Abstract
A method for the synthesis of allyl substituted γ-butenolides via carbonyl ylide rearrangement of vinyl sulfoxonium ylide-derived carbenes has been developed. At rt, the mechanism involves a carbonyl ylide generation/allyloxy furan formation/[3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement/isomerization sequence for the generation of 3-allyl butenolides. At 70 °C, instead of the final isomerization step, the resulting [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement product undergoes further [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement to produce 5-allyl butenolide. In the absence of the catalyst, the reaction affords a diene via [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement.

Abstract
The state-of-the-art bulk-heterojunction (BHJ)-type organic solar cells (OSCs) have exhibited power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of exceeding 18%. Thereinto, thiophene and its fused-ring derivatives play significant roles in facilitating the development of OSCs due to their excellent semiconducting natures. Furan as thiophene analogue, is a ubiquitous motif in naturally occurring organic compounds. Driven by the advantages of furan, such as less steric hindrance, good solubility, excellent stacking, strong rigidity and fluorescence, biomass derived fractions, more and more research groups focus on the furan-based materials for using in OSCs in the past decade. To systematically understand the developments of furan-based photovoltaic materials, the relationships between the molecular structures, optoelectronic properties, and photovoltaic performances for the furan-based semiconductor materials including single furan, benzofuran, benzodifuran (BDF) (containing thienobenzofuran (TBF)), naphthodifurans (NDF), and polycyclic furan are summarized. Finally, the empirical regularities and perspectives of the development of this kind of new organic semiconductor materials are extracted.

Abstract
We investigated a novel Cu-catalyzed annulation of 2,3-allenoic acids with diphenylphosphine oxide, leading to the formation of 4-phosphate butenolides in up to 88% yield. The formation of the C-P bond provides new avenues for the functionalization of different furan-2(5H)-ones, with favorable features such as suitable functional group tolerance and mild synthesis conditions.

Abstract
The five-membered oxacyclic system of furan-2(5H)-ones, commonly named as γ-
butenolides or appropriately as Δα,β-butenolides, is of high interest since many studies have proven its
bioactivity. During the past few years, Δα,β-butenolides have been important synthetic targets, with
several reports of new procedures for their construction. A short compendium of the main different
synthetic methodologies focused on the Δα,β-butenolide ring formation, along with selected examples
of compounds with relevant biological activities of these promising pharmaceutical entities is presented.

Abstract
Concise construction of furan and thiophene units has played an important role in the synthesis of potentially bioactive compounds and functional materials. Herein, an efficient Lewis acid ZnCl2 catalyzed [4+1] annulation of alkylthio-substituted enaminones is reported, that is, α-oxo ketene N,S-acetals with sulfur ylides to afford 2-acyl-3-aminofuran derivatives. In a similar fashion, [4+1] annulation of the corresponding enaminothiones, that is, α-thioxo ketene N,S-acetals, with sulfur ylides efficiently proceeded to give multisubstituted 3-aminothiophenes. This method features wide substrate scopes as well as broad functional group tolerance, offering a concise route to highly functionalized furans and thiophenes.

Abstract
Enynes with a tethered carbonyl substituent are converted into substituted furan derivatives upon hydrogenation using [Cp*RuCl]4 as the catalyst. Paradoxically, this transformation can occur along two distinct pathways, each of which proceeds via discrete pianostool ruthenium carbenes. In the first case, hydrogenation and carbene formation are synchronized ("gem-hydrogenation"), whereas the second pathway comprises carbene formation by carbophilic activation of the triple bond, followed by hydrogenative catalyst recycling. Representative carbene intermediates of either route were characterized by X-ray crystallography; the structural data prove that the attack of the carbonyl group on the electrophilic carbene center follows a Bürgi-Dunitz trajectory.

Abstract
The efficient synthesis of a range of structurally related butenolides has been observed while we were exploring the substrate-scope of a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reaction. While aliphatic aldehydes gave the expected HWE product, aromatic aldehydes furnished butenolides, resulting from the dimerization of the HWE product during desilylation of the initially formed HWE adduct. In addition to isolating butenolides in a high yield, we have also determined precisely when dimerization occurs.
