Abstract
We report herein a Cu-catalyzed regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective acylboration of 1,3-butadienylboronate with acyl fluorides. Under the developed conditions, the reactions provide (Z)-β,γ-unsaturated ketones bearing an α-tertiary stereocenter with high Z-selectivity and excellent enantioselectivities. While direct access to highly enantioenriched E-isomers was not successful, we showed that such molecules can be synthesized with excellent E-selectivity and optical purities via Pd-catalyzed alkene isomerization from the corresponding Z-isomers. The orthogonal chemical reactivities of the functional groups embedded in the ketone products allow for diverse chemoselective transformations, which provides a valuable platform for further derivatization.

Abstract
Cu-catalyzed highly stereoselective and enantiodivergent syntheses of (Z)- or (E)-β,γ-unsaturated ketones from 1,3-butadienyl silanes are developed. The nature of the silyl group of the dienes has a significant impact on the stereo- and enantioselectivity of the reactions. Under the developed catalytic systems, the reactions of acyl fluorides with phenyldiemthylsilyl-substituted 1,3-diene gave (Z)-β,γ-unsaturated ketones bearing an α-tertiary stereogenic center with excellent enantioselectivities and high Z-selectivities, where the reactions with triisopropylsilyl-substituted 1,3-butadiene formed (E)-β,γ-unsaturated ketones with high optical purities and excellent E-selectivities. The products generated from the reactions contain three functional groups with orthogonal chemical reactivities, which can undergo a variety of transformations to afford synthetically valuable intermediates.

Abstract
A practical method for the efficient and enantioselective preparation of versatile ketones and aldehydes that contain an α-quaternary stereocenter is described. Reactions utilize simple carboxylic acid or ester starting materials, a monodentate chiral phosphine, and afford a variety of aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl, and alkyl-substituted ketone and aldehyde products in 25-94 % yield and 90 : 10 to >99 : 1 enantiomeric ratio. Reactions proceed by acyl substitution with in situ formed chiral allylic nucleophiles, and display selectivity and conversion dependence on a protic additive. The utility of the approach is demonstrated through several product transformations.

Abstract
We report herein stereoselective syntheses of α,α-disubstituted (E)- and (Z)-crotylboronates. Starting from α-boryl (E)- or (Z)-crotylboronate, base-mediated alkylation occurred exclusively at the position α to the boryl groups to give targeted boronates while retaining the geometries of the alkenes in the starting crotylboronates. Under proper conditions, the resulting α,α-disubstituted crotylboronates underwent aldehyde addition to give allylated products with high stereoselectivities.

Abstract
We report herein a rare example of enantiodivergent aldehyde addition with β-alkenyl allylic boronates via chiral Brønsted acid catalysis. 2,6-Di-9-anthracenyl-substituted chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed asymmetric allylation using β-vinyl substituted allylic boronate gave alcohols with R absolute configuration. The sense of asymmetric induction of the catalyst in these reactions is opposite to those in prior reports. Moreover, in the presence of the same acid catalyst, the reactions with β-2-propenyl substituted allylic boronate generated homoallylic alcohol products with S absolute configuration. Unusual substrate-catalyst C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the favoured reaction transition state were identified as the origins of observed enantiodivergence through DFT computational studies.

Abstract
We report herein the development of stereodivergent syntheses of enantioenriched homoallylic alcohols using chiral nonracemic α-CH2 Bpin-substituted crotylboronate. Chiral phosphoric acid (S)-A-catalyzed asymmetric allyl addition with the reagent gave Z-anti-homoallylic alcohols with excellent enantioselectivities and Z-selectivities. When the enantiomeric acid catalyst (R)-A was utilized, the stereoselectivity was completely reversed and E-anti-homoallylic alcohols were obtained with high E-selectivities and excellent enantioselectivities. By pairing the chirality of the boron reagent with the catalyst, two complementary stereoisomers of chiral homoallylic alcohols can be obtained selectively from the same boron reagent. DFT computational studies were conducted to probe the origins of the observed stereoselectivity. These reactions generate highly enantioenriched homoallylic alcohol products that are valuable for rapid construction of polyketide structural frameworks.

Lee Y, Han S, Cho SH. Catalytic Chemo- and Enantioselective Transformations of gem-Diborylalkanes and (Diborylmethyl)metallic Species. Acc Chem Res 2021; 54:3917-3929. Abstract
Chemo- and stereoselective transformations of polyborylalkanes are powerful and efficient methods to access optically active molecules with greater complexity and diversity through programmed synthetic design. Among the various polyborylalkanes, gem-diborylalkanes have attracted much attention in organic chemistry as versatile synthetic handles. The notable advantage of gem-diborylalkanes lies in their ability to generate two key intermediates, α-borylalkyl anions and (gem-diborylalkyl) anions. These two different intermediates can be applied to various enantioselective reactions to rapidly access a diverse set of enantioenriched organoboron compounds, which can be further manipulated to generate various chiral molecule libraries via stereospecific C(sp3)-B bond transformations. In this Account, we summarize our recent contributions to the development of catalytic chemo- and stereoselective reactions using gem-diborylalkanes as versatile nucleophiles, which can be categorized as follows: (1) copper-catalyzed enantioselective coupling of gem-diborylalkanes with electrophiles and (2) the design and synthesis of (diborylmethyl)metallic species and their applications to enantioselective reactions. Since Shibata and Endo reported the Pd-catalyzed chemoselective Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of gem-diborylalkanes with organohalides in 2014, Morken and Hall subsequently developed the first enantioselective analogous reactions using TADDOL-derived chiral phosphoramidite as the supporting ligand of a palladium catalyst. This discovery sparked interest in the catalytic enantioselective coupling of gem-diborylalkanes with electrophiles. Our initial studies focused on generating chiral (α-borylmethyl)copper species by enantiotopic-group-selective transmetalation of gem-diborylalkanes with chiral copper complexes and their reactions with various aldimines and ketimines to afford syn-β-aminoboronate esters with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivity. Moreover, we developed the enantioselective allylation of gem-diborylalkanes that proceeded by reaction of in situ-generated chiral (α-borylalkyl)copper and allyl bromides. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the enantiotopic-group-selective transmetalation between gem-diborylalkanes and the chiral copper complex occurred through the open transition state rather than the closed transition state, thereby effectively generating chiral (α-borylmethyl)copper species. We also utilized (diborylmethyl)metallic species such as (diborylmethyl)silanes and (diborylmethyl)zinc halides in catalytic enantioselective reactions. We succeeded in developing the enantiotopic-group-selective cross-coupling of (diborylmethyl)silanes with aryl iodides to afford enantioenriched benzylic 1,1-silylboronate esters, which could be used for further consecutive stereospecific transformations to afford various enantioenriched molecules. In addition, we synthesized (diborylmethyl)zinc halides for the first time by the transmetalation of isolated (diborylmethyl)lithium and zinc(II) halides and their utilization to the synthesis of enantioenriched gem-diborylalkanes bearing a chiral center at the β-position via an iridium-catalyzed enantioselective allylic substitution process. In addition to our research efforts, we also include key contributions by other research groups. We hope that this Account will draw the attention of the synthetic community to gem-diboryl compounds and provide guiding principles for the future development of catalytic enantioselective reactions using gem-diboryl compounds.

Recent years have witnessed an increase in the popularity of α-boryl organometallic reagents as versatile nucleophiles in asymmetric synthesis. These compounds have been adopted in chemo- and stereoselective coupling reactions with a number of different electrophiles. The resulting enantioenriched boronic esters can be applied in stereospecific carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bond construction reactions, enabling a two-step strategy for the construction of complex structures with high efficiency and functional group compatibility. Due to these reasons, tremendous effort has been devoted to the preparation of enantiomerically enriched α-boryl organometallic reagents and to the development of stereoselective reactions of related racemic or prochiral materials. In this review, we describe the enantio- or diastereoselective reactions that involve α-boryl organometallic reagents as starting materials or products and we showcase their synthetic utility.

Abstract
Stereoselective synthesis of (E)-δ-vinyl-homoallylic alcohols was developed. Starting from α-vinyl allylboronate, Cu-catalyzed allylation of aldehydes or ketones forms secondary or tertiary δ-vinyl-homoallylic alcohols with high E-selectivities. It is proposed that the reaction operates under the Curtin-Hammett principle via the intermediacy of α-vinyl allylic copper species to give the alcohol products with high E-selectivities.

Abstract
We report a new method for constructing propionate-derived trisubstituted alkene motifs in a stereoselective manner. 1-Substituted 1,1-di(pinacolatoboryl)-(E)-alk-2-enes are generated in situ from 1-substituted 1,1-di(pinacolatoboryl)alk-3-enes through ruthenium(II)-catalyzed double-bond transposition. These species undergo a chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed allylation reaction of aldehydes to produce the E isomers of anti-homoallylic alcohols. On the other hand, the corresponding Z isomers of anti-homoallylic alcohols are obtained when a dimeric palladium(I) complex is employed as the catalyst for this double-bond transposition. Thus, both E and Z isomers can be synthesized from the same starting materials. A B-C(sp2 ) bond remaining with the allylation product undergoes the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction to furnish a propionate-derived trisubstituted alkene motif in a stereo-defined form. The present method to construct the motifs with (E)- and (Z)-alkenes are successfully applied to the syntheses of (+)-isotrichostatic acid, (-)-isotrichostatin RK, and (+)-trichostatic acid, respectively.

Abstract
A general method for the synthesis of secondary homoallylic alcohols containing α-quaternary carbon stereogenic centers in high diastereo- and enantioselectivity (up to >20:1 dr and >99:1 er) is disclosed. Transformations employ readily accessible aldehydes, allylic diboronates, and a chiral copper catalyst and proceed by γ-addition of in situ generated enantioenriched boron-stabilized allylic copper nucleophiles. The catalytic protocol is general for a wide variety of aldehydes as well as a variety of 1,1-allylic diboronic esters. Hammett studies disclose that diastereoselectivity of the reaction is correlated to the electronic nature of the aldehyde, with dr increasing as aldehydes become more electron poor.

Abstract
The enantioselective anti- and syn-(borylmethyl)allylation of aldehydes via phosphoric acid catalysis is reported. Both (E)- and (Z)-γ-borylmethyl allylboronate reagents were prepared via the Cu-catalyzed highly stereoselective protoboration of 1,3-dienylboronate. Chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed aldehyde allylation with either the (E)- or (Z)-allylboron reagent provided 1,2-anti- or 1,2-syn-adducts in good yields with high enantioselectivities. The application to the synthesis of morinol D was accomplished.

Abstract
A Cu-catalyzed regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselective carboboration of 1,1-bisboryl-1,3-butadiene is developed to generate enantioenriched 3,6'-bisboryl-anti-1,2-oxaborinan-3-enes. DFT calculations indicate that the initial diene 1,2-borocupration forms a 3 η-allylic copper as the most stable intermediate. Subsequent aldehyde addition, however, operates under Curtin-Hammett control via a more reactive α,α-bisboryl tertiary allylcopper species to furnish products with high enantioselectivities. The three boryl groups in the products are properly differentiated and can undergo a variety of chemoselective transformations to produce enantioenriched homoallylic alcohols with a stereodefined trisubstituted alkene.

Abstract
The development of α,α-disubstituted crotylboronate reagents is reported. Chiral Brønsted acid-catalyzed asymmetric aldehyde addition with the developed E-crotylboron reagent gave (E)-anti-1,2-oxaborinan-3-enes with excellent enantioselectivities and E-selectivities. With BF3·OEt2 catalysis, the stereoselectivity is reversed, and (Z)-δ-boryl-anti-homoallylic alcohols are obtained with excellent Z-selectivities from the same E-crotylboron reagent. The Z-crotylboron reagent also participates in BF3·OEt2-catalyzed crotylation to furnish (Z)-δ-boryl-syn-homoallylic alcohols with good Z-selectivities. DFT computations establish the origins of observed enantio- and stereoselectivities of chiral Brønsted acid-catalyzed asymmetric allylation. Stereochemical models for BF3·OEt2-catalyzed reactions are proposed to rationalize the Z-selective allyl additions. These reactions generate highly valuable homoallylic alcohol products with a stereodefined trisubstituted alkene unit. The synthetic utility is further demonstrated by the total syntheses of salinipyrones A and B.

Abstract
The enantioselective synthesis of 6'-boryl-anti-1,2-oxaborinan-3-enes is reported. A Cu-catalyzed highly stereoselective 1,4-protoboration of 1,1-bisboryl-1,3-butadiene is developed to generate (E)-α,δ-bisboryl-crotylboronate. The chiral phosphoric-acid-catalyzed asymmetric allylboration of aldehydes with the boron reagent produces 6'-boryl-anti-1,2-oxaborinan-3-enes with excellent Z-selectivities and enantioselectivities. The product contains a vinyl and alkyl boronate unit that can directly participate in a variety of subsequent transformations.

Abstract
A method for the site-selective and diastereoselective conjugate addition of boron-stabilized allylic nucleophiles to α,β-unsaturated ketones is disclosed. Transformations involve easily prepared γ,γ-disubstituted allyldiboron reagents and proceed in the presence of a fluoride activator at 80 °C. Reactions proceed with a wide variety of enones and allyldiboron reagents efficiently to deliver ketone products that contain otherwise difficult-to-access vicinal β-tertiary and γ-quaternary carbon stereogenic centers and an alkenylboron moiety. The utility of the method is highlighted by several transformations, including cross-coupling and carbocyclizations.

Abstract
A catalytic sequence for the diastereo- and enantioselective preparation of homoallylic alcohols with an adjacent quaternary (stereo)center is reported. The one-pot process relies on the use of a single (achiral or chiral) iridium complex to catalyze the concomitant isomerization of primary allylic alcohols and homoallylboronates into (chiral) aldehydes and allylboronates, respectively. In the same flask, a chiral Brønsted acid is added next to engage the isomerization products into a stereocontrolled allylboration reaction. Structural variations have been performed on both the allylic alcohols and the homoallylboronates. This mild process affords an array of stereochemically congested and complex chiral secondary homoallylic alcohols in high yield, excellent diastereoselectivity, and usually high enantioselectivity.

Abstract
We report the highly diastereo- and enantioselective preparation of (E)-δ-boryl-substituted anti-homoallylic alcohols in two steps from terminal alkynes. This method consists of a cobalt(II)-catalyzed 1,1-diboration reaction of terminal alkynes with B2 pin2 and a palladium(I)-mediated asymmetric allylation reaction of the resulting 1,1-di(boryl)alk-1-enes with aldehydes in the presence of a chiral phosphoric acid. Propyne, which is produced as the byproduct during petroleum refining, could be used as the starting material to construct homoallylic alcohols that are otherwise difficult to synthesize with high stereocontrol.

Abstract
Cu-catalyzed stereoselective synthesis of (E)-δ-silyl-anti-homoallylic alcohols from 1,3-dienylsilane was developed. Mechanistic studies revealed that the borocupration of dienylsilane proceeded through a 1,2-addition pathway to give an allylcopper intermediate with Cu distal to the silyl group. However, the subsequent aldehyde allylation proceeded via Curtin-Hammett control to give (E)-δ-silyl-anti-homoallylic alcohols with high diastereoselectivities. This method was applied to the synthesis of the C1-9 fragment of a polyketide natural product, mycinolide IV.
