Effects of flow-induced electromagnetic field and surface roughness on antifouling activity of phenolic compounds

Microbial fouling involves the physicochemical interactions between microorganisms and solid surfaces. An electromagnetic field (EMF) may change the diffusion rates of microbial cells and the electrical double layer around the cells and contacting surfaces. In the current study, polycardanol exhibiting antibiofouling activity was modified with ferromagnetic iron oxide (IO) to investigate the EMF effects on bacterial adhesion. When there was a flow of electrolyte that contained bacterial cells, flow-induced EMF was generated according to Faraday's principle. It was observed that the IO-ionic solution (IS)-modified surfaces, with an induced current of 44, 53, 66 nA, showed decreases in the adhesion of bacteria cells more than the unmodified (polycardanol) and IO-nanoparticles-modified ones. In addition to the EMF effects, the nano-scale uniform roughness of the modified surfaces appeared to play an important role in the reduction of cell adhesion. The results demonstrated that the IOIS-modified surface (3.2 × 10-6 mM IO) had the highest antibiofouling activity.

Impact of the physical properties of contact lens materials on the discomfort: role of the coefficient of friction

Contact Lens Discomfort (CLD) is the main cause in contact lens (CLs) discontinuation, referred in literature as drop-out phenomenon. Despite such evidence was reported in several clinical studies, a relationship between physico-chemical properties of CLs and CLD is not still totally understood. In this regard, the friction of CLs surfaces seems to be related to discomfort feeling events, probably due to an alteration of the lubricate function of the tear film after the CL placement inside the ocular environment. In the last years, many studies have been finalized to the friction measurements of CLs surface, finding conflicting data due to a lack in standardized protocol. The aim of this review is primarily to show evident relationships between CLs surface properties (i.e. wettability, tear evaporation, tear film quality, etc.) and the coefficient of friction (CoF), resulting therefore the most relevant physical quantity in the CLs characterization. In addition, we reported the most recent studies in CLs tribology, which highlight that the introduction of a standard protocol in CoF measurements is necessary to obtain reproducible results, considering the aim to evaluate in a more precise way the relationship between this material surface property and comfort in CLs users.

Environmentally stable and stretchable polymer electronics enabled by surface-tethered nanostructured molecular-level protection

Stretchable polymer semiconductors (PSCs) are essential for soft stretchable electronics. However, their environmental stability remains a longstanding concern. Here we report a surface-tethered stretchable molecular protecting layer to realize stretchable polymer electronics that are stable in direct contact with physiological fluids, containing water, ions and biofluids. This is achieved through the covalent functionalization of fluoroalkyl chains onto a stretchable PSC film surface to form densely packed nanostructures. The nanostructured fluorinated molecular protection layer (FMPL) improves the PSC operational stability over an extended period of 82 days and maintains its protection under mechanical deformation. We attribute the ability of FMPL to block water absorption and diffusion to its hydrophobicity and high fluorination surface density. The protection effect of the FMPL (~6 nm thickness) outperforms various micrometre-thick stretchable polymer encapsulants, leading to a stable PSC charge carrier mobility of ~1 cm2 V-1 s-1 in harsh environments such as in 85-90%-humidity air for 56 days or in water or artificial sweat for 42 days (as a benchmark, the unprotected PSC mobility degraded to 10-6 cm2 V-1 s-1 in the same period). The FMPL also improved the PSC stability against photo-oxidative degradation in air. Overall, we believe that our surface tethering of the nanostructured FMPL is a promising approach to achieve highly environmentally stable and stretchable polymer electronics.

Surface Passivation with a Perfluoroalkane Brush Improves the Precision of Single-Molecule Measurements

Single-molecule imaging is invaluable for investigating the heterogeneous behavior and interactions of biological molecules. However, an impediment to precise sampling of single molecules is the irreversible adsorption of components onto the surfaces of cover glasses. This causes continuous changes in the concentrations of different molecules dissolved or suspended in the aqueous phase from the moment a sample is dispensed, which will shift, over time, the position of chemical equilibria between monomeric and multimeric components. Interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT) is a technique in the single-molecule toolkit that has the capability to detect unlabeled proteins and protein complexes both as they adsorb onto and desorb from a glass surface. Here, we examine the reversible and irreversible interactions between a number of different proteins and glass via analysis of the adsorption and desorption of protein at the single-molecule level. Furthermore, we present a method for surface passivation that virtually eliminates irreversible adsorption while still ensuring the residence time of molecules on surfaces is sufficient for detection of adsorption by iSCAT. By grafting high-density perfluoroalkane brushes on cover-glass surfaces, we observe approximately equal numbers of adsorption and desorption events for proteins at the measurement surface (±1%). The fluorous-aqueous interface also prevents the kinetic trapping of protein complexes and assists in establishing a thermodynamic equilibrium between monomeric and multimeric components. This surface passivation approach is valuable for in vitro single-molecule experiments using iSCAT microscopy because it allows for continuous monitoring of adsorption and desorption of protein without either a decline in detection events or a change in sample composition due to the irreversible binding of protein to surfaces.

Recycling protein selective adsorption on fluorine-modified surface through fluorine-fluorine interaction

Low surface energy materials with micro-nano structures have been widely developed to prevent non-specific adhesion of biomolecules. Herein we put forward a new approach based on the antifouling and self-assembly properties of fluorine components, to construct a non-specific protein resistance surface with selective protein adsorption property. Briefly, the antifouling surface (SN-F) was obtained by a simple one-step modification on silicon nanowire arrays (SiNWAs) with fluorine coupling agent 1 H,1 H,2 H,2 H-perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (FAS). And protein was fluorinated by conjugation with an amphiphilic fluoro-copolymer, produced from 2-methacrylamido glucopyranose (MAG) and trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) via RAFT polymerization. The properties of the materials were characterized by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) etc., and protein adsorption was investigated by protein content measurement, fluorescence detection, and electrophoresis. It was observed that the adsorption for native proteins on SN-F was at an extremely low level, while the adsorption for the fluoro-copolymer conjugated protein (PFG-BSA) was significantly increased. When the percentage of TFEMA in the fluoro-copolymer was as high as 52.0%, the fluorinated protein adsorbed on SN-F was more than 35 times of native proteins on the surface. Moreover, the platform could resist IgG adhesion in serum after the adsorption of fluorinated protein, and it could be recycled three times after 75% ethanol treatment. In conclusion, SN-F showed non-specific protein resistance through low surface energy and specific protein adsorption by fluorine-fluorine self-assembly. The fluorinated nanostructured platform has a great potential in controlling protein adsorption and release.

Conjugated Molecule-Assisted Supramolecular Hydrogel with Enhanced Antibacterial and Antibiofouling Properties

The hydrogel using natural and synthetic polymers to create a cross-linking network has drawn attention in diverse bioapplications. However, inhibition of bacterial infection is still a challenge for hydrogel's wide application. In this work, we reported a supramolecular hydrogel with a good antibacterial property built from conjugated molecules. The water-soluble molecular 4,7-bis[9,9-di(2-carboxy-ethyl)-fluoren-2-yl]-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (OFBTCOOH) physically linked with monomers via hydrophobic interaction. The free-radical polymerized poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) was hydrogen-bond cross-linked by dual amides in the side chains to form a hydrogel. An adjustable micro-network was obtained by increasing OFBTCOOH with evidence of enhanced intermolecular interaction. The successfully integrated OFBTCOOH could be excited upon light irradiation. The energy of triplet-state excitons of OFBTCOOH transferred to the ground-state oxygen to produce singlet oxygen, which endowed the hydrogel with the antibacterial property. Meanwhile, the superhydrophilic surface of the hydrogel can bind water molecules to form a stable hydration layer, which acted as barriers to resist protein and bacterial adsorption and achieve the anti-biofouling goal. The ease in introducing conjugated polyelectrolytes may provide a formulation to functionalize hydrogels via various physical interactions.

RAFT Polymerization of Semifluorinated Monomers Mediated by a NIR Fluorinated Photocatalyst

Near-infrared (NIR) light plays an increasingly important role in the field of photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization due to its unique properties. Yet, the NIR photocatalyst with good stability for PET-RAFT polymerization remains promising. Here, a strategy of NIR PET-RAFT polymerization of semifluorinated monomers using fluorophenyl bacteriochlorin as a photocatalyst with strong absorption at the NIR light region (710-780 nm) is reported. In which, the F atoms are used to modify reduced tetraphenylporphyrin structure with enhanced photostability of photocatalyst. Under the irradiation of NIR light (λ_max = 740 nm), the PET-RAFT polymerization of semifluorinated methylacrylic monomers presents living/control characteristics and temporal modulation. By the PET-RAFT polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) strategy, stable fluorine-containing micelles are constructed in various solvents. In addition, the fluorinated hydrophobic surface is fabricated via a surface-initiated PET-RAFT (SI-PET-RAFT) polymerization using silicon wafer bearing RAFT agents with tunable surface hydrophobicity. This strategy not only enlightens the application of further modified compounds based on porphyrin structure in photopolymerization, but also shows promising potential for the construction of well-defined functional fluoropolymers.

Fluorinated Carbon Nanotube Superamphiphobic Coating for High-Efficiency and Long-Lasting Underwater Antibiofouling Surfaces

Biofilm formation on the surface of materials has brought great troubles to various industries. Designing surfaces with long-lasting antibiofouling properties can help restrain primary bacterial and protein attachment and subsequent biofilm formation for a long time, which is also of great significance for industrial applications. In this work, we successfully prepared fluorinated carbon nanotubes through a one-step fluorination method using fluorosilane and fabricated a superamphiphobic coating using a simple spray method. This coating with ultralow surface free energy and stable micro/nano structures achieved highly efficient and long-term underwater antibiofouling properties. Tea, milk, BSA, and bacterial solution can bounce highly on this surface without wetting the surface in air. The long-term existence of the underwater air-bubble layer on the surface of the superamphiphobic coating was observed. Thus, this surface can effectively resist BSA and bacterial attachment (E. coli), and the efficiency, respectively, reaches 97.5 and 98.2%. Even if it is fully soaked in BSA and BS solution for 120 h, the whole surface is still able to repel water, BSA, and BS solution very well. In addition, the coating possessed excellent wear resistance, the CAs of BSA and BS solution just decreased slightly (higher than 158°), and the sliding angles increased slightly (lower than 4°) after 50 tape abrasion cycles. Therefore, this superamphiphobic coating may have promising applications for marine devices, biomedical materials, protective clothing, and chemical shielding.
