Abstract
Arene-tethered diols constitute a valuable class of structural motifs of drug and bioactive natural product molecules. In this study, a regioselective protocol for olefination and arylation of arene-tethered 1,2-diols and 1,3-diols has been developed using easily foldable acetal structures for attaching pyridine and nitrile directing groups. The method overcomes the steric hindrance effect of the short-chain diols and affords products in high yield and regioselectivity. This efficient cascaded catalysis has been successfully utilized in the syntheses of natural products such as peucedanol, decursinol, and marmesin.

Abstract
Aromatic halides constitute a valuable class of building blocks that are commonly used in organic synthesis. In this study, we demonstrate usage of aryl bromides and aryl iodides in C-Br or C-I bond formation. Methyl 2-bromobenzoate and 2-nitrophenyl iodides were developed as mild and effective bromination and iodination reagents for functionalization of arene-tethered diols. This efficient cascaded catalysis can be applied to the total syntheses of natural product Mafaicheenamine A and Claulamine A.

Abstract
The classic electrophilic bromination leads to ortho- and para-bromination of anilines due to their electron-rich properties. Herein we report the development of an unprecedented Pd-catalyzed meta-C–H bromination of aniline derivatives using commercially available N-bromophthalimide (NBP), which overcomes the competing ortho/para-selectivity of electrophilic bromination of anilines. The addition of acid additives is crucial for the success of this reaction. A broad range of substrates with various substitution patterns can be tolerated in this reaction. Moreover, benzoic acid derivatives bearing complex substitution patterns are also viable with this mild bromination reaction, and meta-C–H chlorination is also feasible under similar reaction conditions. The ease of the directing group removal and subsequent diverse transformations of the brominated products demonstrate the application potential of this method and promise new opportunities for drug discovery. An unprecedented Pd-catalyzed meta-C–H bromination and chlorination of highly substituted aniline and benzoic acid derivatives using N-bromophthalimide is reported.![]()

Abstract
Despite the widespread applications of C–H functionalization, controlling site selectivity remains a significant challenge. Covalently attached directing groups (DGs) served as ancillary ligands to ensure ortho-, meta- and para-C–H functionalization over the last two decades. These covalently linked DGs necessitate two extra steps for a single C–H functionalization: introduction of DG prior to C–H activation and removal of DG post-functionalization. Here we report a temporary directing group (TDG) for meta-C–H functionalization via reversible imine formation. By overruling facile ortho-C–H bond activation by imine-N atom, a suitably designed pyrimidine-based TDG successfully delivered selective meta-C–C bond formation. Application of this temporary directing group strategy for streamlining the synthesis of complex organic molecules without any necessary pre-functionalization at the meta position has been explored. Site-selective C–H functionalization still faces some challenges, such as the introduction and removal of an appropriate directing group. Here, the authors introduce a temporary directing group for selective meta-C–H functionalization of 2-arylbenzaldehydes via reversible imine formation.

Abstract
The rhodium-catalyzed olefination and deuteration of tetrahydrocarbazoles in water with the aid of an N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl-protected group is presented. This olefination method features a broad substrate scope, good functional-group tolerance, and high efficiency in water. Practical applications of the protocol are illustrated by the synthesis of various evodiamine derivatives. As such, this environmentally friendly approach to directly modify natural products will attract much attention in academic and industrial research.

Abstract
Direct para-selective C-H functionalization of arenes remains a daunting challenge and is still significantly restricted to a few scaffolds. Herein, we report an unprecedented pyridine-based para-directing template (DT) assisted, Pd-catalyzed para-C-H alkenylation of three classes of arenes, i.e. phenylpropanoic acids, 2-phenyl benzoic acids and benzyl alcohols, with a series of alkenes including perfluoroalkenes. Notably, the pyridine-based para-DT could be easily synthesized and readily recycled under mild conditions. These results may find application in rapid construction of para-substituted arenes and stimulate the exploration of novel methods for para-C-H functionalization of arenes.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalysed functionalizations of inert C-H bonds to construct C-C bonds represent an ideal route in the synthesis of valuable organic molecules. Fine tuning of directing groups, catalysts and ligands has played a crucial role in selective C-H bond (sp2 or sp3) activation. Recent developments in these areas have assured a high level of regioselectivity in C-H olefination reactions. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress in the oxidative olefination of sp2 and sp3 C-H bonds with special emphasis on distal, atroposelective, non-directed sp2 and directed sp3 C-H olefination. The scope, limitation, and mechanism of various transition metal-catalysed olefination reactions have been described briefly.

Abstract
A protocol of carboxyl-group-assisted, Pd(II)-catalyzed remote meta-C(sp2)-H olefination and arylation of benzylsulfonamides has been developed. It was supposed to proceed through a κ2 coordination of the carboxyl group to the Pd center. These findings demonstrated the versatility of carboxyl-assisted remote meta-C-H activation strategy and might stimulate the exploration of novel reactivity and selectivity of other traditional chelating groups in different contexts.

Abstract
Over the last few decades C-H olefination has received significant interest, due to the importance and usefulness of aryl olefins both as synthetic targets and intermediates. While a wide range of ortho-olefination protocols have been developed, only a small number of meta-olefinations are currently available. Importantly, the most common approach to meta-olefination, using a large meta-directing template, is not suitable for substrates such as fluorobenzenes, which cannot be derivatised. We report that the meta-selective olefination of fluoroarenes can be achieved via the use of CO2 as a traceless directing group, which can be easily installed and removed in a one-pot process. Furthermore, this approach avoids the use of stoichiometric Ag(i)-salts, commonly used in C-H olefinations, and affords complete meta- over ortho/para-regioselectivity.

Abstract
Cu(I) catalysts enable C-B bond formation via direct insertion of vinyldiazoacetates into B-H bonds of borane-phosphine Lewis adducts to form phosphine-protected allylboranes under mild conditions. The resulting allylborane-phosphine Lewis adducts can be used in the diastereoselective allylation of aldehydes directly without the need for removal of the phosphine. The allylation reaction proceeds with high diastereoselectivity and yields 5,6-disubstituted dihydropyranones after treatment with an appropriate acid.

Abstract
We disclose herein the development of a versatile 1,2-diol directing template for palladium-catalyzed remote meta-C-H functionalization of aromatic aldehydes and ketones. In situ-generation of acetals and ketals, as well as removal afterwards, makes the C-H bond functionalization process more straightforward and efficient. This also represents the first example of chelation-directed meta-C-H functionalization of aromatic aldehydes and ketones.

Abstract
An unprecedented intramolecular remote C-H activation via sequential 1,4-palladium migration with an aromatic ring as a conveyor has been described. This reaction provides an efficient route to construct diverse polycyclic frameworks in moderate to good yield via palladium-catalyzed remote C-H activation/alkene insertion, arylation, alkenylation, and the Heck reaction. The preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the 1,4-palladium migration process was reversible.
