Copper-Catalyzed Asymmetric Reduction of β,β-Disubstituted Alkenylboramides

Visible-Light-Driven Decarboxylative Borylation: Rapid Access to α- and β-Amino-boronamides

In this study, we described a two-step process involving an efficient visible-light-induced decarboxylative borylation of α- and β-amino redox-active esters with bis(catecholato)diboron, followed by transamination with 1,8-diaminonapthalene (DANH2). A series of boronamides were obtained in moderate to excellent yields in this one-pot procedure. The photochemical process proved to be very efficient even when conducted under flow conditions with shorter reaction durations and scalable synthesis of DAN boronates.

Copper-Catalyzed Borylation of Styrenes by 1,8-Diaminonaphthalene-Protected Diboronic Acid

We report a concise synthesis of 1,8-diaminonaphthalene-protected diboronic acid (B₂(dan)₂), which is a promising borylating agent. B₂(dan)₂ is a bench-stable compound, and it could be utilized for Cu-catalyzed borylation of styrene derivatives. The reaction proceeded in a highly selective manner, and the products were isolated in up to 97% yields. Mechanistic studies revealed that a borate species would be a key intermediate for the borylation reaction.

Enantioselective Cu-catalyzed double hydroboration of alkynes to access chiral gem-diborylalkanes

Chiral organoborons are of great value in asymmetric synthesis, functional materials, and medicinal chemistry. The development of chiral bis(boryl) alkanes, especially optically enriched 1,1-diboron compounds, has been greatly inhibited by the lack of direct synthetic protocols. Therefore, it is very challenging to develop a simple and effective strategy to obtain chiral 1,1-diborylalkanes. Herein, we develop an enantioselective copper-catalyzed cascade double hydroboration of terminal alkynes and highly enantioenriched gem-diborylalkanes were readily obtained. Our strategy uses simple terminal alkynes and two different boranes to construct valuable chiral gem-bis(boryl) alkanes with one catalytic and one ligand pattern, which represents the simplest and most straightforward strategy for constructing such chiral gem-diborons.

Optically enriched 1,1-diboron compounds are significantly underdeveloped because of the paucity of the straightforward synthetic protocols. Herein, the authors report an enantioselective copper-catalyzed cascade double hydroboration of terminal alkynes to access highly enantioenriched gem-diborylalkanes.

(Z)-Selective Hydrosilylation and Hydroboration of Terminal Alkynes Enabled by Ruthenium Complexes with an N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand

Metal-catalyzed trans-1,2-hydrosilylations and hydroborations of terminal alkynes that generate synthetically valuable (Z)-alkenylsilanes and (Z)-alkenylboranes remain challenging due to the (E)-selective nature of the reactions and the formation of the thermodynamically unfavorable (Z)-isomer. The development of new, efficient catalytic systems for the (Z)-selective hydrosilylation and hydroboration of terminal alkynes is thus highly desirable from a fundamental perspective as it would deepen our understanding of the metal-catalyzed (Z)-selective hydrosilylation and hydroboration of terminal alkynes. This personal account describes our research for developing a ruthenium complex that can efficiently catalyze the hydrosilylation and hydroboration of terminal alkynes, and for exploring the factors controlling (Z)-selectivity of the reactions. Our effort into the activation of B-protected boronic acids, R-B(dan) (dan=naphthalene-1,8-diaminato), that was believed not to participate in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, is also discussed.

Copper-Catalyzed Asymmetric Borylacylation of Styrene and Indene Derivatives

The enantioselective copper-catalyzed borylacylation of aryl olefins with acyl chlorides and bis-(pinacolato)diboron is reported. This three-component reaction involves an enantioselective syn-borylcupration of the aryl olefin, followed by a nucleophilic attack on the acyl chloride. This reaction proceeds with a 2 mol % catalyst loading and is generally completed within 30 min at room temperature. Because the boron moiety can be converted into versatile functional groups and the carbonyl group is a ubiquitous functional group, the resulting chiral β-borylated ketones are versatile intermediates in organic synthesis.

Theoretical Characterization of Catalytically Active Species in Reductive Hydroxymethylation of Styrene with CO2 over a Bisphosphine-Ligated Copper Complex

In this work, a density functional theory (DFT) study was performed to identify the catalytically active species in the copper-catalyzed three-component reductive hydroxymethylation of styrene with CO₂ and hydrosilane. The calculations reveal that the dimeric copper(I) hydride species, formed in a mixture of the bisphosphine ligand, Cu(OAc)₂, and hydrosilane, probably acts as the catalyst precursor. In the beginning, this species is catalytically competent to trigger the hydrocupration of styrene, along with the formation of the dimeric copper(I) alkyl intermediate. Subsequently, CO₂ insertion into the dimeric copper(I) alkyl intermediate occurs, which is accompanied by the cleavage of the Cu-Cu bond and the generation of the monomeric copper(I) carboxylate intermediate. In the end, the sequential reduction of the monomeric copper(I) carboxylate intermediate with the hydrosilane produces the monomeric copper(I) hydride species as the actual catalyst and turns on the catalytic cycle. On the other hand, the monomeric copper(II) hydride species, yielded as the kinetic product in the initial reaction of the bisphosphine ligand, Cu(OAc)₂, and hydrosilane, is also reactive for the hydrocupration of styrene. However, the resulting monomeric copper(II) alkyl intermediate is found to be the catalyst resting state, because of the much higher energy barrier demanded for the subsequent nucleophilic attack toward CO₂. On the basis of the results of an activation-strain model (ASM) analysis and charge decomposition analysis (CDA), the low activity of the monomeric copper(II) alkyl intermediate can be ascribed to the more crowded environment around the central copper(II) ion and the weaker nucleophilicity of the alkyl moiety. Furthermore, all of the possible CuH species generated in the system are competent to promote the two-component hydrosilylation of CO₂ with hydrosilane, which is an inevitable side reaction along with the reductive hydroxymethylation of styrene with CO₂ and hydrosilane.
