Carbonylative Transformation of Allylarenes with CO Surrogates: Tunable Synthesis of 4-Arylbutanoic Acids, 2-Arylbutanoic Acids, and 4-Arylbutanals

Pd-Catalyzed Regioselective Hydrocarboxylation of Alkyl Terminal Olefins with Oxalic Acid

A Pd-catalyzed regioselective hydrocarboxylation of alkyl terminal olefins with oxalic acid is described. A wide variety of linear carboxylic acids can be readily obtained in good yields and high l/b (linear/branched) ratios with Pd2(dba)3 and (p-ClPh)3P under mild conditions. The reaction process is operationally simple and requires no handling of toxic CO. In addition, branched carboxylic acids can also be formed in good regioselectivities with PdCl2 and (2',6'-dimethoxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-yl)diphenylphosphine (L1).

Palladium-Catalyzed Inward Isomerization Hydroaminocarbonylation of Alkenes

In contrast to the kinetically favored outward isomerization-hydrocarbonylation of alkenes, the disfavored inward isomerization-hydrocarbonylation of alkenes remains an important challenge. Herein, we have developed a novel and effective palladium-catalyzed inward isomerization-hydroaminocarbonylation of unactivated alkenes and aniline hydrochlorides for the formation of synthetically valuable α-aryl carboxylic amides in high yields and high site-selectivities. The high efficiency of the reaction is attributed to a relay catalysis strategy, in which the Markovnikov-favored [PdH]-PtBu3 catalyst is responsible for inward isomerization, while the [PdH]-Ruphos catalyst is responsible for hydroaminocarbonylation of the resulting conjugated aryl alkenes. The reaction exhibits highly functional group tolerance and provides a new method for formal carbonylation of remote C(sp3)-H bond.

Pd-Catalyzed Regioselective Hydroformylation of Olefins with HCO2H and Its Derivatives

An effective Pd-catalyzed regioselective hydroformylation process with N-formylsaccharin or 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl formate along with formic acid is described. Linear aldehydes can be obtained in up to 83% yield and >20:1 l/b ratio. The reaction is operationally simple without the need for external CO and H2.

Allylic C-H amination cross-coupling furnishes tertiary amines by electrophilic metal catalysis

Intermolecular cross-coupling of terminal olefins with secondary amines to form complex tertiary amines-a common motif in pharmaceuticals-remains a major challenge in chemical synthesis. Basic amine nucleophiles in nondirected, electrophilic metal-catalyzed aminations tend to bind to and thereby inhibit metal catalysts. We reasoned that an autoregulatory mechanism coupling the release of amine nucleophiles with catalyst turnover could enable functionalization without inhibiting metal-mediated heterolytic carbon-hydrogen cleavage. Here, we report a palladium(II)-catalyzed allylic carbon-hydrogen amination cross-coupling using this strategy, featuring 48 cyclic and acyclic secondary amines (10 pharmaceutically relevant cores) and 34 terminal olefins (bearing electrophilic functionality) to furnish 81 tertiary allylic amines, including 12 drug compounds and 10 complex drug derivatives, with excellent regio- and stereoselectivity (>20:1 linear:branched, >20:1 E:Z).

Pd-Catalyzed Regioselective Branched Hydrocarboxylation of Terminal Olefins with Formic Acid

A regioselective Pd-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of terminal olefins with HCOOH is described. A wide variety of branched carboxylic acids can readily be obtained with high regioselectivities under mild reaction conditions. The reaction is operationally simple and requires no handling of toxic CO. The ligand and LiCl are important factors for reaction reactivity and selectivity.

Valorisation of biobased olefins via Rh-catalyzed transfer hydroformylation and isomerization using formaldehyde as a CO/H2 surrogate

The use of biomass as a new platform of chemical substrates has become a subject of intensive research. In this article the selective functionalization and isomerization of allylbenzenes by transfer hydroformylation with formaldehyde is reported.

Rapid Organocatalytic Formation of Carbon Monoxide: Application towards Carbonylative Cross Couplings

Herein, the first organocatalytic method for the transformation of non‐derivatized formic acid into carbon monoxide (CO) is introduced. Formylpyrrolidine (FPyr) and trichlorotriazine (TCT), which is a cost‐efficient commodity chemical, enable this decarbonylation. Utilization of dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and catalyst even allows for a rapid CO generation at room temperature. Application towards four different carbonylative cross coupling protocols demonstrates the high synthetic utility and versatility of the new approach. Remarkably, this also comprehends a carbonylative Sonogashira reaction at room temperature employing intrinsically difficult electron‐deficient aryl iodides. Commercial ¹³C‐enriched formic acid facilitates the production of radiolabeled compounds as exemplified by the pharmaceutical Moclobemide. Finally, comparative experiments verified that the present method is highly superior to other protocols for the activation of carboxylic acids.
