Tuning of Surface Characteristics of Anodes for Efficient and Sustained Power Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells

Titanium mesh as the anode of electrochemically active biofilm sensor for improved sensitivity in water toxicity real-time early-warning

As serious water ecological pollution caused by toxicant leakage occurs frequently, early-warning for toxicity presented in water environment attracts increasing attentions as it saves time to retain water safety and human health. Electrochemically active biofilm (EAB) sensor is a promising device for in situ real-time water toxicity early-warning. To improve the sensitivity of EAB sensor particularly for low-concentration toxicity warning, this study employed titanium mesh (TiM) as the anode to construct an EAB sensor. Compared to traditional EAB sensor with carbon felt (CF) anode, the sensitivity of the TiM sensor was increased up to 37.4 times. The effects of mesh size (TiM50, TiM100, TiM150) and operation mode (flow-by and flow-through) on the sensitivity of TiM sensors were further investigated. Results showed the sensor with TiM100 anode had the highest inhibition rate (IR) in flow-by mode, attributed to low charge transfer resistance (Rct) and fast mass transfer. Flow-through operation could further enhance TiM100 sensor's sensitivity from flow-by operation and succeeded to signal as low as 0.0025% formaldehyde, the lowest so far tested in EAB sensor with sensing anode. Multiple toxicity shocks on flow-through TiM100 sensor revealed its good recoverability towards all tested formaldehyde concentration from 0.01% to 0.0025%, during which electrochemical activity degradation and biomass accumulation partially impaired the repeatability. This work highlights the great improvement of EAB sensors by utilizing titanium mesh as EAB carrier and provides a reference for the practical application of metallic materials for EAB sensors.

A Weak Electricigen-Based Bioelectrochemical Sensor for Real-Time Monitoring of Chemical Pollutants in Water

Electroactive microorganisms are now understood to be abundant across nature, though many are categorized as "weak electricigens" not suitable for reasonable power generation. We report the use of weak electricigens from the natural environment for rapid, real-time water quality monitoring. Using a variety of pesticides as model chemical pollutants, the bioelectrochemical sensor was responsive within minutes at all concentrations tested (0.05-2 ppm) and could be repreatedly used long-term. Due to the prevalence of electroactive microorganisms in the natural environment, such sensors could work in tandem with conventional monitoring methods and may be useful for detecting emerging contaminants.

Electricity-Driven Microbial Metabolism of Carbon and Nitrogen: A Waste-to-Resource Solution

Electricity-driven microbial metabolism relies on the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process between microbes and electrodes and provides promise for resource recovery from wastewater and industrial discharges. Over the past decades, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to designing electrocatalysts and microbes, as well as hybrid systems to push this approach toward industrial adoption. This paper summarizes these advances in order to facilitate a better understanding of electricity-driven microbial metabolism as a sustainable waste-to-resource solution. Quantitative comparisons of microbial electrosynthesis and abiotic electrosynthesis are made, and the strategy of electrocatalyst-assisted microbial electrosynthesis is critically discussed. Nitrogen recovery processes including microbial electrochemical N₂ fixation, electrocatalytic N₂ reduction, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), and abiotic electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia (Abio-NRA) are systematically reviewed. Furthermore, the synchronous metabolism of carbon and nitrogen using hybrid inorganic-biological systems is discussed, including advanced physicochemical, microbial, and electrochemical characterizations involved in this field. Finally, perspectives for future trends are presented. The paper provides valuable insights on the potential contribution of electricity-driven microbial valorization of waste carbon and nitrogen toward a green and sustainable society.

Enhancing extracellular electron transfer through selective enrichment of Geobacter with Fe@CN-modified carbon-based anode in microbial fuel cells

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been demonstrated as a renewable energy strategy to efficiently recover chemical energy stored in wastewater into clean electricity, yet the limited power density limits their practical application. Here, Fe-doped carbon and nitrogen (Fe@CN) nanoparticles were synthesized by a direct pyrolysis process, which was further decorated to fabricate Fe@CN carbon paper anode. The modified Fe@CN anode with a higher electrochemically active surface area was not only benefit for the adhesion of electrochemically active microorganisms (EAMs) and extracellular electron transfer (EET) between the anode and EAMs but also selectively enriched Geobacter, a typical EAMs species. Accordingly, the MFCs with Fe@CN anode successfully achieved a highest voltage output of 792.76 mV and a prolonged stable voltage output of 300 h based on the mixed culture feeding with acetate. Most importantly, the electroactive biofilms on Fe@CN anode achieved more content ratio of proteins to polysaccharides (1.40) in extracellular polymeric substances for the balance between EET and cell protection under a harsh environment. This work demonstrated the feasibility of development on anode catalysts for the elaboration of the catalytic principle about interface modification, which may contribute to the practical application of MFC in energy generation and wastewater treatment.

Electrochemical Energy Harvesting Using Microbial Active Matter

With the continuous growth in world population and economy, the global energy demand is increasing rapidly. Given that non-renewable energy sources will eventually deplete, there is increasing need for clean, alternative renewable energy sources, which will be inexpensive and involve minimum risk of environmental pollution. In this paper, harnessing the activity of cupric reductase NDH-2 enzyme present in Escherichia coli bacterial cells, we demonstrate a simple and efficient energy harvesting strategy within an electrochemical chamber without the requirement of any external fuels or force fields. The transduction of energy has been demonstrated with various strains of E. coli, indicating that this strategy could, in principle, be applicable for other microbial catalytic systems. We offer a simple mechanism of the energy transduction process considering the bacterial enzyme-mediated redox reaction occurring over the working electrode of the electrochemical cell. Also, the amount of energy generated has been found to be depending on the motility of bacteria within the experimental chamber, suggesting possible opportunities for developing microbial motility-controlled small scale power generators. Finally, we show that the Faradaic electrochemical energy harvested is large enough to power a commercial light emitting diode connected to an amplifier circuit. We expect the present study to generate sufficient interest within soft condensed matter and biophysics communities, and offer useful platforms for controlled energy generation at the small scales.

Heterogeneous Structure Regulated by Selection Pressure on Bacterial Adhesion Optimized the Viability Stratification Structure of Electroactive Biofilms

As the core of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), the components and structure of electroactive biofilms (EABs) are essential for MFC performance. Bacterial adhesion plays a vital role in shaping the structure of EABs, but the effect of bacterial adhesion under selection pressure on EABs has not been systematically studied. Here, the response of the composition, structure, and electrochemical performance of EABs to the selective adhesion pressure due to the selective coordination of Fe(III) and Co(II) with thiol and the different affinities for bacteria on hybrid electrodes (Fe₁Co, Fe₄Co, and Fe₁₀Co) were comprehensively investigated. Compared with carbon cloth (CC), the appropriate selective adhesion pressure of Fe₄Co activated the dead inner core of EABs and optimized their viability stratification structure. Both the total viability and the viability of the inner core layer in the Fe₄Co EAB (0.67, 0.70 ± 0.01) were higher than those of the CC (0.46, 0.54 ± 0.01), Fe₁Co (0.50, 0.48 ± 0.03), and Fe₁₀Co (0.51, 0.51 ± 0.03). Moreover, a higher proportion of proteins was detected in the Fe₄Co EAB, enhancing the redox activity of extracellular polymeric substances. Fe₄Co enriched Geobacter and stimulated microbial metabolism. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the Fe₄Co EAB was the most electroactive EAB, with a maximum power density of 2032.4 mW m^-2, which was 1.7, 1.3, and 1.1 times that of the CC (1202.6 mW m^-2), Fe₁Co (1610.3 mW m^-2), and Fe₁₀Co (1824.4 mW m^-2) EABs, respectively. Our findings confirmed that highly active EABs could be formed by imposing selection pressure on bacterial adhesion.

Tuning of Electrode Surface for Enhanced Bacterial Adhesion and Reactions: A Review on Recent Approaches

The study of bacterial adhesion and its consequences has great significance in different fields such as marine science, renewable energy sectors, soil and plant ecology, food industry, and the biomedical field. Generally, the adverse effects of microbial surface interactions have attained wide visibility. However, herein, we present distinct approaches to highlight the beneficial aspects of microbial surface interactions for various applications rather than deal with the conventional negative aspects or prevention strategies. The surface microbial reactions can be tuned for useful biochemical or bio-electrochemical applications, which are otherwise unattainable through conventional routes. In this context, the present review is a comprehensive approach to highlight the basic principles and signature parameters that are responsible for the useful microbial-electrode interactions. It also proposes various surface tuning strategies, which are useful for tuning the electrode characteristics particularly suitable for the enhanced bacterial adhesion and reactions. The tuning of surface characteristics of electrodes is discussed with a special reference to the Microbial Fuel Cell as an example.

Effect of Polypyrrole-Fe3O4 Composite Modified Anode and Its Electrodeposition Time on the Performance of Microbial Fuel Cells

Anode modification is a useful method to increase the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). By using the electrochemical deposition method, Fe3O4 and polypyrrole (PPy) were polymerized on a carbon felt anode to prepare Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes. In order to ascertain the effect of electrodeposition time on characteristics of the modified electrode, the preparation time of the modified electrode was adjusted. The modified anodes were used in MFCs, and their performances were evaluated by analyzing the electricity generation performance and sewage treatment capacity of MFCs. Experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes could enhance the power production capacity and sewage treatment efficiency of MFC effectively. In particular, when the deposition time was 50 min, the modified anode could significantly improve the MFC performance. In this case, the steady-state current density of MFC increased by 59.5% in comparison with that of the MFC with an unmodified carbon felt anode, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate was 95.3% higher than that of the unmodified anode. Therefore, the Fe3O4-PPy composite is an effective material for electrode modification, and a good anode modification effect can be obtained by selecting the appropriate electrodeposition time.
