Dielectric Relaxation of Powdered Molecular Gyrotops Having a Thiophene Dioxide-diyl as a Dipolar Rotor

Triptycene-Based Molecular Rods for Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayers

Herein we introduce fully modular synthesis leading to three representative examples of rigid molecular rods that are intended to form sturdy monolayers on various surfaces. These molecules contain two triptycene units that are designed to interlock into a compact "double-decker" structure. Two of the three final products provided suitable crystals for X-ray diffraction (analyzed on synchrotron), allowing deeper insight into packing in the 3-D crystal lattice. The acidity of all three compounds were determined by capillary electrophoresis, and the pKa values ranged between 2.06-2.53. All three rigid rods easily formed Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers (LBMs) on the water-air interfaces, with the area per molecule equal to 55-59 Å2 /molecule, suggesting tight intermolecular packing. The thickness of all three films reached ∼19 Å after transfer to a gold (111) surface, meaning that individual molecules are tilted maximally 38° from the axis perpendicular to the surface. The structure of one of these films on a gold (111) surface was visualized by AFM. These geometrically unique molecules represent promising platforms with a wide scope of applicability in the supramolecular architecture.

High-Temperature and Large-Polarization Ferroelectric with Second Harmonic Generation Response in a Novel Crown Ether Clathrate

Molecular ferroelectrics of high-temperature reversible phase transitions are very rare and have attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this paper is described the successful synthesis of a novel high-temperature host-guest inclusion ferroelectric: [(C₆ H₅ NF₃ )(18-crown-6)][BF₄ ] (1) that shows a pair of reversible peaks at 348 K (heating) and 331 K (cooling) with a heat hysteresis about 17 K by differential scanning calorimetry measurements, thus indicating that 1 undergoes a reversible structural phase transition. Variable-temperature PXRD and temperature-dependent dielectric measurements further prove the phase-transition behavior of 1. The second harmonic response demonstrates that 1 belongs to a non-centrosymmetric space group at room temperature and is a good nonlinear optical material. In its semiconducting properties, 1 shows a wide optical band gap of about 4.43 eV that comes chiefly from the C, H and O atoms of the crystals. In particular, the ferroelectric measurements of 1 exhibit a typical polarization-electric hysteresis loop with a large spontaneous polarization (P_s ) of about 4.06 μC/cm² . This finding offers an alternative pathway for designing new ferroelectric-dielectric and nonlinear optical materials and related physical properties in organic-inorganic and other hybrid crystals.

Pairing multicomponent stators with aromatic rotators for new emissive molecular rotors

We demonstrate here that the Ugi-Sonogashira protocol can be successfully used to obtain five new molecular rotors 10a-e with strong emission. They have been synthesized by combining multicomponent Ugi stators and several aromatic rotary components: phenylene, p-xylene, naphthalene and anthracene. The synthesized conjugated rotors are highly fluorescent (Φf = 0.39 to Φf = 0.10), and changes in their emission were observed upon variations of the surrounding media. Particularly, we found that they are sensitive to aggregation (THF/water) or high viscosity (methanol/glycerol) conditions. This work paves the way to develop new emissive rotors with exciting photophysical properties.

Solid-State 2H NMR Study for Deuterated Phenylene Dynamics in a Crystalline Gyroscope-Like Molecule

Molecular rotors have earned substantial popularity in recent times, owing to the unique dependence of its crystalline properties on the rotational dynamics of the rotor. We have recently reported the synthesis and crystal structure of a phenylene-bridged macrocage as a gyroscope-like molecule in the crystalline state. The dynamics of the phenylene moiety was probed by solid-state 13C CP/MAS proton dipolar dephasing NMR spectroscopy. Herein, solid-state 2H NMR studies were performed to study the dynamics of the gyroscope-like molecule with a deuterated rotor in the crystalline state. A spectrum with a narrow line shape was obtained at 300 K. The facile exchange among three stationary states, which was observed by X-ray crystallography, was clearly confirmed. Additionally, a crystal-to-crystal phase transition that switches the motion of the rotor was observed in the DSC analysis of the powdered sample.

Kinetic Stabilization of Carbazole Nitroxides by Inclusion in a Macrocage and Their Electron Spin Resonance Characterization

Some nitroxides, for example, tetramethylpyridiniumoxide, are known as stable radicals; however, carbazole nitroxide is less stable. The kinetic stabilization of labile radicals by introduction of bulky substituents is usually effective to investigate intrinsic properties of the molecule because of small electronic perturbation induced by the substituents. In this study, macrocage molecules with a carbazole nitroxide connected by covalent bonds were newly designed as kinetically stabilized carbazole nitroxides. The nitroxides were prepared and characterized by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The caged nitroxides presented long half-lives (∼50 h) by kinetic analysis.

Synthesis of dipolar molecular rotors as linkers for metal-organic frameworks

We report the synthesis of five dicarboxylic acid-substituted dipolar molecular rotors for the use as linker molecules in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The rotor molecules exhibit very low rotational barriers and decent to very high permanent, charge free dipole moments, as shown by density functional theory calculations on the isolated molecules. Four rotors are fluorescent in the visible region. The linker designs are based on push-pull-substituted phenylene cores with ethynyl spacers as rotational axes, functionalized with carboxylic acid groups for implementation in MOFs. The substituents at the phenylene core are chosen to be small to leave rotational freedom in solids with confined free volumes. The dipole moments are generated by electron-donating substituents (benzo-1,3-dioxole, benzo-1,4-dioxane, or benzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole annelation) and withdrawing substituents (difluoro, or dicyano substitution) at the opposite positions of the central phenylene core. A combination of 1,4-dioxane annelation and dicyano substitution generates a theoretically predicted, very high dipole moment of 10.1 Debye. Moreover, the molecules are sufficiently small to fit into cavities of 10 Å3. Hence, the dipolar rotors should be ideally suited as linkers in MOFs with potential applications as ferroelectric materials and for optical signal processing.

Machine Metathesis: Thermal and Catalyzed Exchange of Piston Rods in Multicomponent Nanorotor/Nanoslider Ensemble

Three-component nanorotor R1 ( k₂₉₈ = 80 kHz) and two-component slider-on-deck DS2 ( k₂₉₈ = 440 kHz) were prepared from rotator S1 and stator [Cu₃(1)]³⁺ and from S2 and deck D, respectively. Mixing of R1 with DS2 leads to clean metathesis, furnishing the slower nanodevices R2 ( k₂₉₈ = 29.6 kHz) and DS1 ( k₂₉₈ = 32.2 kHz). Exchange of the piston rods S1 and S2 is completed within 22 min (uncatalyzed) or 3 min (catalyzed) at 298 K.
