen atoms at the bay region of a perylene skeleton in 1, 6, 7, and 12 positions. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical measurements suggested that the energies of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) states significantly become stabilized with increasing the number of nitrogen atoms, whereas the estimated HOMO-LUMO gaps approximately remain constant. This result is in good agreement with the absorption and fluorescence spectral measurements. Additionally, these steady-state spectroscopic measurements demonstrate the broadened spectra as compared to pristine perylene (Pery). In photophysical measurements, the fluorescence quantum yields (ΦFL) significantly decreased as the number of nitrogen atoms increased, whereas much enhanced quantum yields and rate constants of internal conversion (ΦIC and kIC) were observed. Especially, the increased kIC values of TriAPery (kIC: ∼108 s-1) and TetAPery (kIC: ∼109 s-1) are much larger than those of diazaperylene and monoazaperylene derivatives (kIC: ∼107 s-1). These photophysical trends were successfully explained by time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations. Finally, the characteristic protonated and deprotonated processes of nitrogen atoms in azaperylenes under acidic conditions were monitored utilizing absorption and fluorescence measurements. The binding constants demonstrate that the nitrogen atoms at 1 and 12 positions of a perylene skeleton are essential for the increased values.

Abstract
Heterocyclic [8]circulenes are an important class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules because of their unique structural properties and promising applications. However, the synthesis of heterocyclic [8]circulenes is still limited and thus is an important synthetic challenge. Here we describe the first example of a π-extended diaza[8]circulene surrounded by and fused with six hexagons and two pentagons, which was successfully synthesized only by a combined in-solution and on-surface synthetic strategy. State-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy with a CO-functionalized tip and density functional theory calculations revealed its planar conformation and unique electronic structure.

Abstract
A series of terrylene derivatives, such as monoazaterrylene (MATerry), 1,6-diazaterrylene (DiATerry) and pristine terrylene (Terry), were synthesized by changing the number of nitrogen atoms at the bay region (1 and 6 positions of the Terry core). The electrochemical measurements suggested that the first one-electron reduction and oxidation potentials became positively shifted with increasing numbers of nitrogen atoms. This agreed with the energies of the corresponding highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) states estimated by DFT methods. In contrast, the HOMO-LUMO gaps approximately remained constant. This trend is quite similar to the spectroscopic behaviors observed by absorption and fluorescence spectra. The solvent polarity-dependent spectroscopic trends of DiATerry suggested the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) characters. The evaluation of the excited-state dynamics in various solvents indicated the electronic configurational changes of the excited states relative to the ground state via the ICT. This was supported by the Lippert-Mataga plots. Finally, the reversible protonation and deprotonation processes were also observed.

Abstract
Magnetically induced current densities have been calculated at the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) level for seven hetero[8]circulenes and their dicationic and dianionic forms. Calculations of the magnetic dipole transition moments have also been carried out at the algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) and the second-order approximate coupled-cluster (CC2) levels. The calculations show that the degree of aromaticity and the size of the magnetic dipole transition moment of the lowest magnetic-dipole allowed excited state are related. We show that neutral hetero[8]circulenes are weakly antiaromatic when the first excited state with a large magnetic dipole transition moment of 10-16 a.u. lies at high energies (∼2.8-3.5 eV). For the dications, this transition often lies at much lower energies. Hetero[8]circulene dications with large magnetic dipole transition moments are strongly antiaromatic. The lowest excited states of the hetero[8]circulene dianions have very small magnetic dipole transition moments implying that they are aromatic.

Abstract
Cu(I), Ag(I), and Au(I) complexes of monophosphine or bisphosphine ligands based on the 3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluorocyclopentene skeleton were synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The electron-withdrawing nature of these polyfluorinated phosphines was experimentally revealed via UV/vis absorption studies and crystal structure analysis. Successful catalytic application of the Au(I) complex for alkyne hydration reactions was investigated.
