Preparation and applications of chitosan and cellulose composite materials

Chitosan is a natural fiber, chemically cellulose-like biopolymer, which is processed from chitin. Its use as a natural polymer is getting more attention because it is non-toxic, renewable, and biocompatible. However, its poor mechanical and thermal strength, particle size, and surface area restrict its industrial use. Consequently, to improve these properties, cellulose and/or inorganic nanoparticles have been used. This review discusses the recent progress of chitosan and cellulose composite materials, their preparation, and their applications in different industrial sectors. It also discusses the modification of chitosan and cellulose composite materials to allow their use on a large scale. Finally, the recent development of chitosan composite materials for drug delivery, food packaging, protective coatings, and wastewater treatment are discussed. The challenges and perspectives for future research are also considered. This review suggests that chitosan and cellulose nano-composite are promising, low-cost products for environmental remediation involving a simple production process.

The personalized application of biomaterials based on age and sexuality specific immune responses

Although biomaterials are widely utilized in clinics, it still follows the "one-fits-all" strategy. Biological variables such as age and sexuality have an impact on the host immune response and are not fully considered in the practice guidelines of the biomaterial implantation. In this study, we investigated the immuno-material interactions of six commonly used biomaterials (agarose, alginate, chitosan, CMC, GelMA and collagen type I) and constructed a population (with different ages and sexes) based transcriptome atlas. Protein and polysaccharide-based biomaterials elicited distinctive immune responses that protein-based materials preferred the NKT pathway to activate innate and adaptive immune response, whereas polysaccharide-based materials activated the cDCs to present antigen. The atlas further revealed the sex/age-related variabilities on the immune response followed by the polysaccharide treatment. As for sex bias, alginate and agarose stimulation significantly increased the proportion of naive CD4⁺ T cells in the female group, accompanied by the Th1 differentiation tendency, compared to the male group. Age-biased transcript showed alginate and chitosan would impair the extracellular matrix remodeling and up-regulate the apoptosis process in the elderly groups, compared to the young group. More attentions on the ingredient, age and sexuality effect of biomaterial implants should be paid during the clinical practice, especially for the polysaccharide-based materials. This experimental result is of great significance for the selection of biomaterials, particularly the blood contact materials, such as vessel or cardiac device, drug vehicles and hemostatic materials.

Polysaccharide-based nanomedicines for cancer immunotherapy: A review

Cancer immunotherapy is an effective antitumor approach through activating immune systems to eradicate tumors by immunotherapeutics. However, direct administration of "naked" immunotherapeutic agents (such as nucleic acids, cytokines, adjuvants or antigens without delivery vehicles) often results in: (1) an unsatisfactory efficacy due to suboptimal pharmacokinetics; (2) strong toxic and side effects due to low targeting (or off-target) efficiency. To overcome these shortcomings, a series of polysaccharide-based nanoparticles have been developed to carry immunotherapeutics to enhance antitumor immune responses with reduced toxicity and side effects. Polysaccharides are a family of natural polymers that hold unique physicochemical and biological properties, as they could interact with immune system to stimulate an enhanced immune response. Their structures offer versatility in synthesizing multifunctional nanocomposites, which could be chemically modified to achieve high stability and bioavailability for delivering therapeutics into tumor tissues. This review aims to highlight recent advances in polysaccharide-based nanomedicines for cancer immunotherapy and propose new perspectives on the use of polysaccharide-based immunotherapeutics.

Recent updates in the polysaccharides-based Nano-biocarriers for drugs delivery and its application in diseases treatment: A review

With people's increasing awareness of diseases treatment, the researchers began to focus on drug delivery to the exact site of action at the optimal rate. Some researchers have proved that many nanostructures loaded with drugs are significantly better than conventional nanostructures. However, the materials from which the nanostructure determines its performance. To use it as a pharmaceutical ingredient, it must meet strict safety regulatory standards worldwide. Therefore, people's attention has paid to easily available natural substances. As far as we know, bioactive polysaccharides are excellent candidates for realizing these purposes. To be precise, due to the natural availability of polysaccharides, it has been widely used in the research of Nano-biocarriers loaded with drugs. Based on the above analysis, the nanomaterials developed through the laboratory have great potential for upgrading to market products. Therefore, it is of great significance to review the latest progress of polysaccharide-based Nano-biocarriers in drug delivery and their application in diseases treatment. In this work, we focused on the preparation of polysaccharides-based Nano-biocarriers, commonly used polysaccharides for preparing Nano-biocarriers, and drugs loaded on polysaccharides-based Nano-biocarriers to treat diseases. Shortly, polysaccharide-based Nano-biocarriers will be increasingly used in drug delivery and treatment of diseases.
