Transition-Metal-Free Reductive Deoxygenative Olefination with CO2

Skeletal Formation of Carbocycles with CO2: Selective Synthesis of Indolo[3,2-b]carbazoles or Cyclophanes from Indoles, CO2, and Phenylsilane

The catalytic reactions of indoles with CO2 and phenylsilane afforded indolo[3,2-b]carbazoles, where the fused benzene ring was constructed by forming two C-H bonds and four C-C bonds with two CO2 molecules via deoxygenative conversions. Nine-membered cyclophanes made up of three indoles and three CO2 molecules were also obtained, where the cyclophane framework was constructed by forming six C-H bonds and six C-C bonds. These multicomponent cascade reactions giving completely different carbocycles were switched simply by choosing the solvent, acetonitrile or ethyl acetate.

Synthesis of Enamines, Aldehydes, and Nitriles from CO2: Scope of the One-Pot Strategy via Formamides

Tetrabutylammonium acetate (TBAA) and Cu(OAc)2 worked as a binary catalytic system for the solvent-free N-formylation of amines with CO2 and PhSiH3. This catalysis making C-H and C-N bonds with CO2 was coupled with the C-C bond-forming reactions to achieve the one-pot synthesis of enamines, aldehydes, and nitriles. The X-ray crystal structure of a Cu(OAc)2-TBAA complex was also revealed.

Photochemical Desaturation and Epoxidation with Oxygen by Sequential Flavin Catalysis

Catalytic desaturations are important strategies for the functionalization of organic molecules. In nature, flavoenzymes mediate the formation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds by concomitant cofactor reduction. Contrary to many laboratory methods for these reactions, such as the Saegusa-Ito oxidation, no transition metal reagents or catalysts are required. However, a molecular flavin-mediated variant has not been reported so far. We disclose a photochemical approach for silyl enol ether oxidation, which leads to α,β-unsaturated ketones (13 examples) in very good yields. The flavin catalysts are stable throughout the desaturation reaction, and we successfully applied them in a subsequent aerobic epoxidation by simply changing the reaction conditions. This protocol allowed us to directly convert silyl enol ethers into α,β-epoxyketones in a one-pot fashion (12 examples). Sequential flavin catalysis is not limited to one specific reactivity combination and can, inter alia, couple the photochemical oxidation with radical additions. We anticipate that flavin-catalyzed desaturation will be applicable to other substrate classes and that its sequential catalytic activity will enable rapid substrate diversification.

Catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide by a zinc hydride compound, [Tptm]ZnH, and conversion to the methanol level

The zinc hydride compound, [Tptm]ZnH, may achieve the reduction of CO₂ by (RO)₃SiH (R = Me, Et) to the methanol oxidation level, (MeO)_xSi(OR)_4-x, via the formate species, HCO₂Si(OR)₃. However, because insertion of CO₂ into the Zn-H bond is more facile than insertion of HCO₂Si(OR)₃, conversion of HCO₂Si(OR)₃ to the methanol level only occurs to a significant extent in the absence of CO₂.

Enantioselective Reductive Oligomerization of Carbon Dioxide into l-Erythrulose via a Chemoenzymatic Catalysis

A cell-free enantioselective transformation of the carbon atom of CO₂ has never been reported. In the urgent context of transforming CO₂ into products of high value, the enantiocontrolled synthesis of chiral compounds from CO₂ would be highly desirable. Using an original hybrid chemoenzymatic catalytic process, we report herein the reductive oligomerization of CO₂ into C₃ (dihydroxyacetone, DHA) and C₄ (l-erythrulose) carbohydrates, with perfect enantioselectivity of the latter chiral product. This was achieved with the key intermediacy of formaldehyde. CO₂ is first reduced selectively by 4e^- by an iron-catalyzed hydroboration reaction, leading to the isolation and complete characterization of a new bis(boryl)acetal compound derived from dimesitylborane. In an aqueous buffer solution at 30 °C, this compound readily releases formaldehyde, which is then involved in selective enzymatic transformations, giving rise either (i) to DHA using a formolase (FLS) catalysis or (ii) to l-erythrulose with a cascade reaction combining FLS and d-fructose-6-phosphate aldolase (FSA) A129S variant. Finally, the nature of the synthesized products is noteworthy, since carbohydrates are of high interest for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The present results prove that the cell-free de novo synthesis of carbohydrates from CO₂ as a sustainable carbon source is a possible alternative pathway in addition to the intensely studied biomass extraction and de novo syntheses from fossil resources.

C-Methylenation of anilines and indoles with CO2 and hydrosilane using a pentanuclear zinc complex catalyst

The one-step C-methylenation of anilines and indoles with CO2 and phenylsilane was catalyzed by a pentanuclear ZnII complex to give diarylmethanes via geminal C-H and C-C bond formation. It is proposed that the zinc-hydride complex generated in situ is a catalytically active species and that bis(silyl)acetal is a key intermediate. When aniline was used as a substrate, both the C-methylenation and N-methylation proceeded.

Carbon dioxide based methodologies for the synthesis of fine chemicals

Rapid environmental changes triggered by the increase in the concentration of heat-absorbing gases such as CO2 in the atmosphere have become a major cause of concern. One of the ways to counter this growing threat will be to efficiently convert atmospheric CO2 into value-added products via the development of efficient transition-metal-catalyzed processes. Conversion of CO2 into bulk products such as CH3OH and methane as well as its incorporation into commercial polyurethane synthesis has been achieved and reviewed extensively. However, the efficient transformation of CO2 into fine chemicals and value-added chemicals has many fold advantages. Recent years have seen a rapid rise in the number of metal-mediated protocols to achieve this goal of converting CO2 into fine chemicals. These are essential developments given the requirement of several commodities and fine chemicals in various industrial processes and the utilization of atmospheric CO2 will help provide a sustainable solution to the current environmental problems. Accordingly, we present here a comprehensive compilation of catalytic processes, involving CO2 as the C1 source for reacting with substrates such as alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, amines, acid chlorides, alcohols, allyl boronates, alkenyl triflates, and many others to provide easy access to a wide variety of useful molecules. Such a technology would certainly prove to be beneficial in solving the problems associated with the environmental accumulation of CO2.

Transition Metal-Free CO2 Fixation into New Carbon-Carbon Bonds

CO₂ is the ultimate renewable carbon source on Earth and the essential C₁ building block for carbohydrate biosynthesis in photosynthetic organisms. Modern synthetic chemistry is facing the key challenge of developing fundamental transformations, such as C-C bond formation, in a sustainable and efficient manner from renewable sources. In this Minireview, the most significant methods recently reported for CO₂ fixation under transition metal-free conditions are summarized, organized into three different chapters according to the nature of the chemical transformation that forges the new C-C bond. The focus is on the mechanistic aspects of the different CO₂ activation modes, with specific attention to those systems that operate under catalytic conditions.
