Steric Tuning of Sulfinamide/Sulfoxides as Chiral Ligands with C1, Pseudo-meso, and Pseudo-C2 Symmetries: Application in Rhodium(I)-Mediated Arylation

Cage-Shaped Phosphites Having C3 -Symmetric Chiral Environment: Steric Control of Lewis Basicity and Application as Chiral Ligands in Rhodium-Catalyzed Conjugate Additions

Designing chiral ligands with an axial symmetry higher than C2 -rotational symmetry is one of the most crucial approaches to improving enantioselectivity in asymmetric synthesis. Herein, C3 -symmetric chiral cage-shaped phosphites are reported. Their Lewis basicity and chiral environment are precisely controlled by the tethered group. The cage-shaped phosphites successfully worked as chiral ligands in Rh-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate additions, realizing acceptable yields with excellent enantioselectivity, and were used to synthesize a pharmacologically important molecule.

Synthetic Approach toward Enantiopure Cyclic Sulfinamides

A synthetic approach toward densely substituted enantiopure cyclic sulfinamides possessing up to four consecutive stereogenic centers was developed based on a completely diastereoselective S_N2′ cyclization/tert-Bu cleavage sequence. Diastereospecific transformation of the obtained scaffold into chiral S^VI derivatives such as sulfoximines and sulfonimidamides is demonstrated.

Iron-Catalyzed Conjugate Addition of Aryl Iodides onto Activated Alkenes under Air in Water

The combination of commercially available FeCl3·6H2O with a water-soluble cationic 2,2′-bipyridyl catalytic system was found to enable the direct conjugate addition of aryl iodides onto activated alkenes, such as an α,β-unsaturated ester and a ketone, in a weakly acidic aqueous solution. This operationally simple protocol was carried out at 80 °C under air atmosphere in a potassium acetate-buffered aqueous solution for 12 h in the presence of Zn dust as a reductant to provide the desired 1,4-adducts in good yields.
