Abstract
A mild, regiospecific Gold-Silver bimetallic catalytic system has been devised for the intramolecular hydroacyloxylation and hydroetherification of alkenoic acids and alcohols. This method exhibits precise specificity for the geminal substituted olefinic center and facilitates the synthesis of substituted phthalide and hydroisocoumarin derivatives. This method has been effectively applied for late-state functionalization to produce bioactive natural products such as rumphellaone A, mycophenolate, and (-)-ambrox. The successful gram-scale synthesis of the anticonvulsant, hypnotic drug (±)-ethyl phenyl butyro lactone (EPBL), (±)-Boivinianin A and the ability to synthesize challenging spiro and bicyclic lactone underscores the synthetic potential of this methodology. Mechanistic insights into gold-silver catalyzed lactonization of olefins have also been discussed.

Abstract
The synthetic research for building γ-butyrolactones is being developed due to the high value of lactone skeletons, commonly found in natural products, functional molecules, bioactive agents and pharmaceuticals. However, reported synthetic methods, including harsh conditions, reliance on volatile activating reagents, and using noble metals, remain challenging. In this work, we present an electro-oxidative (3+2) annulation of alkenes with 1,3-diesters, offering an efficient route to γ-butyrolactones. This approach eliminates the need for external oxidants or bases and substrate pre-activation. Mechanistic studies suggest that ferrocene acts as a mediator to activate 1,3-diesters.

Abstract
Lactones represent a class of fundamental structural motifs ubiquitous in nature, holding significance across diverse scientific domains such as pharmaceuticals, natural products, drug discovery, and industry. Despite their simplicity, the synthesis of lactones has garnered considerable interest due to their pivotal roles. Gold, traditionally regarded as a noble metal, has emerged as an efficient catalyst, challenging conventional perceptions. The utilization of gold in lactone synthesis has captivated researchers, leading to the development of numerous effective methodologies. Motivated by this, we present a comprehensive compilation of reports on the gold-catalyzed synthesis of lactones, encompassing literature till date.

Abstract
Asymmetric allylic alkylation (AAA) is a powerful method for the formation of highly useful, non-racemic allylic compounds. Here we present a complementary enantioselective process that generates allylic lactones via π-acid catalysis. More specifically, a catalytic enantioselective dehydrative lactonization of allylic alcohols using a novel PdII -catalyst containing the imidazole-based P,N-ligand (S)-StackPhos is reported. The high-yielding reactions are operationally simple to perform with enantioselectivities up to 99 % ee. This strategy facilitates the replacement of a poor leaving group with what would ostensibly be a better leaving group in the product avoiding complications arising from racemization by equilibration.

Abstract
γ-Butyrolactone, a five-membered lactone moiety, is one of the privileged structures of diverse natural products and biologically active small molecules. Because of their broad spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities, synthetic methods for γ-butyrolactones have received significant attention from synthetic and medicinal chemists for decades. Recently, new developments and improvements in traditional methods have been reported by considering synthetic efficiency, feasibility, and green chemistry. In this review, the pharmacological activities of natural and synthetic γ-butyrolactones are described, including their structures and bioassay methods. Mainly, we summarize recent advances, occurring during the past decade, in the construction of γ-butyrolactone classified based on the bond formation in γ-butyrolactone between (i) C5-O1 bond, (ii) C4-C5 and C2-O1 bonds, (iii) C3-C4 and C2-O1 bonds, (iv) C3-C4 and C5-O1 bonds, (v) C2-C3 and C2-O1 bonds, (vi) C3-C4 bond, and (vii) C2-O1 bond. In addition, the application to the total synthesis of natural products bearing γ-butyrolactone scaffolds is described.

Abstract
A unique lactonization of 2-methyl-3-acyl-4-phenylquinolines using PhIO as the oxidant and selectfluor as an additive is reported. The reaction occurs under ambient conditions through tandem oxidation and cyclization of sp3 C-H bonds under metal-free conditions. The heterocycle-fused lactones are obtained in moderate to good yield.

Abstract
Allylic oxidation of 2-allylbenzoic acids to phthalides, instead of Wacker-type isocoumarins, was achieved with 1,2-bis(phenylsulfinyl)ethane palladium(ii) acetate (White catalyst) and oxygen in DMSO. The selective formation of 3-ethylidenephthalides or 3-vinylphthalides was controlled by the addition of acids or bases, and the reaction conditions were applied to substituted 2-allylbenzoic acids to generate corresponding phthalides selectively. Mechanistic studies, including the corresponding reaction of (E)-2-(1-propenyl)benzoic acid to 3-methylisocoumarin, isomerization reaction of 3-vinylphthalide to 3-ethylidenephthalide, and the kinetic isotope effect using 2-(1,1-d2-allyl)benzoic acid, revealed the competition between Wacker-type oxidation and allylic C-H cleavage, which is the key step to generating phthalides. A natural product, 3-ethyl-6-hydroxyphthalide, was prepared by this method.
